Introduction Two meetings have been organised by Carmarthenshire Tourism Association (CTA) to help those involved in Carmarthenshire’s visitor economy to maximise opportunities from 2016’s Year of Adventure. These sessions, facilitated by CTA and Lucy von Weber are part of Carmarthenshire’s Visit Wales funded RTEF project. The first meeting – held at the Mansion House Hotel in Llansteffan on 13th October 2015 laid the foundations for the Year of Adventure – with CTA, Carmarthenshire County Council and Visit Wales sharing background and plans for this. Details of the Roald Dahl Centenary were also shared, again taking place in 2016, this was discussed as an opportunity for offering

something to attract new customers and visitors. It was emphasised though, that are strict copyright rules with using Roald Dahl, his stories and characters in activities – and advice should be sought from Visit Wales on this. The second meeting – held at the Ivy Bush Royal Hotel, Carmarthen on 14th January 2016 focussed more on sharing ideas and plans by the tourism trade for both 2016 campaigns. This is a summary of information shared and discussed at these meeting, and provides an useful resource for businesses wishing to explore how they can get involved in the Year of Adventure…

The funding can be applied for on a rolling basis (i.e. monthly deadlines) and is for provision of writers/artists who can help with a talk, lecture, reading, workshop, panel event, literary walk or something different entirely. If you are an event organiser or run an attraction this may be ideal for you to consider. See "Chapter Two" funding: http://www.literaturewales.org/chapter-x2/en/c15634/ Important: Please be sure that you check copyright permissions with regard to any plans that you may have - Roald Dahl's creations from story narrative and quotes to characters and also items such as Quentin Blake's famous imagery are all subject to copyright: https://www.roalddahl.com/global/contact-us/using-roald-dahls-stories-and-copyrights

March. Bar/cafe open. In addition to all Eleanor's arts and crafts activities for Mums and Tots - next one on 24th March from 1-3pm www.ceridwencentre.co.uk

Other Ideas & Information Shared... Below are some of the other ideas discussed and information shared at January’s workshop:

Gwili Steam Railway: Reminded that a trip on the Railway is a good half day add-on to some of the other attractions and activities in the area. Planning a bug-hunting trail this year. Also introduced High Tea, building on popularity of the Afternoon Tea on the train. This includes addition of glass of prosecco and served in the refurbished carriage. www.gwili-railway.co.uk

Wildfowl & Wetland Trust, Llanelli’s Giant Duck Hunts – discussed the idea of (toy) ducks being photographed at various locations across the county, having their own Carmarthenshire Adventure. Great social media promotion.

Creepy Carmarthen Tours and Llandovery’s Horrible History Tours – discussed potential of Nick Brunger linking up / creating bundles with National Wool Museum, Gwili Railway and Tin Shed Experience www.thespookymagiccompany.co.uk

Inspired 2 Collect Gallery, Cwmcrwth Farm, Lolfa Cynin and Cariad Glass – suggestion for cross referrals, bundles or inclusion in CCC promotional activity as learning something new, as they all offer courses/demonstrations where a new skill is learnt.

Wild Adventures – Chatted about opportunities for CCC social media promotion around the Wildlife / Bugs activities mentioned – i.e. Wildfowl and Wetland Centre, Gwili Steam Railway, Lolfa Cynin.

Carmarthenshire Adventure Blogs – Charlotte Roberson from Old Oak Barn was given as an exemplar for using blogs effectively. Suggestions made to write blogs around visits to various places and tied in to the Year of Adventure, adding to website and social media for increased business profile and referrals to website. www.carmarthenshire-self-catering-accommodation.co.uk/2016-year-of-adventure/

The Heart of Wales Line: Reminded about the train line which can be used as part of an adventure or to travel from one to another. Investment in stations underway, Llandovery done, Llandeilo in process of having a new ‘hub’ www.heart-of-wales.co.uk/forum.htm

Page 10: MAXIMISING WALES YEAR OF ADVENTURE IN … t… · MAXIMISING WALES YEAR OF ADVENTURE IN CARMARTHENSHIRE ... - Production of 7 short themed promotional films – for website and social

New Monthly Storytelling Club in Carmarthen – Started in January 2016 and held at Caffi Iechyd Da in Carmarthen town. Lots of potential for 2017’s Year of Legends. More information from Nick Brunger: www.thespookymagiccompany.co.uk

Tin Shed Experience: A number of suggestions were made for working with the Tin Shed Experience during the Year of Adventure and beyond.

o Tin Shed outside venue could be used and hired during for events, gigs, shows, poems and pints, get-togethers etc - contact Meinir Evans –[email protected]

o Some presentations and memorabilia about World War 1 and 2 could be taken

to businesses (e.g. accommodation, attractions, groups and organisations) to help theme their Adventures Back in Time

o The Millenium Hall next door could also be available for hire for larger

events – contact –[email protected] or visit website - http://laugharnemmhall.com/

Suggestion for creation of Carmarthenshire Adventure logo to be created – and provided as logo/sticker for businesses who’re offering something relevant to the theme to use.

Suggested that many of the activities planned and shared should be included in the Top Ten lists compiled by CCC for promotional work with Wales Online, or on social media in future – e.g. Learn Something New, Wild Adventures etc.
