Maternal and Child HealthBlock Grant (MCHBG)

Improve the health and well-being of the nation’s mothers, infants, children and youth, including children and youth with special health care needs, and their families

Nation’s oldest, federal-state partnership (1935)o Permanently authorized in Title V of Social Security Acto Congress sets funding annuallyo Funding agency is Health Resources and Services

Administration, Maternal and Child Health Bureau

Title V funds distributed to all 50 states, District of Columbia and eight U.S. territories

Five-Year MCH Needs Assessment

Required as part of MCHBG

Identify:o The need for preventive and primary care services for:■ pregnant women, mothers and infants up to age one; ■ children; and■ children with special health care needs

o Emerging public health issueso State’s capacity and resources to address them

To be used as basis to set priorities for five-year state action plan for MCHBG …

… but useful for other programs and purposes as well
