RESEARCH INTERESTS AND METHODOLOGICAL APPROACHES
My primary research focus is decision making with a special interest in social dilemmas, cooperation, and conflict problems between individuals and organizations. I also have a smaller stream of research examining how organizations manage their relationships with members and customers. Where possible, I use multiple methods to study a phenomenon either within or across studies; e.g. laboratory experiments, archival data analysis, field surveys, computer simulations, and/or case methodologies.

SHORT BIOGRAPHY
Matthew W. McCarter is a husband, father, researcher, educator, and student. The first in his family to go to college, he earned a bachelor of science in management from Brigham Young University in 2005 and received his doctorate in business administration at the University of Illinois at Urbana in 2009. That same year, he became an assistant professor of management in the Argyros School of Business and Economics at Chapman University. While at Chapman, he was the youngest in age and job-tenure to achieve the Wang–Fradkin Assistant Professorship, the University’s highest faculty research award. In 2012, he received the Ascendant Scholar Award of the Western Academy of Management. In 2013, he moved to the College of Business of the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). In 2015, UTSA awarded him early tenure and promotion to associate professor of management. For his Spring 2017 sabbatical, Matthew was visiting John Angus Erskine Fellow in the School of Business and Law at University of Canterbury. Matthew has many research interests, but one that never gets old to him is decision making with a focus in the ideas of cooperation, conflict, and social dilemmas. He bridges scholarly conversations by teaming with scholars in a host of fields (e.g. organizational behavior, operations management, strategic management, economics, experimental economics, managerial economics, mathematics, finance, behavioral finance, healthcare management, quantitative psychology, social psychology, and geography) to study strategies that organizations and other collectives may employ to increase effective decision making, trust, and pro–social behavior in alliances, supply chains, public–private partnerships, work teams, and communities. Matthew employs field survey, case study, archival data, simulation, and experimental research methods to capture a fuller picture of how decisions can be effectively made and collective action achieved in organizational settings. He has published in a variety of scholarly journals including Academy of Management Review, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Journal of Operations Management, and Human Resource Management Journal. One of his papers – published in Supply Chain Management: An International Journal – is one of the top 10 most cited papers in the journal’s 22 years. His contributions to academia have been covered by a host of news media outlets including Yahoo–news, FOX News, ABC News, BYU Radio, and Texas Public Radio. He has received research funding from the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, International Foundation of Experimental Economics, the Wang–Fradkin Research Fund at Chapman University, the Ralph W. Leatherby Center at Chapman University, Office of Research at the University of Illinois, Office of the Vice President for Research at UTSA, and the Office of Research of the College of Business at UTSA. As of 2017, his total amount of funds received for research, teaching, and awards exceeds $170,000. Lastly, Matthew is a lover of teaching. In addition to trying to balance on the shoulders of giants of management pedagogy, Matthew develops and employs experimental learning to help his students experience management theory. He has a received several teaching awards including the inaugural 2014–2015 Dean’s Honor Roll Award for Teaching Excellence (with highest honors), the 2016 UT Board of Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award for all of Texas, and the 2017 Richard S. Howe Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award for UTSA.
