Math 0097 and 0099 The First Day

A 15-minute speed-slide introduction to this course


This is your most important course

• Math 0097 & 0099 are ROADBLOCKS.• Example: You cannot enroll in Anatomy &

Physiology until you “exit” from Math 0099.• And that in turn can delay your acceptance into

the Nursing program, for example.• And many programs only have Fall entry, so the

delay can turn into 1 whole year, 2 whole years.• Similar situations happen if you are planning a

major in business or education or whatever.



• So you want to do it right on the first try.• GOAL: Get this course out of the way!• That gets you to where you really want to be,

in the courses for your major program.

• You’re stuck - you can’t drop this course unless you drop credit courses like Psychology, Government, Public Speaking, etc., first.



Here’s the Recipe For Success:1. Attend every class and make the time count.2. And about 3-4 HOURS of OUTSIDE WORK

TIME every week, too. (5-6 hours if summer or B-Term). The time in class alone is not enough.

If you leave out one of these ingredients, you won’t get good results.

• Two semesters is standard • NEEDS OUTSIDE HOMEWORK TIME, too !!!• 5 modules in each semester is good– #1, 2, 3, 4, 5 first semester, and #6 too if you can– #6, 7, 8, 9, 10 second semester– “Exit Exam” at the end of it all

• No “homework” time outside of class? Lots of absences? Probably THREE semesters

• About $500 for an extra course + $xx,000 missed salary opportunities due to delayed graduation.

• Risky – no room for error on third attempt If you don’t finish in three attempts, the College puts you on a one-year suspension.

2. Your Day-by-Day current module schedule (link)– You have a “standard” one.– But if you work faster or slower, we’ll build a new one.

• Keep these two items in front of your notebook. • Re-do them if you work ahead or fall behind.

You can Fast-Forward

• If you believe you can “Fast-Forward” past an entire module, visit with the instructor. There’s a way to “test out of a module”.

• If you believe you can “Fast-Forward” all the way to the end of Math 0097 or 0099, visit with the instructor. There’s a way to “test out of the course”.

• Follow instructions in “The Maze”. Carefully !• If you sign up for the free temporary access, you

will have to buy permanent access soon. Use your current module’s course ID when you do the conversion to permanent access. ASK FOR HELP if you need it. Don’t lock yourself out!!!

• If you use a credit card to purchase it here at a lab computer, go to Library or Lab 203 to do it, because this lab’s computers have restrictions.


Where should I sit?

• If you might need a lot of help from the instructor, try to choose an aisle seat so it’s easier to visit with you.

• EXAMINEES may be required to temporarily move to a particular workstation. Why? Appearances count. Integrity. The reputation of the College. Avoid scandal.


What happens during class time?

1. Doing problems in MyMathLab with help from instructor as needed. (Videos, too. Bring earbuds or click CC, Closed Caption.)

2. Taking Exams when you’re ready. If you fail, you retake the exam as often as needed.

3. Mini-Lecture. Stop. We do a lesson together.4. Brief break time5. More work on assignments and exams.

When is class time?

1. Be on time. Promptly. One second late means less than full credit for attendance.

2. Break time is at a set time. Optional.3. Stay until the end. When is the end? It is at

___________ PLUS add on as much time as you took for your break. Just because someone else leaves doesn’t mean it’s time for you to leave.


When is class time?

4. Only the standard scheduled class meeting time counts toward attendance. There’s no “comp time” to make up for time missed.

5. Your attendance data will be posted in GeorgiaVIEW online gradebook so you know where you stand. Or visit and ask if you are concerned about your scores.

6. Going under 80% attendance is big trouble.

• They are a distraction.• YOUR GRADE WILL BE PENALIZED!• Recommended: leave them in your car.• Otherwise POWERED OFF and INVISIBLE.



• Vibrate Mode is NOT ACCEPTABLE.• Texting / Checking texts is NOT ACCEPTABLE.• Leaving the room to take a call or make a call

is NOT ACCEPTABLE.• The “Pocket Maneuver” is a violation, too.• The “sit on it and glance down at your lap”

and the “open handbag” tricks are violations.• Summary: two letters, N and O, NO.



• DO NOT JUST “ASSUME” that you have an exception because your situation is “special”.

• GET APPROVAL IN ADVANCE if you have a rare unusual situation for one certain day.
