We are thrilled Richie Sposato, President of Lane #1 chose the Mini-Eliminator to introduce his newest ball the “Time Bomb”. Everyone purchasing a Marathon Entry or Mini Marathon Entry will receive the new ball as a bonus.

Back From IRAQ FRED RIANO is Averaging 226!

by Frank WeilerMURRIETA—How many

Marine Sergeants come off base and bowl at a 226 pace? One for sure, Fred Riano. Fred is bowling in his first season since returning last summer from a year in IRAQ And WOW, is he bowling up a desert storm.

With consistent three gamers of 700 plus, and highs of 290 and 759, Fred has kept his average in the high 220s all year. This on a difficult dry oil condition at CAL OAKS BOWL.

Riano has a free and easy re-lease, rolling a smooth ball at high speed.

Many times his strike ball reg-isters 20 MPH on the computer score screen.

So many young bowlers have told me they wish they could bowl like Fred, smooth with power. Power with precision.

Thanks for serving our country honorably Fred, and my wishes for many big scores for you to come. The Bowling News wishes to rec-ognize your accomplishments on the lanes and in defense of the United States of America.

Sargent is ABTA Winner at Bowling Square (L-R) Aaron Hodges Runnerup $550, Jeffrey Sargent (Champ) $2,475, Jeff Taino 3rd and Womack Stephens 7th.

ARCADIA—Well another Saturday night at Bowling Square will be memorable as Jeffrey Sargent stepped up and won his first ABTA title win-ning five straight matches in the top 16 single elims and fi-nally edged the top seed Aaron Hodges to take home a tidy $2,475 for the win. Jeffrey was happy to say the least. Jef-frey is deserving and bowls most events in the ABTA that he can and liked by all. Con-grats!!

The scoring was again quite high this eve and mak-ing the cut were Men +98 and the ladies a near record +87 to make the semis and also added were Super Seniors Tim Aus-tin, Javier Avila, and Bobbie McCollum.

A fine turnout of 237 bowl-ers saw 62 Semifinalists cash in the semi finals. The Semifi-nalists take the floor, of which all would cash and the top 16 to advance to the single elim finals with 3 women min guar-anteed to the top 16.

The scoring was conten-tious with a nice +98(men) and three guaranteed women +76 to make the top 16 Single Elim Finals.

Hunter/900 Global top the field with a humongous +195. So he would sit out and bowl for the title. Kevin Valmonte was runner up +167 and he will receive a first round bye in the finals and seeded to the top 9.

The first round went. We had Lyn Lam, Patricia Lin, John Pham, Steven Au, BK, Tim Austin and Giang Huynh lose out. They received checks of $100 in 10-16th places.

Round two had Marv Crowder, Jeanette Chang, Kev-in Valmonte and Womack Ste-phens lose out and get checks of $110 in 6-9th places.

Round three got hot as Jeff Taino edged Victor Lee 235-221. Jeff Sargent won a good one downing Samson Kong 248-242. Victor and and Sam-son were in 4-5th places and $120.

Now it is Jeff and Jeffrey for the right to bowl Hodges for the title. Sargent came through in a 202-190 game and on to the title game with Taino in 3rd with great bowl-ing to say the least. That was his lowest game of the day I think :)

The title game was on. Jeff led off with a strike and open frame 2, 10 pin. Aaron

also struck and whiffed the 5 pin and going to the frame 6 they were both clean but Aar-on chopped a spare and began a night mare leaving a bad luck 4-9 on the 7th.

Jeffrey doubled in 8-9 frames and Aaron spared and struck in 9 then again first of the 10th and needed another strike but left a high shot and the title went to the nice guy from Anaheim. He was a hap-py guy in a 178/210-169/191 measure. He has been a fine ABTA member and friend for 14 years and a nicer guy you cannot find. Title #2 is in his future. Great bowling Jeffery. YOU are now an ABTA Titli-est!

Fine bowling til the title game by another nice young man Aaron Hodges. He will win in the future. A fine bowl-er and great competitor.

Jeff Taino, a Champion had a great night at Bowling Square also. He is one of the “Good Guys” and is nice to be around.

Tourney Notes: Hi Quali-fiers were Jeff Taino +254 men and Tessie Sosa blasted a + 154 to lead the ladies. They will get paid entries for the fine bowling.

The Doubles were headed

by Taino again? YES! He and Vuong Do 1533 for $170. Taino/Mike Villarreal 1520, also1520 were Michael Kong, and Ryan Nam and $150. We paid out 21 places and $1,730 in the doubles.

The 3-6-9 was NOT Hit as Danny Guevarra out-did the field but missed on shot 4. So we go for a cool $900 this week Folks! Danny got $50 Consolation for Merlot :-)

The Match Game was matched by three of our fin-est and they share the $3,500 pot. They are Kerry Lucka, Stephen Au and a pretty New-comer Dunisha Wright. They get $1,166 each for their fine 180 game. The Match Game is again $3,500 this Saturday at CAL Bowl.

The Match Series worth $410 was matched by Da-vid Quon, Dillon Itp, and Mr Lucky Dillon Ito and for a $2.00 entry, you can’t top that! Their series was a 572.

Jeffrey Sargent is from Anaheim, and used a Street

Rod drilled by Kert Kinoshita at 10th Frame Pro Shop in The Concourse. He’s married to Myrsha with a daughter Nata-lie. He thanks the ABTA Staff , for a job well-done and thanks to wife and daughter for sup-port, and love.

Aaron Hodges is from Glendale and single! He used a 900 Global/Bounty Hunter drilled by Brandon Mc Gin-nis at Up Your Alley Pro Shop. He thanks the ABTA Staff and Bowling Square for hosting and to friends and Family for support.

Jeff Taino hails from Chino Hills married to Cindy with son Justin also an ABTA mem-ber. He used a Virtual Gravity drilled by ABTA Member Ben Mach at Westminster Lanes. He thanks ABTA and Staff and wife Cindy and Justin for all of the support.

It was great to return to Bowling Square, where every-one has a great time and scores will be lower next time :-)

Special thanks to Cheryl,

Tony and the staff. We return there July 31 with lower scores and fair condition. It is His-tory folks as Jeffrey Sargent enters the archives as our lat-est champion.

Drawing winners were Velinda Kelly, 2 nights in Las Vegas, ABTA Shirt Ping Romero, Ball to Alpine Tran, ABTA reg entry to Ariel O’ Campo and Las Vegas Entry to Steve Brode. Win Yours next week, tickets for $5 100% re-urn.

It is History as Jeffrey Sar-gent enters the archives as our latest Champion at Bowling Square! We bowl Saturday at CAL Bowl in a one day. See our ad for info and squad times. The next Saturday May 22 our long awaited return to Brunswick Foot Hill Lanes in Fontana. Handicap is frozen at Foothill for the big Memo-rial Event May 27-28-29-30 at West Covina Lanes.

Teams appear out of order because standings are determeined by percentage of wins to losses, NOT total points

“STRIKEHARDAPP.COM”OVER-ALL POINTS LEADER DOWNEY — Monday night lanes 21-22 was the pair to watch. “STRIKEHARD” and “WESTERN PACIFIC” (both round winners) put on a good show, won a little side pot money and relaxed. “SYSCO” and “CLYDE’S VIDEO” have only one more week to snag the last Wild Card spot. And I do believe they will actually be scheduled against each other (don’t quote me). May 24 the league will have their sweeper, and the following week the rolloffs begin! It has been a weekly grind with the pat-tern changes. Not like the past years with a “HOUSE SHOT” and the “EASY ROUND”. From the very beginning of this league — 20 years ago — the house offered $5,000 for a 300 game rolled during the “TOUGH ROUND”. No takers. This year six 300’s were shot — but not at the right time. Are bowlers getting wiser or are the balls producing bet-ter scores? That debate goes on anytime bowlers get together. Let’s get on with this week’s top scores: Paul Varela 257/633, Shane Soper 240-225/657, Billy Myers Jr. 236-226/687, William Jackson 229-218-207/654, David Bartlett 243-222/648 and Arnold Cheesman 247-225/629. Big money is on the line the next two weeks — Catch the show Monday at 8:30 P.M. LIVE!

Daniel Vasquez Hits 299/766 In Open Commercial At Brunswick Upland Bowl UPLAND — This writer got an email from Daniel Vasquez whom this writer had wondered how Danny had been doing since last Febraury when he led his team with a 712 series in the SNCDBA tournament at Canyon Lanes in Cabazon. The smooth rolling La Puente righthander informed me that he bowls Tuesday nights in the Open Commercial League at Brunswick Upland Bowl. On the league’s final night May 4 he rolled a 299 game in the first game. “I hit a beautiful pocket hit and left a 4-pin”, Danny wrote. “Before the league’s start, I had muscle spams on my left shoulder and was not sure if I was going to bowl that night.” So he decided to test and see how he felt. There was a little pain but he did not want to give up because it was his league’s last day of the season. Danny continued, “I was being positive and just focused on the lanes and was not expecting to bowl 299 in the first game, so I finished with 233 and 234 for a 766 series. I am honored to finish with my highest career average of 217 and my goal was to get in 220s.” This 299 is his career second as this writer recalled Danny’s first 299 also bowled in the first game at Anaheim Concourse Lanes a few years ago. On that same day and time, Danny’s teammate and tutor Carl Malucci in The Concourse league rolled a 300 in the second game. That prompted this writer to kid Carl who had many 300s for showing Danny, his close friend, teammate and student, to which Carl responded, “Hey. I was just showing Danny the correct way to get a 300 is to leave no pins standing up on the last ball.” Eventually, Danny had learned from the master as in the following year at Brunswick West Covina Bowl, Danny left no pins standing on his 12th ball for his career first 300. He had been taught lots by Carl as he finished, with his previous best 214 average. Then when Carl moved to Las Vegas, Danny hooked up with Mark Fisser as his tutor. Graciously he ended to with,”I want to thank Carl Malucci and Mark Fisser for training me, teaching me, and traveling with me to all around tournaments to be a better bowler.” That is a nice tribute from Daniel Vasquez who listened to the stars of the game. In their youth, Carl Malucci and Mark Fisser were outstanding Junior bowlers on the JAT tour in early 1980s. In one JAT tournament finals, Carl and Mark both made the TV title finals which Carl won (This writer was invited to witness the first historical TV match of two deaf bowlers and donated the video tape to the Bowling Hall of Fame.) Mark also was a star in the LA Junior Traveling League being the first ever deaf bowler selected as ABC Star of Tomorrow in 1986 and continued to star on the Professonal Coast Bowlers Tour, winning the Tournament of Champions. He also bowled almost two years of the PBA Tour in late 1980s. Carl is making a big name for himself with the deaf bowlers’ most 300 games and 800 series, holding the deaf bowlers record high average of 246. Daniel Vasquez is an upcoming and coming bowler with potential in the coming future.

Sarah SainRollsHer First 300 At Red Rock Lanes LAS VEGAS — Jim Mohr reported that Sarah Sain, a daughter of long time Las Vegas deaf bowling parents, Sammy and Winie Sain bowled her first perfect game in the Wednesday Mountaineers League at Red Rock Bowl last May 5. That made both Sammy and Winnie proud of her and raised Sarah’s average to 190. This writer contacted Jim for further infor-mation for few two other games and series.

Not Official — 22 Men Teams & 12 Women Teams In Coming PCDBA Tourney

FULLERTON — Although not offically, this writer was told there might be 22 men teams and 12 women teams in the coming PCDBA and PCDWBA tournaments held on the Memorial Day weekend at AMF Carter Lanes. These are not good numbers and hopes for more info next week.

Hall of Famer Nancy Chapman

Dies at Age 80ARLINGTON, Texas – Nancy

Chapman, a member of the United States Bowling Congress Hall of Fame, passed away Wednesday, April 28, at the age of 80.

The Oneida, Wis., native was inducted into the Women’s Inter-national Bowling Congress (now USBC) Hall of Fame for meritori-ous service in 2002.

Chapman was appointed a WIBC director by former presi-dent Alberta E. Crowe in 1974, an appointment she said “knocked her socks off.” She would serve on the WIBC board for 25 years, including positions as 5th,6th and 7th vice president and also as ser-geant-at-arms. She was a WIBC Member Emerita.

Chapman, who worked at Wisconsin Bell for 30 years, also loved to write about the sport. She won her first writing award for a column in 1964. She founded the Wisconsin Women Bowling Writ-ers in 1975, and served as editor of the Wisconsin Women’s Bowl-ing Association state publication, Bowling Action.

She was active with the Na-tional Women Bowling Writers (NWBW) and served as president from 2004-06. She earned the Mary Janetto Award (outstanding promotion of local bowling) and the Jo Ettien Lieber Award (dis-tinguished service to the game of American tenpins) from the NWBW.

She also served on the Bowl-ing Writers Association of Amer-ica board.

Before her induction into the WIBC Hall of Fame, Chapman, who promoted entries for the WIBC Championships for many years, recalled the time in 1983 when her efforts led to nearly 500 northern Wisconsin bowlers de-ciding to head to Las Vegas for the tournament. The large response re-quired that a Boeing 747 be char-tered for the group and the turnout attracted media attention because a plane that size had never flown into Green Bay.

Chapman is a member of the Green Bay Women’s Bowling Association and Wisconsin WBA Halls of Fame.

JAT Farm Clubby David Gordon

PASADENA—Reminder: This coming Sunday (5/16) will be the JAT Farm Club In-vitational tournament. Only the top 20 bowlers in JAT points will be allowed for this tournament. The entire field of 20 have confirmed (except one) and two alternates have already been contacted to fill in.

The bowling center for this highly sought after event will be AMF Carter Lanes in Ful-lerton. The cost for the small field is $45 and check-in be-gins at 8:30. The format will be 10 games of match play (random draw) followed by a top 5 TV style roll-off for the finals. Our dress code (with name on back of shirt) will be enforced. No JAT points will be awarded, but it is the last chance on the 2009-10 season to earn that title and be able to bowl three weeks later.

Please note, our 20 bowlers will be doubled up and bowl-ing on just 10 lanes. Please prepare yourselves accord-ingly. Get in your practice and plenty of rest. I’ll see you in Fullerton.

JUNIORSThe love of bowling can start at any age. As a boy I would do

whatever chores I could to gather enough money for a few games at Rivera Lanes. Our junors love the game and you can tell by their scores. If you have a child or are one, don’t miss out and join our Summer Junior Leagues now forming, 818-769-7600.

Sorry, no Junior scores were received at the Bowling News this week.

SENIORSYou’re never too young or too old to bowl in a league! Many of

our seniors attribute their youthful looks and prowess on the weekly exercise they get on our lanes. And as they say, practice makes perfect as these scores can attest too! Oh and if you’re looking for some fun or the fountain of youth, look no further and join one of our senior leagues now forming, 818-769-7600.

Bowler of the Week: This week’s bowler is an excitable fellow who often bowls great games. He can multitask by watching the Lakers win and bowling strikes. This week Jordan Omley bowled a 203 game for a 587 series during Music and Lyrics. Great job.

Sweetness Quote of the Week: “867 5309/Jenny” is a song written by Alex Call and Jim Keller and performed by Tommy Tutone that was released on the album Tommy Tutone 2, on the COLUM-BIA RECORDS label. The song caused a fad of people dialing 867 5309 and asking for “Jenny”. But don’t forget to call 769-7600, Pinz we will answer.
