Message from the Headmaster

Summer has ended and the school year has officially begun. As always, this marks a truly exciting time here at Matignon High School, and we are delighted to share many stories with you in this edition of The Green and Gold. This summer began our efforts to reinvigorate the atmosphere of our school building as we worked tobring a more welcoming feel to the main thoroughfare of the school, highlighting those aspects that make Matignon truly special. As the work was underway, I often thought of how many changes have occurred on our campus over its history. How many new coats of paint, new lockers, renovated classrooms, updated athletic fields, new trophies to display, and more. While the face of our school has remained very similar all these years, the small changes on the inside have been constant, and numerous.

Any time I reflect on the changes which have occurred at Matignon High School throughout its history however, I am always amazed at what truly has not changed. There have been physical changes, dedicated faculty have come and gone, and we have welcomed and bid farewell at graduation to thousands of different students, but at our core, we are still Matignon.

One important area has had steadfastly remained: our mission. Matignon High School continues to serve families who see in our school the hope for a bright future for their children. Our families sacrifice to provide a private, Catholic education for their children, in a world where such an education is not always valued; and not easily attainable. We strive to keep our tuition moderate, but the costs of running a comprehensive high school continue to escalate. Our fami-lies, believing in the impact of our product, choose to prioritize this valuable educational product for their children. It is clear, that this has been a constant of Matignon families since our inception.

We remain true to our mission and to these families. We have graduated many good and compassionate young women and men, who have gone on to make a difference in many lives. And we are most proud of the fact, that today, as throughout our history, we live up to the challenge of Cardinal Cushing, who said at our dedication, “May Matignon High School ever send forth from its doors, graduates, both young men and young women, so burning to imitate Father Matignon’s many virtues and cultivate his great learning and be so filled with his ideals of service that no cry of human need, no syllable of spiritual striving will ever fall unheeded on their ears. Thus and only thus will this be a fitting memorial for Father Matignon.”

Faces have changed, paint colors have changed, but the essence of Matignon High School has not. May God bless each of you and please continue to pray and support our students and our entire community.

Sincerely,Timothy M. Welsh, Headmaster

Message from the PresidentI have the pleasure to be entering my 6th year as President of the Board of Trustees, and I must say that every year brings new excitement, innovation, and of course, need to Matignon High School. Matignon is freshening up its look in many ways, as we also enter our second year as a device based school. The teachers and staff are continually looking for more ways to be innova-tive in the classroom and out, and I am amazed by how engaged our students are in all avenues of the Matignon Community.

This past May the school held its second annual Matignon High School Tradition of Excellence Gala. And true to their form, our alumni, parents, and friends turned out in full force to support the students here. For the second straight year the dinner raised over $200,000 for financial assistance for students with over 200 people celebrating the past, present, and future of Matignon.

While the tuition assistance realized from this event is important to helping make Matignon affordable for many of our students, the evening has really come to be special for the recognition of honorees in three categories: Outstanding Achievement by an Alumnus; Green and Gold Legacy Award for service to Matignon; and the Cardinal Cushing Community Service Award. It is a time that brings the Matignon community together to celebrate the school’s history and many successes, its mission and future.

A critical step to building a successful future is growing and broadening our board of directors. The board plays an essential role in the governance and devel-opment of the school. We have a wealth of experience in our alumni in many fields that we can tap for our board needs. Equally important, we have alumni who believe in the mission of Matignon and want to contribute their part to sustaining Matignon for years to come. Our recruitment of new board members is an ongoing effort, and we are always looking for new alumni and friends to engage in the discussion. I would ask any of you who might be interested in serving on the board to please contact Timothy Welsh, our headmaster, at [email protected].

Your support of Matignon is deeply appreciated. I look forward to engaging with you in the year ahead.

Best Wishes, Edward T. Holleran, Jr. ’65

Acceptances of Class of 2016The Class of 2016 were accepted to the following schools. We wish them good luck and continued success as they begin the next chapter in their lives.

Matignon Graduates!

This past spring Matignon High School celebrated its sixty-eighth annual commencement exercises on Thursday, May 26. With nearly 120 seniors walking across the stage, Matignon was both blessed and humbled to celebrate its largest graduating class in over a decade.

Our newest alumni spent four years shaping themselves at Matignon to become women and men that reflect

the characteristics of Father Matignon while always striving to expect excellence. And it is clear, in remarks from valedictorian Maggie Barrett, that they all feel the same way.

“This class is filled with amazing, intelligent, talented, compassionate people and we all have incredible adventures in store for us. So we can’t let our choices be ruled by fear of the unknown. The unknown is nothing more than an opportunity for growth, a chance to experience the world in new and different ways.”

Joining our graduates in May was the illustrious Class of 1966, Matignon’s Golden Jubilarians. A tremendous celebration of their time at Matignon and commitment to each other through the years. “There are no friends like close friends, the ones you make at Matignon. Stay close, their value in your life is immeasurable.”—Peter Sullivan ’66

Matignon’s Papal Pilgrimages

The 2015-2016 school year at Matignon High School saw an opportunity for students

and staff to reconnect with their faith, reflecting back on the roots of our school and

namesake, Fr. Francis Matignon.

Last year saw new formats for student retreats, an opening staff retreat, additional service opportunities for our students and a new focus on celebrating liturgy as a community. Additionally, the Matignon community was blessed with three amazing trips to witness first-hand the work and seat of his Holiness, Pope Francis.

An Eye on the Vatican Museums: Seeing the Miracle of Art “I am truly blessed to go to Matignon High School, where such a trip is possible.” So said Angelina Kemmett, a sophomore from Somerville, who with Junior Patrick Harris of Woburn, had just returned from a private guided tour through the Vatican Museums with a special focus on the visually impaired multi-sensory exhibit. They had both won an essay competition at Matignon, where students were asked earlier this year “Why is it important for the visually impaired to “see” the art in the Vatican Museums?” Eight judges from around the world selected the two win-ners, with the award a trip with two chaperones to the Vatican Museums. The idea for this contest originated with alumnus Dr. David A. Sullivan ’66 of Harvard Medical School and Schepens Eye Research Institute, who is a member of the International Patrons of the Arts of the Vatican Museums (http://www.vaticanpatrons.it). The goals were to enrich the lives of Matignon students, increase Matignon’s global recognition, and help the International Patrons de-velop relationships with Catholic Schools. The International Patrons, explained co-Founder Amy Gallant Sullivan, “are dedicated to the preservation and the perpetuation of arts, antiquities and sculptures in the Vatican Museums with a special focus on making art accessible to all, even those with disabilities (e.g. blindness) who otherwise would not be able to participate.” “This trip was life-altering,” said Harris, “and I learned about how all people can “see” the awe-inspiring artwork in the Vatican Museums.” One of the chaperones, Susan Lenn John-son, a Matignon theology teacher and campus minister, stated “I had never before considered the importance of accessibility of artwork for the visually impaired. I feel like this opened a whole new way for me to think of both artwork and our abilities. I can already recognize myself looking at accessibility to many things in our city differently too.”

“This was a once-in-a-lifetime trip,” said Christopher Martin, the other chaperone and Chief Advancement Officer at Matignon. And most importantly, said Sullivan, this initiative addressed the missions of both Matignon and the International Patrons: Matignon is committed to promoting academic excellence and student growth; and the International Patrons are dedicated to bringing togeth-er all individuals who have an appreciation for art, history and restoration.

the Vatican Museums, and help support future programs like this,

Philadelphia Pilgrimage for World Meeting of Families In September 2015, 19 Matignon students and 5 staff members traveled to Philadelphia on a pilgrimage to witness Pope Francis’ first visit to the United States. The trip was one of a life-time for these students who had the opportunity to be in communion with each other as well as the millions of other pilgrims who made this faith filled journey. Standing on Pope Francis’ parade route around Inde-pedence Hall, the joy, excitment, and energy of our students and the other pilgrims was palpable.

“Seeing Pope Francis in person was one of the most meaningful moments I have experienced. The energy was so intense that I felt exhausted afterwards, still, I wish the moment had lasted longer.”—Ms. Lenn Johnson, Theology Teacher and Campus Minister “When Pope Francis passed by us I imagined how the first apos-tles of Christ felt when the Holy Spirit first came down on them. I felt as is a tongue of fire had come down on me and filled me with Christ’s love.”—Michael Medina ’16

Following a historic speech in front of Independence Hall we were then invited to pray the Our Father with his Holiness and all those present. We also heard an enlightening talk on the family, and the trip culminated in Mass celebrated by Pope Francis. The trip was an important opportu-nity for us to remember that the Catholic Church is home for all, and of the good we can do in the world.

World Youth Day – Kraków, PolandMs. Emma Ryder, Social Studies This July, I had the opportunity to travel to Poland for World Youth Day (WYD) in Kraków. WYD, a six day gathering of youth from around the world, was instituted by St. John Paul II to be held every three years in a city of the Pope’s choosing. This being the tenth WYD, I couldn’t imagine a better city than in the very city where St. John Paul II was once archbishop. Prior to the arrival of Pope Francis, we were able to explore various sites of Poland that both challenged and strengthened my faith.

The theme of WYD, “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy” (Mt. 5:7) gave us time to ponder and reflect in the country that gave us the “Mercy Pope” and the Divine Mercy image. It was an experience that touched my heart deeply. I learned to say the words “Jesus I trust in You” with authentic meaning. The Divine Mercy image will now hang in my classroom as a reminder that Divine Mercy is for us all, no matter where we are in our faith journey.

The culminating point of WYD is the Saturday Vigil with the

pope, where he addresses the crowd and leads the people in

prayer, followed by Mass on Sunday for all pilgrims.

“The times we live in do not call for young ’couch potatoes’, but for young people with shoes, or better, boots laced. The times we live in require only active players on the field, and there is no room for those who sit on the bench.”—Pope Francis The Pope is calling for us all, especially our students, to be active in changing the world we live in. To perform the Corporal Works of Mercy--feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, the prisoners, and give to the poor. I hope to work the Pope’s challenge to be “active players on the field” into my classroom, lessons, and activities.

Celebration, Success at Tradition of Excellence Gala“On the fields, in the classrooms, or in the hallways, the entire Matignon community is a team, our team.” — Sean ’17, Woburn

An annual scholarship dinner aimed at supporting Matignon students, this new tradition also serves as an opportunity to recognize alumni and friends

who have long supported Catholic education and made a mark in their field. This past May, Matignon was humbled and blessed to honor three pillars of the Matignon community:

Cardinal CushingCommunity Service Award The Sisters of St. Joseph

Green & Gold Legacy AwardEdward Holleran ’65 President, Matignon Board of Trustees

Distinguished Alumna Award, Inaugural HonoreePatricia D’Amore, PhD ’69

In addition, we are thrilled to be able to celebrate and honor the great history and future of Matignon and its students at this yearly event. The goodwill and camaraderie that came out of the night speaks volumes to the long history of our school. The Tradition of Excellence Gala is a wonderful evening that brings to-gether alumni, parents, and friends to reconnect and celebrate a place that still holds a special place in their heart.

Our honorees showed what it means to be true stewards of Fr. Matignon’s spirit, but it was perhaps best displayed by our student speakers that night. We are so proud of Camila and Sean, and what they, and so many of our students, have accomplished!

“All these different opportunities Matignon has exposed me to have forever shaped my life. Matignon has left its mark on my life from the endless experiences, to the amazing faculty, but most importantly, to the family I was able to create over these four years.” —Camila ’16, Everett

In MemoriamEach year we are saddened to lose members of our Matignon family, but are comforted with the knowledge of the love and legacy they have left behind. In the 2015-2016 school year we lost many wonderful alum-ni, including a member of the Board of Trustees and great pillar of the community: Mary-Beth Krogh-Jespersen, PhD ‘67.

We also want to remember in a special way Mary Kathleen “Kate” Sullivan ‘62.

Kate, who was buried with full military honors, was a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. During the Vietnam War Kate, a decorated nurse, flew in several medical evacuations of

servicemen and Vietnamese citizens. Kate is described as deeply caring and invested in everything she did. Her love for life & adventure is carried on in her four children and four grandchildren. Kate also has six siblings who roamed the halls of Matignon High School in their teenage years, Jody ’60, Albert ’64, David ’66, Christopher ’68, Clare, and Mark ’71.

As we approach All Souls’ Day we will remember all those who have gone before us. Visit our Memorial Page on our website: www.matignon.org/inmemoriam. If you find we are missing someone, please email us at [email protected]. All alumni will be entered into our prayer book in the Chapel at Matignon.

Admissions News

Matignon High School is thrilled to welcome the

Class of 2020 to the Matignon community.

This past June, the Class of 2020 and their families were invited to a school pic-nic, where students had the opportunity to meet teachers and fellow classmates, register for fall sports, review their course schedules, socialize. The Class of 2020 will join the school community by adding to an already vibrant atmosphere at Matignon High School starting in the 2016-2017 school year.

Fall in Matignon Admissions is spent spreading the Matignon name and recruiting new prospective and transfer students. Events like the High School Information Night help to educate families about private and parochial education and Open House events provide a comprehensive and in-depth look into the Matignon ex-perience. Through our Student Shadow Program, over 200 prospective students will have the opportunity to experience life at Matignon by spending the day with a Matignon Student Ambassador, attending classes, eating lunch, and con-necting with other students. Matignon Admissions continues to sponsor a High School Placement Test Prep Course and is a testing site for the exam. Matignon Admissions will be on the road, visiting over 20 Catholic elementary schools and presenting to classrooms of 7th and 8th graders.

Matignon Admissions is unique in that we rely heavily on students to represent and promote the school at all admissions-related events. The Admissions Office is proud and fortunate to collaborate with enthusiastic, bright, and personable students throughout the recruitment season to advance the Matignon name and mission. Matignon High School and Admissions is grateful to the support of families for their involvement and participation.

Here’s to another great recruiting

season and the future of Matignon!

Charting a Path:Career Day 2016By Tim Wilson ’76, Alumni Presenter

Depending on their generation, two dozen MHS alumni experienced a real-life scene from “Time Tunnel,” “Back to the Future,” or “Hot Tub Time Machine” at the biennial Career Day on March 18.

Career Day offered a chance for these Matignon graduates to travel back as many as 50 or as few as five years ago to the halls they once wandered. They came to share their experiences in fields ranging from medicine to law, business to education, and art to engineering. Firefighters, accountants, social workers, police officers and bankers, all returned to One Matignon Road and had a glimpse at the past that formed their future into today’s present.

But more important than the alums’ look back,

was the peek into possible futures they provided

Matignon students.

Keynote speaker Rob Surette from the Class of 1989 established a theme for the day, using his incredible artistic talent to demonstrate that those who achieve great things must first believe in themselves and their dreams. He literally painted a picture for students that the future is in their hands to create.

As the alums were led to classrooms where they would speak to students about

their life and career, there was that moment when they remembered sitting at desks in those same rooms. It made me remember two important things on this day: 1. Perspective makes all the difference and 2. It was a privilege to be participating in Career Day.

Though the classrooms are primarily the same, the view is quite different decades later. While a student at Matignon, next week and next month seemed far enough away to me. Thinking in terms of years and decades was really unfathomable. But time and experience allow you to see the possible future paths that lie in front of a 16-year-old. This is what makes speaking at Career Day a privilege.

Probably more so than with their own children, alums have a chance to help stu-dents look a little further ahead. Teenagers have that special filter they apply when parents talk that sometimes screens out good advice. By starting their conversation with a shared Matignon experience, alums have a chance to make a connection.

Most alums don’t have Rob Surrette’s talent with a paintbrush, but they can help students picture their future in a different way. Serving as tour guides for some of life’s varied paths, alums are able to point out from experi-ence that there are multiple

ways to reach a career destination. Perhaps more importantly, they can offer examples that there are twists in the road – planned and unplanned – that can take you not necessarily to where you

planned but to a better destination.

For me, and I’m sure many other alums at Career Day, the best advice we could offer students on charting a course to the future was to suggest they begin their journey by looking inward. What makes them curious? What makes them excited? What are they good at? How do they think they could make a difference?

It was a privilege to have the opportunity to remind my

future fellow Matignon alumni that when heading down

the road to their future they are

in the driver’s seat. And rather

than relying on a GPS, it’s much

better to take a good look

at the whole map and see the

places you could go.

THANKS TO ALL OUR ALUMNI, PARENTS, FRIENDS,

FACULTY, AND STAFF THAT MADE OUR

2016 CAREER DAY A SUCCESS!

Want to help our students f igure out their future path?

SAVE THE DATE FOR CAREER DAY 2018:Join us in the Spring of 2018 as we once again invite alumni and

friends to campus to share their stories!
