Teacher Notes Learning Objective The student will be able to write the set of rules for an algorithm or a mathematical process by changing the lyrics of a popular/holiday song and singing it using the melody for that song. Mathematics Benchmarks - Common Core Standards The topics available for the songs have to be chosen from the curriculum covered by the Common Core Standards. The timing for this project is recommended for the last few weeks of school; the duration of the project is approximately 5-8 school days. State of Florida Related Benchmark: LA.910.1.6.1 , LA.910.4.2.1 the student will be able to write in a variety of informational and expository forms to justify computations and results using appropriate vocabulary. Singing Competition One of the best ways to remember mathematical rules is to write lyrics and put them to music. To create their song students will be asked to think of a familiar song that is easy to hum. Original songs are encouraged but not required. In the classroom we call this competition “Math Idol” based on the reality television singing competition created by Simon Fuller. When the writing work is completed, the students will perform in a singing competition. The student may choose to complete this project individually or in groups of 2-4 students. The students will compete in their classroom to choose at least 2-3 winners for that classroom. The winners in the classroom audition will go on to compete in a larger competition that can be organized in the auditorium. It is recommended that the mathematics teacher get approval from Administration and cooperation from other teachers so that the event is a success. It is also possible to get help from the Language Arts Department in the writing portion of this project. It is also recommended to get a few parents to volunteer on the day of the overall singing competition and to help with prizes to be given away. Some schools have even provided Audio Visual equipment so the competition is video-taped and as much help from the staff as possible during the competition. This is a project that students, parents and teachers will enjoy and will remember for a long time.

Learning Objective – The student will be able to write lyrics of a popular/holiday song
and perform in a singing competition. Lyrics must be based on Math Rules or
Procedures we have used in class. To create the lyrics think of a familiar song that
is easy to hum...please see example below. In the classroom we will call this
competition Math Idol based on the reality television singing competition “American
Idol” created by Simon Fuller.
A typed copy of the song is required. Students are encouraged to work in a group of
their choice; group size should not have more than 4 students. If there are any
behavior problems in the group, students will be asked to work individually.

Example Sung to the tune of The Flintstones.
Lyrics by:Jill Nielsen and Sheila Kotter & Mooney
Fractions, adding fractions.
Find a common denominator.
Change the numerator.
Multiply it by the same number.
Add the numerators together.
Keep the same old denominator.
Simplify your answer.
Cancel any common factors.
Don't be a slacker,
and now you've done it right.
