aFLrulesAustralian Rules football is a really simple game to follow. Players score points by kicking a goal (worth six points) or a behind (worth one point) at either end of the field. Each team has 18 players on the field, with four extras on the bench for interchange. The game is split into four quarters of 20 minutes each, plus extra time at the end for any time lost through delays in play. All up, with quarter-time, half-time and three-quarter-time breaks, you can expect a game of AFL to go for around 2½ hours. There is no offside in Australian Rules football – although players are usually divided up into forwards, defenders and midfielders, anyone can go anywhere on the field. Players pass the ball to each other by kicking or handballing – no throwing is allowed.

aFLLingoBEHIND – When a player kicks the ball through the outer posts or into one of the goal posts and is awarded one point.

GOAL – A goal is awarded when a kick travels untouched between the two tallest goal posts. It earns the maximum score of six points.

HANDBALLING – This is the AFL equivalent of passing the ball, and involves holding the ball stationary in one hand and punching it with the closed fist of the other hand. An incorrect handball will result in a free kick to the other team.

kICk – The most effective way to gain distance and the only way to score a goal.

MARk – Awarded when a player catches a ball from a kick travelling at least 15 metres without being touched. Being awarded a mark means that the player can dispose of the ball without the opposition trying to tackle them or take the ball away.

BALL – Commonly yelled out when a player holds on to the ball too long whilst being tackled by the opposition.

HIT OuT – Like a tip-off in basketball, the Ruckmen try to give their team possession of the ball by hitting it down to their running players. Hit outs occur at centre bounces at the beginning of each quarter and after goals are scored, as well as at throw-ins when the ball goes out of bounds.
