Method of printing continuous tone images/photographs by varying the size or placement of dots on the media

– Through a screening process, the shades of gray of the image are converted into a series of dots

– At a distance, the eye/brain integrates the halftone dots giving the appearance of a continuous tone

Halftone quality depends on

– Resolution (600x600 dpi, 1200x1200 dpi, 1200x600 dpi, etc.)

– Line screen frequency (lines per inch [LPI])

– Bit depth – Binary vs multilevel (bits per pixel)

– Screening – Clustered Dot (AM screening) vs Dispersed Dot (FM Screening)

– Spot function – Line vs round vs square, etc.

– Color geometry – Rotated vs Dot on Dot

– Marking engine characteristics – Jitter, uniformity

– Intended application – Text, graphics, images

22

Printer resolution is measured in dots per inch (DPI), or the number of printer dots in a linear inch

A number of printer dots makes up a halftone dot

The number of halftone dots per linear inch is the lines per inch (LPI) of the printer or the distance from the center of one halftone dot to the center of the adjacent dot

LPI = 10

1 printer dot

Example of 2 halftone dots

23

Traditional Halftone cells need 16 pixels to ‘mix’ one color

A Contone cell intensity can be controlled individually

PhotoART Screening:Great color detail

PhotoART Screening:Smooth gradients

PhotoART Contone Technology - Overview

Contone printers use a combination of dithering and dot size control to produce a full range of colors that can be perceived by the human eye.

PhotoART 9600 x 600 dpi = Contone

Contone halftone: 4 bits per pixel; 16 levels per pixel

PhotoArt screening produces 4096 colors per dot

– Beautiful colors

– Photographic detail

– Smooth blends

Page 24: May 2008 magicolor 7450. 2 Large Format Tandem Color Laser 24.5 ppm color and B&W 9600 x 600 dpi-class 768 MB DDR SDRAM std. / 1024 MB max. 40 GB HDD

24

While binary halftones are 1 bit per pixel, multilevel halftones (aka contone) can have more than 1 bit per pixel

– Photo ART is 4 bits per pixel for near photo quality

Still need to dither with contone– Dithering is the process of placing the individual dots of the digital image in such

a way so the image appears to be continuous-tone

Advantages over binary halftones– More gray levels

– Much less visible patterns in the halftone

Highlights and midtones especially have less visible patterns

– Can have higher screen frequency

The higher the LPI, the sharper the image

However, higher LPI’s could show defects in the image (bands, patterns, etc)

– Less dot gain

Smaller, finer dot

– Smoother fills

Halftoning – Binary vs Multilevel Halftones

Page 25: May 2008 magicolor 7450. 2 Large Format Tandem Color Laser 24.5 ppm color and B&W 9600 x 600 dpi-class 768 MB DDR SDRAM std. / 1024 MB max. 40 GB HDD

25

While a binary dot can only be white or black, a 4 bit per pixel contone dot is subdivided into 16 subpixels

Therefore, the horizontal resolution for contone is calculated by multiplying the engine resolution (600dpi) times 16 to equal 9600dpi

The vertical resolution is equal to the engine resolution (600dpi)

1 binary dot 1 contone dot

600 dpi

600 x 16 = 9600 dpi

Halftoning – 9600 x 600 dpi Contone

Page 26: May 2008 magicolor 7450. 2 Large Format Tandem Color Laser 24.5 ppm color and B&W 9600 x 600 dpi-class 768 MB DDR SDRAM std. / 1024 MB max. 40 GB HDD

26

Contone has more gray levels– Gray levels is the number of shades of gray that can be reproduced

– # gray levels per pixel = 2 bits per pixel

– # gray levels per halftone dot = (dpi horizotal / lpi) x (dpi vertical / lpi) + 1

Binary1 bit per pixel21 = 2 gray levels per pixel

Multilevel (Contone) 4 bits per pixel24 = 16 gray levels per pixel

(4/1) x (4/1) + 116 gray levels per halftone dot(plus white)

16 gray levels

LPI = 1

(64/1) x (4/1) + 1256 gray levelsper halftone dot(plus white)

256 gray levels

4 x 16 = 64 dpi

27

Contone has less noise, a less discernible pattern– Dot position control

Can place 15 different dot widths within the pixel or the dot can be centered

1 bit per pixel 4 bits per pixel

Halftoning – Binary vs Multilevel Halftones

Page 28: May 2008 magicolor 7450. 2 Large Format Tandem Color Laser 24.5 ppm color and B&W 9600 x 600 dpi-class 768 MB DDR SDRAM std. / 1024 MB max. 40 GB HDD

28

KONICA MINOLTA printers have fixed halftones embedded in the printer’s system code

– The user can not download a custom halftone to the printer

– Because there are currently no tools available for users to create custom multi-level halftones, the embedded halftones are better quality than anything a user would be able to create

– KONICA MINOLTA’s embedded halftones are higher quality as they are created with expert tools to take advantage of maximum quality capabilities of the print engine

The advantage of KONICA MINOLTA’s fixed halftone over variable halftones such as those in AdobePS controllers includes

– AdobePS only supports binary halftones

Embedded Halftones help insure color accuracy by eliminating the gamma shift associated with changing LPI settings.

35

Color hardware is “device-dependent”– Each device has its own unique way of

representing color

Scanners, monitors, and printers all

behave differently (RGB vs CMYK)

– Two devices will rarely reproduce the same color in exactly the same way

Due to the color management system

employed

– Different devices, even different brands of a device, may have different color gamuts

Color Gamut is the range of colors that

can be produced by a given device Typical monitor’s gamut

Typical printer’s gamut

Visible Light Spectrum

Color Matching – Why it’s needed?

Page 36: May 2008 magicolor 7450. 2 Large Format Tandem Color Laser 24.5 ppm color and B&W 9600 x 600 dpi-class 768 MB DDR SDRAM std. / 1024 MB max. 40 GB HDD

36

PostScript Level 1 Color Model

C = 1 – R

M = 1 – G

Y = 1 – B

K = min (C,M,Y)

C’ = C – K

M’ = M – K

Y’ = Y – K

Black Generation (BG) calculates the amount of black to be used when trying to reproduce a particular color.

Under Color Removal (UCR) reduces the amount of C, M, & Y components to compensate for the amount of black that was added by the black generation.

Color Matching – Complement Color

Page 37: May 2008 magicolor 7450. 2 Large Format Tandem Color Laser 24.5 ppm color and B&W 9600 x 600 dpi-class 768 MB DDR SDRAM std. / 1024 MB max. 40 GB HDD

37

The PANTONE® Matching System (PMS) consists of a table of formulas (C+M+Y+K) for emulating 942 solid spot colors in the PMS

Palettes are loaded into applications or the formulas are specified within documents

– Must select colors in CMYK color space

PANTONE Tables are product specific

Printing with PANTONE Colors is device dependent

Once a printer-specific PANTONE Color is specified, that application file is now device specific

Only for spot colors, not for images

Color Matching – Spot Color Simulation - Pantone

Page 38: May 2008 magicolor 7450. 2 Large Format Tandem Color Laser 24.5 ppm color and B&W 9600 x 600 dpi-class 768 MB DDR SDRAM std. / 1024 MB max. 40 GB HDD

38

Instead of providing application-specific PANTONE Tables, different manufacturers (such as EFI) have PANTONE Spot Color recognition built into the printer firmware

In-printer spot color processing advantage:– Better able to support different output conditions (changes in media, halftones, etc)

Spot color simulation is done via a mathematical calculation in the color matching

system; adjustments for changing conditions are quickly calculated on the fly

Application-specific PANTONE Tables advantages:– Better accuracy

Application-specific PANTONE Tables are created via a visual adjustment so the

output results in a better visual match than mathematical computation alone

Application PANTONE Tables vs In-Printer Spot Color Recognition

It is desirable to specify a color without referring to a particular device.

To do this we need to:

– Represent a color in an unambiguous or device-independent way.

– Use a neutral color language or specification by which all color information is referenced.

– Have a translator to convert device-dependent color to device-independent color (and back again)

CIE L*a*b* is a perceptually linear, device independent color space used to convert between 2 device-dependent color spaces

Color Matching – Device Independent Color

Page 41: May 2008 magicolor 7450. 2 Large Format Tandem Color Laser 24.5 ppm color and B&W 9600 x 600 dpi-class 768 MB DDR SDRAM std. / 1024 MB max. 40 GB HDD

41

The most accurate method of color matching is a color management system (CMS).

– Compares the source gamut with the gamut of the device on which the color will be printed

– Makes any adjustments necessary to represent the color consistently among devices

42

The math module

CMM uses ICC profiles to convert one device-dependent color space into the Profile Connection Space (PCS) and then to a second device-dependent color space

43

An ICC profile is a characterization, or description, of the color properties of a device in a particular state

– different resolutions, screening, and media

Profiling a device simply describes its color capabilities but does not alter its behavior.

Device Profiles are divided into three classifications

– Input profiles for devices such as

scanners and digital cameras

– Output profiles for devices such as

printers, film recorders, presses

– Display profiles

Gamut mapping information is stored within the profile– Gamut mapping information specifies how out-of-gamut colors should be adjusted to

bring them in gamut

Photographic (Perceptual)– The default for printing photographs.

– In order to reproduce the most realistic color for a photo, whenever colors fall outside the printer’s gamut, all colors within the photo will be adjusted (shifted) in order to maintain the relationship between tones.

Vivid (Saturation)– The default for printing graphics, text and spot color within a page

– Adjusts the out-of-gamut colors to the most saturated color possible.

Colorimetric– Used to print colors exactly unless they are out of gamut.

– Only colors that are out of range will be adjusted and they will be shifted to the nearest reproducible color by tone and shade.

– Relative

For printing exact colors relative to a particular white point.

– Absolute Color

For printing colors exactly without reference to a white point.

Custom source, simulation or destination profiles can be downloaded to the printer and selected in the driver for a customized workflow

– Custom profiles can be obtained from the source or simulation device manufacturer, or created by expert users using third-party software such as XRite EZcolor

– Download Manager software allows expert users to download custom profiles to the printer

– Driver can be configured to use custom profiles

A standard that allows for the printing of images from a PictBridge-compliant digital camera directly to a PictBridge-compliant printer without the use of a computer

– The two devices are connected directly to each other with a USB cable

– Print settings are set via the display on the digital camera

Default print settings for the printer will be used if certain settings (such as media type, size, and print quality) cannot be selected via the camera

Print settings/functions available depend on the individual device specifications

– The print job is sent directly from the digital camera to the printer

Image data is sent to the printer in the digital camera’s inherent format, typically JPG

The image typically contains an embedded ICC profile (usually sRGB) which is then used by the printer as the source profile for color matching
