Home in St. Bavo Cathedral in Ghent the Adoration of

the Mystic Lamb, also known as the Ghent altarpiece

is considered to be one of the artistic masterpieces in

Belgium. It also is considered one of the mostinfluential and beautiful painting of the Middle-Ages

and the Flemish painting school. The work was begun

by Hubert van Eyck, who died in 1426 whilst workwas underway, and completed by his younger brother

Jan van Eyck. The altarpiece represented a "new

conception of art", in which the idealization of themedieval tradition gave way to an exacting

    observation of nature.

When I was asked to write this section of the Tymberhavenenewsletter I was very excited. I started thinking about all the

things I can write about and what I should do for my firstarticle. As I thought more about it I think with this first

article I will tell you about the local fighters and my goals

with what I will be writing about.

Our local fighters are a group of great individuals. I sayindividuals because we all have different ideas and fighting

preferences and styles. Some you are unfamiliar with them

unless you have been to practices and seen them fight. I cantell you that with our fighters there is no shortage of practicefor techniques. From sword and shield to offhand axe to dualsword to mace to madu to two handed weapons we all are

thinking along different lines a lot of times. This is not a bad

thing. We all have a chance to practice different styles and

see what we feel we can be the best at and also what we think

is the most fun to do. Also what we may need to work on

with our own goals within the SCA. Our personas range from

Differing centuries to even undecided. Our armor and

weapons span thousands of years at times. Is that bad? Not at

all. Most of the fighters here in Tymberhavene are on the

green side and its a great thing to have some out there evenwith the large mix of cultures and armors the may span

across helm to knee protection. We can even boast that we

have a female fighter in our ranks and that is something that

can be quite rare indeed and possible that there are more to

come. Almost all of us greener fighters have neverparticipated in a war so with the upcoming War of trees we

look forward to learning from the experienced fighters some

tips on what we can expect and some tactics to help not only

Tymberhavene but The Summits and ultimately An Tir

become the best Kingdom of all.

My goals with this article section in the futureincludebringing forth information about events and how the fightersare doing. Tips on things like strikesand weapons.Howsome weapons and armor came about during their use inhistory and general info on what the plans are for the fightersof Tymberhavene. I can tell you that in the next article ofThe Tymberhavene Eric we will talk about the Pizza

platter...If youre notsure what that is grab up a fighter andask him We all should be familiar with this.

    Yours in Service

Arts & sciencesGreetings Shire of Tymberhavene! I, Julianna, would

like to welcome you to the Arts and Sciences section of

    our newsletter!

I am so excited to see people having fun with learning

new things, both at the Wednesday A&S nights and atthe Bandon gatherings. Among other projects, I have

enjoyed spreading my love of the fiber arts to our shire.

A couple people have learned to spin both with a wheel

and a drop spindle and we had fun one night learninghow to dye and card wool. At the April Bandon

gathering Mehitabel taught us how to make chair covers. It's a great project for those (like me) that are new to

sewing. Several people have expressed interest in inkle

loom weaving, so I see an inkle demonstration

    opportunity in the near future.

I'm sure some of you are very excited to hear that ournew Shire member Anne Maire Armour is busy putting a

bardic group together. We welcome anyone interested insinging or playing an instrument, beginner or advanced,

to join us in our music making. Practices will be

announced when we get things organized and you are

welcome to bring your instruments and ideas to the

Wednesday arts and sciences nights. Anne is hoping tohave both a north and south bardic group since it is

difficult for us to find the time and gas to travel so far on

a regular basis. If you are interested in helping toorganize the southern half of the bardic group please

contact either me or Anne.At our upcoming Shire event, War of Trees, June 8th-

10th, there will be a few A&S classesoffered. Seamuswill be teaching a persona class for those who are

interested in developing theirpersona, and also aclass

called Turning Your Kitchen into an Apothecary

where you can learn how things that are commonly

found in your kitchen today were used in the Middle

Ages. Mehitabel has kindly offered to teach her chair

cover class, which is wonderful for those interested intrying to maintain a more period looking encampment.

For those who are excited about the fiber arts, I will beoffering a beginners class on how to use a drop spindle.

We will have drop spindles and wool available for use

during the class. In addition to the classes at War of Trees we will also

have an Arts and Sciences Championship. For those

interested in entering, the rules are three entries, onefrom a different category, one with documentation

(although it is fun to see documentation on all three

entries) If you have questions about the A&SChampionship, please contact Seamus or myself.

Largesse donations are still needed for War of Trees,

so if you have something that you would like to gift our

visiting royalty with, please contact me and my husband

    Gussan.

It is my goal for future articles in the Shire newsletter

to include informational sections on different A&S

subjects so if there is something that you would like to

learn or if you would like to see a demonstration of

something at a gathering, please ask about it by either e-

mailing, calling me or posting on the Tymberhavene

Facebook or Yahoo list. If I can't teach you what you'reinterested in we can work on finding someone who can.

If all else fails, we can learn it together!Yours in service,

    Lady Julianna (Hilary Dinsmore)

    Camp Chair Cover

    Persona Development

    ~Improving Your Encampment~

~Coleman lanterns put off a harsh white light. To

improve your encampment use hurricane lamps to light

your space. It is nice for those camped around you, and

while they really are not period they are better than the

fake looking light from a lantern.

~Cover modern camp chairs. If you can't have period

looking chairs and there are lots of reason you might not,

money, space in the car or you physically need a modern

chair, thats fine! Just cover them with period looking

fabric! Mehitabel happens to be teaching a class at Warof the Trees, come learn!

~ Cover your cooler. While we all love keep our food in

the green zone and not getting food poisoning, covering

up the modern plastic coolers will make yourencampment look tons better. Even just throwing a

    blanket over it will do!

    ~Open Offices~

    Gold Key (loaner garb)

    Family Activities Coordinator (youth activities)

    Chirurgeon (medic)

Also in June Exchequer and Knight Marshal will open.

We all have started a persona, yet many of us stop at a

name. We have figured out who we want to be called,

but not who we really are. I think its very important that

you not only create a story about your persona's life, butlearn what you persona would have known. I hope to

each issue to get our readers to think about a topic, and

decide how their persona would feel about that, or what

they would know about the topic. We want to be part ofanother time, let's try to really know that time.

I am going to assume that you all know your country of

origin. Most of us have picked a name based off of a

time and place. One thing I believe every persona wouldknow is who was the ruler of their county, and the rulers

of the kingdoms around their homeland. We know who

our President is right? Well our persona would knowwho their King and Queen was, and even the Monarchs

    our country had dealings with.

Take just a little bit of time and research who the King

of England was in the 1530's and his Wife (Henry VIII

and depending on the exact year there are a few options

for a wife!), that is if you are English. If you want totake it a step farther, who was the King of France, Spain,

and Portugal? Even find out who the Pope was, as most

people were Catholic they would know. Even if youwere a reformer you would know who you wished tooverthrow.

Just a little research will help you get one step closer to

being your persona. Its never going to end, we all will

have more to learn and ways to develop our persona, but

this issue we are one step closer. Besides it wouldn't be

fun anymore if we stopped growing and expanding our

    knowledge.
