SENIORS TO SENIORS: YOUTH MINISTRYHOSTED DINNER

Every year, the Youth Ministry Advisory Board works together to set goals for Middle School and High School
Youth Ministry. These goals help drive the theme and focus for the entire year. This year, the board, composed
of staff members, youth representatives from grades 7–12, parents of youth and children, and parishioners whose
children have gone through our programs in the past, decided on three goals:
1. Design and implement a youth ministry retreat with a focus on discipleship.
2. Repairing the world through action: Provide learning
opportunities for our youth to interact with members of
the Jewish and Islamic faiths.
3. Host a dinner, created and run by our middle and high
school youth, to celebrate both the seniors in high
school who will be graduating and the seniors of our
parish.
After achieving our first two goals, we are gearing up for a
fun evening where our youth can interact with our older
St. Catherine’s parishioners as part of our third goal. Why
our seniors? As we planned for the dinner, the youth
commented on how much they enjoy conversation with
people at St. Catherine’s. They especially loved the guest
speakers who have come to Youth Ministry to speak about
various topics. The youth of our parish want to have the
opportunity to exchange stories and conversation while sharing a meal. Youth Ministry is very aware of the
support the seniors of our parish have provided for the youth, and they want to take the opportunity to thank
them for their continued support.
With that, Youth Ministry is hosting a dinner for our parishioners, 60 and older, on Friday, May 31, from 6–8 p.m.
The evening will start with conversation focused on different topics and questions that the youth have come up
with. We will then share a meal, including food made by the Youth Ministry families. We will take time
following the dinner to celebrate our graduating seniors and give them a blessing as they enter this time of
transition in their lives.
In order to ensure that we have enough food and space, we are asking parishioners to RSVP for the dinner. There
are three ways to do this: email Ashley Blank at [email protected]; use this Google Form link: https://
tinyurl.com/seniorstoseniorsdinner2019; or use the form on the inside of this bulletin and turn in to the Parish
Office. Please RSVP by Sunday, May 26. We hope to see you at the dinner!

SOAP FOR HOPE
Next week we will be concluding the Soap for Hope
Campaign. This year is especially challenging because
the Samaritan Center has lost some
grant funding, so their shelves are
completely empty. You can help by
purchasing personal care items that
are so desperately needed by those
who cannot afford them. Items
needed include bar soap, laundry detergent, dish soap,
toilet paper, deodorant (men’s/women’s), feminine hygiene
products, diapers, toothbrushes/toothpaste, facial tissue,
moisturizing lotion, and shampoo/conditioner. Thank you
for your generosity!

SUPPORT FOR BIRTHRIGHT
As is our custom, St. Catherine’s is selling flowers for
Mother’s Day (and Father’s Day in June) to support
Birthright, the nonprofit organization in our
community that supports families facing unplanned
pregnancy. Carnations are $1 each, or 6 for $5. All
profits go to support Birthright’s work providing
clothing, diapers, and other resources to moms and
families who really need the support and help.

SUPPORT FOR ITHACA PREGNANCY CENTER
The Cortland and Ithaca Pregnancy Centers are
raising money to purchase a sonogram machine. This
weekend we are handing out baby bottles to those
who wish to help support this effort. You are
encouraged to fill the baby bottle with donations—
and perhaps encourage friends and family to join
you. If you don’t want to fill a bottle but instead just
make a donation, please make your check out to the
“Cortland and Ithaca Pregnancy Centers” and put it
in the collection, the offering boxes, or drop it off at
the Parish Office. We will be collecting the baby bottle
donations until Father’s Day on June 16.

PARISH TRIP TO ITALYPRAYER
INTENTIONS REQUESTED
We would like to bring you with us as we travel to
Italy. If you have anything you would like us to pray
for, we invite you to email your prayer requests to
Ann Marie at [email protected] no later than
Sunday, May 12, at 3 p.m. She will collect our prayer
requests and they will be laid on the altar as we
celebrate Mass at the Tomb of St. Francis in Assisi and
the Saint John Paul II Altar at the Basilica of St. Peter
in Rome. We also invite you to join us for Mass and
some morning hospitality on Monday, May 13, at 9
a.m. prior to our departure.
The trip will begin with Mass here at St. Catherine’s,
followed by a bus trip to JFK, and an overnight flight
to Rome. From Rome we will travel to Assisi and
spend two days in Assisi. Our time there will include
touring the hermitage that St. Francis frequented, a
tour of the Basilica of St. Francis and the town, and an
afternoon of wine-tasting in the region. We will then
spend a day in Florence, and then travel on to Siena
for next weekend. After Siena, we have three days in
Rome. We will be returning to Ithaca on May 23.

MASS SCHEDULE DURING ITALY TRIP
Please note that there will be no daily Mass during the
weeks of May 13 and May 20 while Fr. Joe is in Italy.
Bishop Matthew Clark will be here for Mass and the
Sacrament of Reconciliation on May 18–19; Fr. Richard
Crawley will be here for the 5 p.m. and 9 a.m. Masses
and Reconciliation on May 25–26; and Fr. Dan
McMullin will be here for the 11:30 a.m. Mass on May

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION
We are so grateful for all our volunteers, who do so
much for us here at St. Catherine’s. We will hold our
annual Volunteer Appreciation event
on Tuesday, June 4, from 6–8:30
p.m. in Mahler Hall. Anyone who
has volunteered for us in any
capacity is more than welcome to
join us for refreshments, hors
d’oeuvres, and desserts. We hope
you will enjoy an event where your
only job is to come, have fun, and
enjoy tasty treats, good drink, and
each other’s company; no setup or cleanup required!
Spouses, significant others, and children are all
welcome, too. We hope to see you there!

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY
Our volunteer crafters have been busy knitting,
crocheting, and sewing beautiful prayer shawls and
lap blankets to be given to anyone in need of a warm
hug. If you know a person who is experiencing a
trying time in their life, please feel free to take an item
for them. We have a basket in the Pastoral Care Room
filled with items recently blessed by Fr. Joe. Please fill
out the signout sheet on the clipboard when you take
an item. If you would like to help us create these cozy
gifts, we welcome your assistance. We meet on the
second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 7 p.m.
in the Pastoral Care Room. Half of our crafters work
only from home. If you have no time for a meeting
but can make a shawl, we welcome your gifts. You
may make whatever you like. We also have simple
patterns to share and will suggest a yarn type. Please
contact Jeanne Luzzi at [email protected] or 257-
5388 with any questions.

PARISH CENTER ACCIDENT UPDATE

June 2, Mahmud Barton, president of the Islamic
Center of Ithaca, will talk to us about Ramadan.

MOVIE NIGHT
Our next Movie Night will be on Monday, May 20.
We will be viewing The Saint and the Sultan, the

in history changed the course of the Crusades.
Members of the Al-Huda Islamic Center have been
invited to join us for this film, followed by a
discussion. The movie begins at 6:30 p.m. We won’t be
serving dinner at this Movie Night because of the fast
for Ramadan.
D.R. CLUB UPDATE
On the day that registration opens for the next
school year in Monte Plata, Sr. Iris, the principal of
the Portal de Belén, is met with a long line of
parents when she arrives to the school at 7 a.m.
Parents line up at the crack of dawn because they
know that their children need the love, food, and
education that the Portal de Belén provides. Sr. Iris
interviews the parents and works hard to make
sure that she picks the families that are most in
need of what the Portal can offer. She usually only
has space for about 30 children because younger
siblings get automatic registration. It is a heart-
breaking day when she has to turn many needy
families away. Congratulations to this week’s D.R.

May God bless your marriage!
FROM THE BOOK OF ANN MARIE
Dear Parish Family,
As a lifelong Church minister and creative soul, I often encounter things in the world and
immediately think about how I might use them to teach a lesson or incorporate them into
prayer. For many years, I have wanted to do an activity with the parents of young people who
are in the midst of transition—from middle school to high school, high school to college, or any
big change. The activity is inspired by the song “Everyone’s Free (to Wear Sunscreen)” by Baz
Luhrmann. You probably know it. It begins with this: “Ladies and gentlemen of the class of ’97. Wear
sunscreen. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of
sunscreen have been proven by scientists, where the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own
meandering experience. I will dispense it now.”
The song goes on to give advice like:
Be kind to your knees; you will miss them when they’re gone.
You are not as fat as you imagine.
Do one thing every day the scares you.
 Floss.
Keep your old love letters; throw away your old bank statements.
Don’t read beauty magazines; they will only make you feel ugly.
I have always wanted to bring parents together to create their own list of information they have learned that
they want their children to know. In planning this activity in my head, I always get stymied by the parent who
will think that they aren’t creative enough to do this activity. The reason the song strikes me as a good jumping
off point is because the advice is so normal—and yet taken all together (there’s much more than I have noted
above), it is profoundly helpful to think about. I think that parents know a lot of things that could help their
children navigate life, but they probably think most of it is too “simple” to say.
Just this week, I came across Sarah Hart’s song that she wrote for her daughter’s graduation last year. Sarah
was here at St. Catherine’s about six years ago, and we often sing her songs at Mass. She is a prolific writer of
Catholic music and has a beautiful voice and heart. The song is “Do No Harm.” I was really drawn to her
words of wisdom to her daughter—so different from “Everyone’s Free,” but it comes from that same place of
trying to help the younger generation navigate the complexities of life. Here are just a few of the lines from the
song:
Leave some flowers in the field, do not take more than your share.
Leave some brilliance there, Love, for beauty heals.
In life we want to keep, to hold, to own,
But it’s true some things are better left alone.
Oh darling, do no harm.
Again, this song makes me want to gather people and give them time to think about the things they have
learned throughout their lives (however long their lives have been) so that they can capture these truths for
themselves (and maybe also share them with others). We all have wisdom. We have all learned a lot of things
the hard way, and although that almost never stops someone else from needing to learn that same lesson the
hard way, sometimes when we recall them and name these truths, it can prevent us from making the same
mistakes over again. It can also remind us of how we want to live. “Be kind to your knees” is something I think
about all the time because of this song. And I love Sarah Hart’s truth of “Do no harm” as her starting and
ending point for all decisions.
Anyone want to take a day this summer, when the sun is out and the church is empty, to create your own life’s
lesson list? I’m in if you are.
Peace,
A vibrant Catholic Community where all are welcomed, challenged, and supported in their life’s journey.

KINGDOM BUILDERS PROJECTS FOR CONFIRMATION

As part of our Confirmation program, our middle school youth were given the task to design a project with
their small groups that would “build the Kingdom of God.” We purposely designed this project around a
simple idea so the youth could base the project on their own gifts and
passions. The project had three components: a price point, a due date for
completion, and the requirement that the project had to build the Kingdom
of God. At the first gathering for Kingdom Builders, the youth and their
faith mentors brainstormed all possible ideas. By the end of that session,
they had to narrow their ideas down to their top three. The second session
asked them to pick one of their three choices and begin the process of
outlining and planning their project—the timeline, supply list, job
responsibilities, and so on. They finalized their projects on April 28. The
youth were also asked to let the parish know about their projects. Below,
you will find writeups about some of the groups’ projects, along with the names of the youth and their faith
mentors. We will publish the rest of the projects in subsequent bulletins.
Youth: Diego Danner-Casasola, Evie Doyle, Thomas Gondeck, Jack Negley, Domenica Reeves, Will Thomas, Ben
Velasquez
Faith Mentor: Laurie Venuto
We created and assembled thirty activity packs for children who need something to do in the waiting room at
the Cayuga Medical Emergency Department. Some of us worked together to create the activity booklet, while
others worked on collecting items for each activity pack and assembling the packs. Each pack will include a
handwritten note from us as well. We believe this builds the Kingdom of God because helping those who are
sick brings joy and also distraction while they are waiting to be seen. We want to support and help others,
letting them know that someone cares for them.

of soda cans. We chose to spend our Youth Ministry time on Sunday, April 28, recycling the cans at the Finger
Lakes Beverage Center. We chose this activity because we care about our environment and Mother Earth.
Catholic Social Teaching askes us to care for God’s creation. After recycling we received $40 from the recycling
goods. We are going to donate this money to the Land Trust Alliance, which works to save the places people
need and love by strengthening land conservation across America. We enjoyed our day and look forward to
continuing to serve in our community.

One of the Catholic Social Teachings is care for God’s creation. We wanted to choose a project that had us
celebrating God’s creation while also feeding those who don’t have access
to healthy fruits and vegetables. Our group project was focused on helping
out with the parish garden so we could play a part in providing food to
Loaves and Fishes. We began this project by contacting Robin Tobin,
steward to the garden, and asking about helping. She met us on Sunday,
April 28, during our Youth Ministry session time to weed, rake, and fix the
gate. We plan to go back as needed to plant and harvest the vegetables.
We chose this project because we wanted to help out in a unique way and
help our neighbors who are hungry. Thank you to Robin Tobin for taking
the time to meet with us and lead us in preparing the garden for a great
growing season.
