CLARK honors top forklift dealers with Dealer of Excellence awards

CLARK Material Handling Company recently announced the 2016 recipients of its prestigious “Dealer of Excellence” awards. Each year, CLARK selects its top dealers who excel in new equipment and aftermarket parts sales, service achievement, general customer satisfaction and overall dealership operations, and awards them with CLARK’s highest honors. The awardees were hosted at a special event held at CLARK’s North American headquarters in Lexington, Kentucky on February 10-12, 2016.

President and C.E.O., Dennis Lawrence, commented on the importance of the awards recognition as to not only demonstrate the company’s appreciation for a job well done, but also as a validation of the strong viability of CLARK’s product in the marketplace and the continued surge of the CLARK brand in North America.

CLARK’s 2016 Dealer of the Year is Valley Industrial Trucks, Inc. Celebrating their 60th year as a CLARK dealer, Valley is a two-time winner of this distinguished award. At their recent anniversary celebration, held in Youngstown, Ohio, the award was presented to Valley’s employees. Mr. Jim Hammond, President, commented, “Valley Industrial Trucks and CLARK share a common growth strat-egy. Our businesses have been aligned since our inception 60 years ago and our futures remain strong together.” Buffalo Lift Trucks, Inc. was recognized as CLARK’s 2016 New Dealer of the Year, an award presented to Paul Notaro, Sales Department Manager, at the

ceremony in Lexington. In business for more than 30 years, Buffalo Lift Trucks became a CLARK dealer in November, 2014. “We are off to a great start with CLARK and are excited to have this opportunity and partnership,” said Mr. Notaro.

Become the Exception

Nine reasons why most salespeople are not successful at prospectingMike Marchev

One of my most often reminders requoted by those attending my live training sessions is: “There are only two types of people you will ever encounter. Those who you can help and the other kind.”

No truer words have ever been spoken.I plan to touch on nine reasons why most salespeople are not more

successful at arriving at deciding the candidates for each category.

1. Having too many prospects in your pipeline. Ultimately, it’s the quality of your prospects that are going to deliv-

er you your quota. Don’t get caught up with “numbers,” and “likes.” Work on fine-tuning a systematic approach to discern if a candidate actually fits your description of a profitable future customer. Get more particular with who you want to do business with.

2. Not having the time to follow up and follow through. Without a doubt this is the biggest problem most sales profession-

als face regardless of tier industry. Selling relationships take time to develop today; there is no excuse for not keeping in touch with your prospects and continually seeking opportunities to bring more value into the equation.

3. Not segmenting your prospects based on who they are and their needs.

This too is big. Treating everybody the same is a recipe for disaster. This takes time, effort and discipline. Learn to categorize your pros-pects based on their wants, needs, personality and idiosyncrasies.

4. Relying on email as your primary tool to prospect. Email is efficient, but it’s also seductive in having you think you’re

reaching your prospect. Selling has always been considered a contact sport. Yes, there is room for digital communication, but don’t ever discount the importance of face-to-face contact.

5. Thinking social media is your answer. Social media is in no way, shape or form today’s flavor of the

month marketing strategy. It is “real” and it is here to stay. My warn-ing is not to solely rely on this strategy in hope that it will lead you to the Promised Land. It won’t. It is merely another cog in the wheel to help you let others know that you are alive and that you may have something of value to offer.

6. Not allocating the proper commitment of your time. Thinking about prospecting is not prospecting! Prospecting hap-

pens when you engage! Too many agents allow the day to unfold on its own. In truth, this is what happens more often than not, but it still is a good idea to allocate specific hours of the day or week to seek new opportunities in the form of prospects.

7. Failing to realize your prospects don’t care about you. I must say this again and I will even put it in capital letters.

PROSPECTS DON’T CARE ABOUT YOU. Quit sending mes-sages that wax eloquently about who you are and how great your company is. Focus on ways you can help your prospects achieve their goals and objectives. Show them how you can take the pain away. Get out of you and into them.

8. Not making your messages about what the prospects need.I don’t know if the better word here is “want.” Need vs want.

Which is more powerful? It might very well be “want.” In either case, this spells research. Find out what they want/need by asking them, and follow up by giving it to them.

9. Thinking that prospecting is a waste of time. This thought process seeps in when your efforts do not pay imme-

diate dividends. We all are living in a world where we seek immediate gratification. We want things now. We expect things now. We be-come unhappy when we don’t get them now. The truth is that not all prospects will become paying customers, nor should they. Your job is to find, isolate, cultivate and reinforce relationships with a handful of people who will be grateful that they are contributing to you and your family’s eating habits. This will take time.

Handling Specialty’s small business attitude drives successWith a combined history of literally hundred’s of years of design

experience in engineering, manufacturing and selling into multiple in-dustries, Handling Specialty has become the premiere source of custom material handling solutions. But it wasn’t always this way.

Th e company, established in 1963 and working primarily within the automotive industry, grew considerably through the 90’s when they went from commodity to specialty manufacturing. Educated by the auto industry, Handling Specialty created a dynamic parts and services department featuring 24-hour service, a project management group, and dedicated quality assurance staff to support their existing client base and expanding markets.

In 2002, Handling Specialty decided that diversifi cation would better serve the company moving forward, and re-imagined a business plan that was 90% automotive to just 20% over the next decade. By 2013, the year Handling Specialty turned 50, they could look back on their choice to diversify fondly.

“A company doesn’t make it fi fty years without reinventing itself from time to time, and being fl exible to the needs of the customer, realizing a more diverse set of goals.” Explains Tom Beach, President of Handling Specialty.

With two dynamic manufacturing facilities, one with a seventy foot high bay for vertical builds, Handling Specialty’s capabilities to design and build for virtually any industry is only limited by their client’s imaginations. Th e engineering department designs each product with safety, effi ciency and ergonomics in mind to ensure satisfaction and return business.

Today, Handling Specialty works in the rail, transportation, energy, entertainment, aerospace, defense, advanced manufacturing and automotive industries. Th e majority of the work coming out of their manufacturing plants is custom engineered for specifi c applications. Quality, stability, personality and a small business attitude, is still how Handling Specialty governs their operations; allowing for that personal touch, which is still a favorite quality among the world’s largest business leaders.

Handling Specialty off ers conceptual engineering, consultation, de-sign, manufacturing, testing, installation, commissioning and training as well as on-going planned maintenance services for multiple industries all over the globe. Word of mouth, repeat business, marketing and sales eff orts all contribute to the company’s bottom line, and a bright future.www.handling.com

Hy-Tek Material Handling acquires two companiesHy-Tek Material Handling, Inc. announces the acquisition of

Gems Conveyor Installation, Inc. (GEMS) and Applied Handling Equipment Co. (AHECO). The acquisitions are expected to boost Hy-Tek’s 2016 sales to approximately $125 million. Columbus, Ohio-based Hy-Tek is the premier single-source provider of material handling solutions for industries including manufacturing, distribu-tion, retail, pharmaceutical, food, electronics and automotive. The acquisitions were announced by Hy-Tek CEO Sam Grooms.

A leading installer of welded construction conveyors, GEMS serves the biggest names in the parcel handling industry, including FedEx Ground, UPS and Amazon. GEMS also provides conveyer system installation services to distribution centers serving diverse industries nationwide. With offices in Greater Cincinnati, GEMS is overseen by principals Scott Meiman and Don McDonald, reporting to Hy-Tek Integrated Systems (IS) President Tom Mann.

“The GEMS acquisition opens a new market with tremendous opportunity for Hy-Tek,” said Mann. “The welded construction con-veyor business is a specialized niche with significant growth potential. Welded conveyor frames are designed to absorb the enormous beat-ing the parcel handling industry requires. Couple GEMS’ welded construction expertise with Hy-Tek’s support, and the potential for growth is huge,” Mann said.

“GEMS has enjoyed a successful subcontractor relationship with Hy-Tek IS since opening our doors for business in 2001,” said Mei-man. “We’re delighted now to become part of the Hy-Tek family.”

Dayton, Ohio-based AHECO is known for its expertise in provid-ing products and services for ergonomic material handling. Renamed the Applied Division of Hy-Tek Material Handling and overseen by principal Tim Colston, it serves the automotive, aerospace, food equipment, and general manufacturing industries. Notable clients include Honda of America Manufacturing, UTC Aerospace Systems, and Whirlpool Corp.

“We’re thrilled to join Hy-Tek Material Handling,” said Colston. “Our ergonomic storage and handling expertise, coupled with Hy-Tek’s resources and reach, create an unbeatable one-two punch.”

Having designed and delivered innovative material handling solutions for 53 years, Hy-Tek has a history of growth through strategic acquisitions. “GEMS gives Hy-Tek Integrated Systems the opportunity to become a leading installer of welded construction conveyor systems for the parcel handling industry. The Applied Divi-sion of Hy-Tek Material Handling broadens our ergonomic product offerings. We look forward to delivering sales, service, and support to growing numbers of manufacturers and distributors in the U.S. and abroad,” said Grooms.www.hy-tek.net

Creamer's CornerWhat’s the fuss Gus?Mike Creamer

Bristles are very unique with every brush made for a sweeper. These are made with different materials because of the different applications or environments. There are polyurethane aka: poly, nylon, prolene, proex, union and wire which is made from, well wire of course.

With this being said, there are also combination brooms which means that the materials are combined on one broom core. Some examples would be union/wire, proex/wire and poly/wire.

#1. Polyurethane (poly). It is a plastic material suited for aggres-sive sweeping. There is an optional poly made for certain sweeper manufacturers called stiff poly, which when made is produced with a larger outside diameter. When combined with a wire, this broom can be a formidable sweeping broom for severe environments such as a steel mill. However, you would be concerned with temperature because poly is not suited for high heat.

#2. Proex. That’s where the material proex comes into play. Proex is a poly derivative, however specifically produced to withstand a high heat environment. So now let’s combine this with wire and “WA LA”, a proex/wire which is a very good broom, in, for exam-ple, a foundry. This highly dusty arena producing high heaty is this brooms bread and butter.

#3.Nylon. This material is a very high wearing material. It is con-sidered, by many, as a very good general purpose broom that can be used for all types of light soil/debris. Again, high wearing ma-terial so uneven floor/surfaces do not prematurely cause excessive wear. Nylon has a high heat temperature deflection, is chemical resistant and will absorb water in a wet condition. This material provides a truly general broom used by some manufacturers as their standard broom.

#4. Union. This is considered a natural material and is also known as natural fiber. When combined with wire fil material it is called fiber/wire or union/wire. It is a good al-around broom. For those of you that remember your mother’s corn broom, this is almost a facsimile of that material. When a broom is made using the 24 S.R. (single row) design, it becomes extremely good in high dust envi-ronments. This broom is also very good in high heat applications. So now it comes to the design of the broom. You’ll also notice I

use the term “broom” not “brush.” That is because we are discussing sweepers. Remember this: brooms sweep and brushes scrub. That will be a later topic to discuss. Now, we are discussing design. The choice of designs make up to configure bristle rows. Hence the designs would be:

#1) 8 D.R: Eight double row

#2) 12 D.R.: 12 double row

#3) 24 S.R.: 24 single row

#4) Patrol: Usually a patrol broom, also known as five double row, is typically used outdoors, such as parking lots.

#5) Herringbone: This is a “V” arrangement of the row design on the broom. One sweeping manufacturer, PowerBoss, uses this design whole heartily. The first four designs are known as a spiral wrap broom, which means what it implies. The rows spiral around the broom tube. Most brooms are made in this fashion.

So when I received an e-mail asking for a new broom, I was immediately advised the old one just didn’t do the proper job. After discussing this matter with (we will name him Gus to protect the innocent), I think we could have an answer.

After it was determined that Gus had a Tennant Sweeper Model 6550, the application was then learned to be very heavy dust and sand/sand like debris. The complaint is that it is just NOT sweeping up everything, leaving some behind on the floor. He then has to make a second pass which is very time consuming. I learned that what was being used was a 8 D.R. Nylon saying to me: I don’t know what to buy. I explained his choices and recommended the 24 S.R. Union/Wire combination and then asked him. What’s the fuss Gus? Use this broom and have no worries.

A week later he e-mailed saying “sweeps great!” Thanks Mike. This concludes today’s article and I appreciate you reading. I hope it has been a good read for you.

Creamer's Corner is a monthly conversation with Hi-Gear's Mike Creamer giving you advise, technical assistance, brand comparisons and on the job stories on repairing, maintaining or replacing your sweeper/scrubber. Industry NewsMHI announces Raymond Handling Concepts’s Luis Castaneda as the 2016 Face of the Supply Chain

Luis Castaneda, Key Account Manager for the Oregon market at Raymond Handling Concepts Corporation (RHCC), a leading ma-terials handling equipment supplier in Northern California, Nevada and the Pacific Northwest, was announced as the 2016 Face of the Supply Chain and the winner of MHI’s #iWorkInTheSupplyChain contest during the MODEX 2016 Industry Night.

Luis was born in Mexico and moved to Yakima, WA when he was only seven years old. He began his career managing a local auto parts center in Yakima, Washington, where he made such an impression while helping a tech who worked for Raymond Handling Con-cepts Corporation that he was invited to apply as soon as a position became available. He started with Raymond Handling Concepts Corporation in Eastern Washington as a Parts Sales Representative in January 2010 and moved into Account Manager position in 2012. Right away, he became thoroughly involved in the supply chain and enjoys every aspect of it.

“Growing up, I didn’t think that my future had much potential,” says Luis Castaneda. “The supply chain has given me a future full of potential. I work for a company that truly believes that ‘It’s not just business. It’s personal.’ Two years running I have achieved high sales numbers granting me to be a ‘Sales Lyon’ for RHCC. Every year that I achieve ‘Sales Lyon’ status I am able to give 1% of my booked GP to a charitable organization of my choice.”

Last year, Raymond Handling Concepts Corporation donated over $5,000 to the mission field in Zamora, Mexico. This mission field is one that Luis personally lead by taking a team of missionaries to help the local church in Zamora provide food for the poor, a safe place for recovering victims of drugs and alcohol and a place to help aban-doned elderly people.

“The team at Raymond Handling Concepts has been honored to work alongside Luis for the past six years, and each one of us has wit-nessed his extraordinary work ethic and humble character,” said Steve Raymond, President of Raymond Handling Concepts Corporation. “Luis truly deserves the title of the Face of the Supply Chain as I believe I can speak for our entire team here when I say we all admire him for the direction he has taken his career and hold a great amount of respect for him for all that he has contributed to the community in Zamora, Mexico.”

To the young adults graduating from high school and college, Luis gives this advice: “I would encourage you to seriously consider the supply chain as a career. The potential is unlimited, the people you will meet are amazing and the impact you will have on this world is incredible.”www.raymondhandling.com

Safety Corner

Don’t be a hypocrite!Brian Colburn of Forklift Training Systems

Everybody knows someone that says one thing and then does another. How many of us tell our kids to do certain things in order to be safe, and then show them quite another side when we don’t think they are watching! I know that telling my young son to wear his seatbelt or motorcycle helmet is almost worthless without me buckling up or putting on my helmet as an example to him.

How many times does a forklift trainer tell his operators to wear their seatbelts and then they see him leaving the parking lot not wearing his seat belt in the car? How many times does a dealership lecture a customer about safe forklift operations and then allow their own uncertified forklift mechanics to enter the customer’s facility not wearing belts or fall protection? When was the last time you took the time to see what was really happening at your site with regard to forklift safety? I see a lot of nice lobbies with pretty safety awards and commitments about safety from the President, CEO, etc. but what value does that hold if beyond the front office every-thing falls apart? Most of the accidents I have seen did not involve a lack of knowledge, they involved a lack of commitment on the part of a company to enforce their published safety rules. If you knew you could drive well above the posted speed limit and never be ticketed, would you continue to obey the law?

In the US there are approximately 85 forklift related deaths, which is more than tornados or hurricanes kill in average years. There are approximately 96,000 injures each year related to fork-lifts, which is enough people to fill a major sports stadium! If we want to really attack this problem, we need to stop putting band aides on the problems and deal with the root issues.

1) Take a look at your location and determine its present level of forklift safety.

2) Develop rules and regulations that are brief and reasonable.3) Enforce these rules without exception.4) Watch your incidents drop dramatically.

LEGACY Supply Chain Services unveils "Vets to WERC"LEGACY Supply Chain Services has signed on at the Champion

Sponsor level of the Warehousing Education and Research Coun-cil’s (WERC) 39th Annual Conference for Logistics Professionals. At this year’s WERC Conference, LEGACY will be unveiling a new program—"Vets to WERC"- that promotes hiring veterans into the supply chain industry. The Conference will be held in Providence, Rhode Island at the Rhode Island Convention Center on May 15-18, 2016 and includes three days packed with educational sessions. The annual event routinely draws nearly 1,100 senior-level warehousing, logistics and supply chain professionals.

LEGACY, a top-ranked, full-service third party logistics (3PL) pro-vider that manages more than 6 million square feet of warehouse space in 50 locations throughout the United States and Canada, has been involved with WERC since 2000. The company regularly sponsors the WERC Conference, as well as has key members of its leadership team serve on the WERC Board of Directors (currently LEGACY Senior Vice President Andy Dishner is a WERC Director at Large).

"LEGACY has long been a supporter of the WERC Conference due to the recognized thought leadership value WERC brings to the supply chain industry," explains Kyle Krug, LEGACY’s Director of Marketing Communications.

During the WERC Conference sessions, subject matter experts share industry-specific ideas for actionable strategies to improve processes and operations in a variety of topic areas—metrics,

outsourcing, people, transportation, reverse logistics, real estate and more—in industries such as retail, healthcare / pharmaceutical and manufacturing. The Conference also includes off-site facility tours, intimate and relaxed networking, and a Solutions Center featuring the latest innovative products and solutions.

"This year, we saw an opportunity to create a program with WERC that focuses greater attention to the value that military veterans can bring to companies in the warehousing, logistics and supply chain fields," Krug continues. "LEGACY is honored to be the founding sponsor of the Vets to WERC program, along with our program part-ners DC Velocity and the WERC organization. The Vets to WERC program will create awareness of the natural alignment between returning military veterans with supply chain and logistics experience and the need for talented professionals in the supply chain industry."

Registration can be accessed at www.werc.org/2016. Non-members of WERC are also welcomed to the event.

Persons needing assistance in convincing their managers to agree to Conference participation can access a complete package of Budget and Planning Tools that provide supporting documentation about the benefits of attendance. Included are a personal request letter and worksheet, an overview of confirmed topics and session titles, a list of the companies that send attendees to Conference, and an estimate of travel and registration costs.www.werc.org

Hands-Only CPR – Take it to heartHeart disease is the number one killer of men and women and as

many as 400,000 people will suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest this year. When this happens, quick intervention by a family mem-ber, co-worker or bystander can significantly increase the victim’s chances of survival.

Sudden cardiac arrest symptoms are immediate and drastic and include:

• Sudden collapse• No pulse• No breathing• Loss of consciousnessSometimes other signs and symptoms precede sudden cardiac

arrest. These may include fatigue, fainting, blackouts, dizziness, chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness, palpitations or vomiting. But sudden cardiac arrest often occurs with no warning.

Cardiac arrests are more common than you think and they can happen to anyone at any time. That is why it is so important to learn Hands-Only CPR. With 4 out of 5 cardiac arrests happening at home, the life you save is likely to be a spouse, parent, friend or child.

After someone has suffered from a cardiac arrest the first step is to call 911. After that, Hands-Only CPR is the most important thing you can do to keep the victim alive. Unfortunately only about 10 percent of Americans know CPR.

Hands-Only CPR (CPR with just chest compressions) is a tech-nique that has been proven to be as effective as CPR with breaths in treating adult cardiac arrest and has been recommended by the AHA for adults since 2008.

So why the move to Hands-Only CPR? Studies have shown that at the moment of cardiac arrest, there is an adequate amount of oxygen in the bloodstream and that breathing for someone isn’t necessary while you wait for emergency aid. Compressions and compressions only are the main focus of good CPR today. Plus Hands-Only CPR is easy to learn and administer and does not take certification.

Hands-Only CPR works by helping to maintain a steady flow of blood through the body until medical help can arrive. The purpose of the heart is to move blood around the body and supply our organs and tissues with needed nutrients. The pumping action of the heart creates an internal pressure through the vascular system. When some-one performs chest compressions they artificially create this pumping action. There is a minimum blood pressure that is needed in order to supply blood to the brain. Studies have shown that it takes about 10 chest compressions in a row to create enough pressure to get enough blood to the brain. The goal of Hands-Only CPR is to achieve 100 to 120 compressions a minute.

It’s important to learn Hand-Only CPR because:• As many as 400,000 people will suffer an out-of-hospital cardi-

ac arrest this year• Eighty-eight percent of these cardiac arrest will occur at home• Many victims appear healthy, with no know heart disease or

other risk factors• For every minute that CPR is not administered, the victim’s

chance of survival drops by 10 percent• Effective bystander CPR provided immediately after sudden

cardiac arrest can double or triple a victim’s chance of survival. The American Heart Association trains approximately 18 million

people in CPR annually. Their mission is to equip the public with the skills they need to effectively perform bystander CPR.

TVH supports this cause and has partnered with the American Heart Association to provide free Hands-Only CPR classes for all employees at all of our locations. These 30 minute classes consist of a short training video and then participants are able to practice chest compressions on a CPR mannequin that clicks when the chest is pressed hard enough, simulation the force needed to accurately perform CPR. Employees are also encouraged to pass on what they have learned to their friends and family members.

By providing Hand-Only CPR to all TVH employees it is our hope that they will have the confidence to perform Hands-Only CPR if it is ever needed, because the life they save could be a friend, co-worker or family member.

Industry NewsWire decks and load distribution

Th ere’s a lot of confusion surrounding wire decks and load distribution, and for good reason. When wire deck capacity is listed, for example, is the manufacturer referring to the wire deck itself, or the deck in combination with the beams it’s sitting on? Is the capacity the same regardless of the type of load? What about the shape of the support channels? Th ese are all common questions, and we’ve worked to address them in other wire deck articles. Some of the most common, and often some of the most important questions we encounter are those related to wire deck capacity and load distribution. In other words, customers need to know how wire deck capacities change when the weight-bearing area of the decks changes. Th ese questions are important because their answers can directly aff ect how the decks are used. Th is in-formation helps prevent end users from misusing or overloading decks, and helps everyone involved gain a better understanding of the decks’ true weight capacity.

Th e rule of thumb to remember when reviewing a customer’s load capacity for a given wire deck is that it is important to make sure the load is uniformly distributed. Capacity ratings are usual-ly based on Uniformly Distributed Loads, i.e. loads that are even-ly spread across the surface of the deck. If a customer has a line, concentrated or point load, this is considered a Non-Uniformly Distributed Load, and the original deck capacity will no longer apply. Th is type of load may require a special design to avoid risk of failure. To make sure there’s no confusion, let’s review some of the defi nitions of these diff erent types of load distribution.

Uniformly Distributed Load (UDL): UDL refers to any static load which is evenly distributed over the entire surface on the rack deck. Th is means the product being stored on the deck must cover the entire deck from side to side and front to back.

Line Load: Line load refers to any static load which distrib-utes its weight in a concentrated line. For example, a load on a pallet which only has two boards running parallel with the wire deck channels would be considered a line load. In this situation, it could cause the wire to carry the entire load.

Point Load: Any static load that is concentrated to particular points on the deck. Th e most common example of a point load application is a heavy piece of equipment that has small feet. In this example, the weight of the equipment is so heavily concen-trated in the relatively small feet, that it causes visible sagging.

Now that you’re more familiar with wire deck capacity and load distribution, you can apply this knowledge by confi dently choosing wire decks that are appropriate for the application they’ll be used for, and also discourage use that may compromise the decks’ structural integrity and become a safety hazard.
