On April 14th, Legacy eighth grader, Macey Crowder, auditioned for one of

the world’s top singing competitions, The X Factor television show. She and her dad traveled to New Orleans, LA, for the uadi-tion. She didn’t make it to the next round, but had a great time.

Macey said, “I was really nervous, but excited at the same time.”

Mr. Crowder said, “We are ex-tremely proud that she had the confidence to tryout and the initiative to gather all materials she needed. We know she did her best and whether she moved on or not, God is writing her story!”

When Macey was at the tryouts, she no-ticed that it was a little Unorganized. Over-all, she had a great experience auditioning, even though she didn’t make it.

“I might try out again in a couple years, when I am more experienced.”

As anyone who has heard her sing in the praise band or doing the National An-them at Lions games already knows, she is very talented. Way to go, Macey! PFT

Lions Excel at State Meet p.8

On Thursday, April 18, Mr. Huckaby’s seventh grade history class went on a field trip to

Galveston to visit the San Jacinto Monument.The purpose for the field trip was to let the students

see in person exactly what they’ve been learning about in class.

“I’m hoping that, by having the students actually witness an area we talked about, it will have a more substantive impact on them,” says Mr. Huckaby.

They got a tour of the Battleship Texas, and even learned the history of the ship. They then took a hike along the San Jacinto Battleground. There, they saw the exact location of where Texas won its independence.

Sarah Havemann says,”I learned a lot and it was a lot of fun to go to.”

“It was a fun experience,” says Brennan Cone. Jared May says, “It was a very exciting experience

to know about a 100-year-old battleship and the big San Jacinto monument.” PFT

Boy, when the Lord told me our verse and theme for this year included having a

“steadfast spirit,” I should’ve known something interesting was coming our way. The growth of our school has made it necessary for us to find a place that can house those interested in being part of the University Model, and spe-cifically, Legacy. Unfortunately, there simply are no other places/churches that can house so many of us... and that’s a good thing!

So, when it became obvious to our board and leadership teams almost two years ago that we would need a place of our own, the search was on for land that could accom-modate our ever-expanding numbers. I will confess to you that, because that process was so labor-intensive, I really thought the worst was over and we had persevered.

But then the school year began and we entered the process of drawing up the plans for the new facility, agreeing on a design we could afford, meeting the needs of incoming students, plotting the building effectively on the land, environmental surveys, banking, utili-ties, and hundreds of other tasks. We began to see the reason behind the verse God gave us. We have jumped through hoop after hoop to bring this process to a close so we can begin building on the land.

We are still working toward that end.This has been a long and arduous adven-

ture, and it’s still not over. But, as I threw my spiritual hissy fit this week and complained to God about how unfair all of this had been, I began to smell something rotten: my attitude!

The attitude with which we approach a problem, if it is good, helps maintain hope in “the plan,” even when current events seem to be turning against it. I know God has a plan and was reminded that we entered that plan faithfully and in a prayerful way.

But because things haven’t been easy, my focus turned inward and my attitude spiraled downward. During some recent quiet time, I came across words that I felt were writ-ten specifically for me. I found comfort and encouragement from them, and I hope you will, too.

Charles Swindoll writes, “The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on

life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home (and a school). The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace that day. We cannot change our past. We cannot change the inevi-table. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our attitudes!”

After reading this excerpt, I couldn’t overlook how closely those words and God’s scripture are connected.

“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me,” Psalm 51:10. Surely you can see how our attitudes and the renewing of our spirit are so closely related! God needs us to approach each trial with a steadfast spirit, or, positive attitude, no matter what the situation. And, both of those are choices that we make. When we no longer feel steadfast, or positive, we must seek a renewal of our spirit so that we are able to continue in our current circumstances. And, we must give thanks in each situation for the things that God continues to teach us and show us as our faithful Father.

As a board and leadership team, we covet your prayers for a renewing of our steadfast spirit and positive attitude. We are grateful to be co-laborers with you, especially during these uncertain times, and to have the privi-lege of bringing the desires of our hearts to the foot of the cross.

Thank you for your prayers and support over the last few months. Please continue to lift up the final details of our land and facility and pray for God’s will to be revealed to us as we move forward. We anticipate being able to share the blessings He has given us very soon. PFT

Attitude is Everything

On April 16, Legacy had its annual Race For Education (RFE). Held every year during the week of SATs, RFE’s purpose is to help raise

money for the school, along with providing a fun day for the school with games, races, and lunch.

RFE once again took place at Burroughs Park in Tomball. It is the per-fect setting for us to be able to offer races of different distances as well as our Field Day Games. There is plenty of space at Burroughs, which our growing school needs!

“What a great day for RFE,” said Mrs. May. “A special thanks to Megan Peters, Heather Elsik, and Michelle Kuykendall. What a great job they did organizing and carrying out one of our most important fund-raisers of the year.”

This year Legacy offered a one-mile race, and a 5K race. For the one-mile race, Kyle Maiz took first place, Jackson Phillips finished second, and Jeremy Hecht finished in third place. For the 5K, Joshua Micheletti took first place, Brooks Hutton finished in second place, and Brennan Cone finished in third place.

“We also thank all of the dads who came,” said Mrs. May. “Whether you cooked, ran, or just cheered, it’s always great when you take time away from your work schedule and get to be a part of any Legacy event. And last, thanks to everyone who contributed in some way, through the giving of their time, talents, and treasure. You made it super special!”

Luke’s Locker came to offer race and timing support. A group of Legacy dads provided an awesome BBQ lunch, and many of our teach-ers and parents helped provide fun field day games for the lower school students.

TGA Golf offered a putt-putt challenge as one of our many games. We also had a fun obstacle course for the upper school students pro-vided by Gold’s Gym. This year Legacy came very close to its goal of $40,000. Well done, Lions. PFT

Lions Shine at ASCI Art Festival

Legacy artists from third through twelfth grade recently went to Belleville to show off their amazing art skills in the ASCI Art Festival. Out of the other 16 schools in the ASCI Art Com-

petition, and the 29 prices of artwork we took, we brought home 11 medals. Every student got a superior, excellent, or good ribbon.

Faith Academy of Belleville hosted the event and the students were able to do fun-filled activi-ties. “Legacy participated to provide recognition to young talented artists of our school,” said Legacy art teacher, Mrs. Kay Ivy

At the Art Festival, four professional artists came: A Madison Graham, Neysa Smaistrla (painting), Ross Bradfield (sketching ), and Annette Smith (muralist). Each student received a clas-sification ribbon for their art piece from the judges in the competition. In addition, the top scorers from each category received gold, silver, or bronze medals. On April 24, Legacy had its third annual athletic banquet at Amber Springs. All athletes from different sports were presented an award. Outstanding athletes were honored with personal

awards, such as Lion’s Heart, MVP, Most Improved, Offensive Player, Defensive Player, and of course All-District.

Dinner and dessert was served to Lions families, along with a candy bar filled with Legacy colored candy. Everyone could take many pictures in a photo booth. Each sport’s coaches brought up their players and talked about their great season. In honor of their back-to-back undefeated seasons, the Junior High football team, danced the Harlem shake and presented it at the banquet. PFT

Lions Honored at Athletic Banquet

Looking for a fun, amazing camp to do this summer? Legacy Prep’s Hutton Family is host-ing a Real Life Real Music summer camp that would be perfect for you. The camps last five

days, with a showcase the Sunday night following the camp. There will be four sessions:• Session 1 - June 24-28, with a showcase on June 30th,• Session 2 - July 8-12, showcase July 14th,• Session 3 - July 22-26, showcase July 28th• Session 4 - August 5-9, showcase August 11th.“The first two days we spend at Dosey Doe on I-45 writing with professional songwriters,”

says Tara Hutton. “The next two days we spend in a studio, recording the songs we’ve written. Each student makes a demo. On Friday we go back to Dosey Doe and rehearse our songs on the Dosey Doe stage. Then on the Sunday following the camp we do a student showcase at Dosey Doe. It is so much fun!”

She says they even have people who just come for the showcase because it’s such a cool show, even though they might not know students participating in it. “That really means a lot to me,” said Mrs. Hutton.

The camp is $500 for Legacy students. They also offer a scholarship on their website, real-liferealmusic.com. The Huttons have three kids, two of which (Brooks and Cason) go to Legacy.

“My favorite part of the songwriter camps is the opportunity to do what I love, and be with people that are fun, and very experienced in music. You also get to hang out with your camp mates in an awesome restauraunt! The camps are so fun and provide an amazing musical experience,” said ninth grader, Brooks Hutton.

the Chapel for Elementary Students. “It was a privilege to hear the 5th grade students share their testimonies with our PK - 4th

grade students during April’s chapel time,” said Mrs. Laycock. “Each one expressed how God has worked in their life and what a relationship with Him means to them. What a great ex-ample this was to our elementary school students! Sharing Christ was the best display of lead-ership that our middle school students could offer to them. I am confident that these students will continue to shine Jesus’ light as they share their personal stories with others.” PFT

Varsity Track

Legacy’s varsity track team sent 15 athletes to Alvin for the district meet two weeks

ago. The top four finishers in each event there qualified for the state meet at Baylor this past weekend. The Lions did Legacy proud with the following results at the state meet:

Ben Bargainer placed 3rd in the 110 hurdles.Matt Wenstrom placed 4th in the pole vault.Maddie Crowder ran the 800 meters in 3:05, a

personal record (PR). Maddie placed 6th.Brooks Hutton ran the 3,200 meters (2 miles)

in 12:57. This was also a PR. Brooks placed 8th.Garrett DeClaris placed 8th in the 110

hurdles.The girls 4x400 relay team (Brooklyn

Fredricks, Sarah Cruthirds, Maddie Crowder, and Amber Condley) placed 7th and beat the 8th place team by .01 seconds. Their time was 5:12:01.

A great story from the previous district meet was Garrett DeClaris giving up his spot on the 4x400 relay. Travis May didn’t qualify for state after his last individual race. Garrett had already qualified for state in the hurdles. So Garrett offered his relay spot to Travis so that Travis could have one more chance to qualify. Unfortunately they came up a couple of inches short.

It was a great season. Our athletes did a wonderful job pushing to do their very best. They represented the Lions well! PFT

Track Team Shines at State Meet


Baseball

I wanted to give you some specific instructions regarding how the patches and “letters”

are to be attached to your jackets. Because we did not have a letter, like the letter “L” placed on the front of our letterman jackets, we will not be able to attach your “letter” (the tiny patches you received at the Athletic Banquet in the shape of a football, basketball, shoe, or other shape that may have resembled a sport) to a letter on the jacket. Instead, your “letter patch” will be sewn on the front of your jacket,a under and to the side of the Legacy Logo. I have attached a picture of this to the bot-tom of the email. The district awards you may have received will go on the sleeves of the jacket. If you ordered a number with a symbol on it (for instance Travis ordered the number 24 with a football in the middle of it), the district patches will go on the sleeve directly under that patch. If you did not order a number, the district patches go on

the sleeve on the opposite side of the Lion Head logo or gradua-tion year, if you do not have a Lion’s Head. I have also attached a picture of this to the bottom of the email.

Many of you participate in several sports, so your jackets will most likely become covered with awards and district patches. The sleeves should be covered first, then you’d move to the back of your jacket, and eventually, to the front, op-posite of your Legacy Logo.

In the coming years, in-stead of the small letterman patches, you will receive a bar which will indicate the number of years you have lettered in that particular sport. Those bars will either be placed over the letter patch, to the side, or under, so be sure to leave a little space between or under those as you have them sewn on. We will give you information regarding how to place those bars on your

jacket next year. Let us know if you have any questions, and congratulations

Play ball! Legacy had its first baseball interest meeting this year on May 1, 2013. The turnout was more than expected.

There was about 20 boys that showed up and had great interest. The team will be made of 7th-12th grade boys, and the team will have 10-12 boys total.

This will be Legacy’s sixth sport if it is added in the fall like the coaches (and players) are hoping. The interest for baseball has always been apparent among Legacy students, but this is the first year that we have had the players to field a team.

The possible coaches for our baseball team so far are Brandon May and Brent Shook. Mr. May has coached many baseball teams throughout the years for his sons, and Mr. Shook played college baseball and has a passion for the game.

Legacy is excited to have the possibility to add another wonderful team to its stock of wonderful student athletes and hopes they can flourish and play for the glory of God. PFT

A group of Legacy students performed the school’s first-ever musical production, Acorns to Oaks, at Woodlands Place Baptist Church on May 10 at 6:30 pm.

“PK and K opened the show with two songs. Then, 1st and 2nd graders and middle school choir took the stage for an evening of song, dance, and drama,” said Legacy Fine Arts Director Becky Cone, who directed the musical.

The musical shared the “Parable of the Sower” in a creative and humorous way. It told the story of a farmer, Mr. MacDonald, who uses his harvest to teach the work crew the parable of the sower. When they are visited by some mischievous crows and rumor weeds, they begin to understand that the best way to produce the fruit God desires in their lives is to plant their roots firmly in God’s word.

“After looking through a lot of possibilities, this musical spoke to me the most and celebrates all that our students at Legacy have been learning through the year about planted, rooted, and growing in Christ” said Mrs. Cone.

Mrs. Cone is so proud of each of her music students, but especially the MS choir students who auditioned for the acting and solo parts for the show.

Following the musical, a cookie reception provided an opportunity for families to share in the harvest by giving to a variety of ministries in lieu of admission tickets. Hundreds of dollars and dozens of canned goods and Bibles were collected to be shared with those in need around the globe! One of the highlights of the evening was Mrs. May sharing that Legacy’s construction loan closed that day and we break ground next week on our new building! God is good! PFT

On With The Show!

It’s been seven years since we’ve seen a new album from Justin Timberlake. JT used those seven years to reinvent himself into basically a new artist. Timberlake’s new album, The 20/20 Experi-

ence, appeared March 19, 2013. Though it is categorized in the “Pop” genre, it also happens to be one of “Pop’s” weirdest albums. The reason is that some songs will be set in a R&B style and some songs will be set in what I like to call a Big Band style.

On the album there is maybe one true pop song. In addition to having many different styles on the album, most songs run past seven minutes. Occasionally towards the middle of the songs, the genre will almost completely change. Some songs I would strongly recommend are “Suit & Tie (featuring Jay Z)”, “That Girl”, “Let the Groove Get In”, and “Mirrors.”

Although all the songs on The 20/20 Experience are very good, there are songs that I would recommend avoiding for younger kids, such as “Pusher Love Girl”, “Don’t Hold the Wall”, and “Spaceship Coupe.” “Suit & Tie” is also a bit inappropriate for younger ages, but is a very good song. The reasons for avoiding these songs are that they have some sexual and drug references, and also have some suggestive words.

For family friendliness I give The 20/20 Experience 3.5 stars out of 5. As an overall good album, I give it 4.5 stars out of 5. PFT

After the legacy musical, there was a reception in the gym featuring ministries that were supported through chapel, leadership, Rebelution, and National Honor society this year. These girls started their own ministry called “love to Africa” as a result of what they learned in chapel. They held a drawing for a cake they made shaped like Africa. emily slater won the cake. They had other items for sale as well. These little ladies embodied God’s word and made the legacy family proud!

Timberlake Album Spans Genres

found out. They recently did an experi-ment that showed that the food we eat isn’t always what we think.

What follows are reports from the experiments some of the students did to see how long fast food actually lasts. The results will shock you! PFT

The Alman Family discovered Legacy by stopping by their neighbor’s house one day because they saw a car with a Legacy sticker on it. “It

was definitely God’s Timing,” says Mrs. Alman. Her daughters, Eliza and Isabelle and Eliza, are in kindergarten and first grade, respectively.

Being here at Legacy has brought the Alman family closer to Christ in many ways. “I love that Legacy gives me the tools to help encourage my kids in Christ’s way,” says Mrs. Alman. Sometimes as a mom I don’t know where to begin on my own! I have begun to realize this semester that Legacy has forced my daughters and I to work a little harder at learning how to commu-nicate with each other.”

Mrs. Alman and her family love Legacy because it has shown them that their children have grown in confidence and maturity this year.

As you know, every year God gives us a scripture which we hold as our theme throughout the school

year. This year our theme was New Beginnings, and we used Psalm 51:10, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me,” to remind us that we must wait on the Lord to fulfill his plans. Well, Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say Rejoice! The loan has finally been signed and funded and we will now begin the building process of our new facility within the week!

On behalf of our board, the Advancement Team, and those who have guaranteed this loan, it is our privilege to tell you the good things the Lord has done, and to thank you for your patience, prayers, talents and treasure as we move forward to provide a facility for our ever-increasing numbers. God has blessed us with so much and we want to give Him all the Glory!

In the coming weeks, we will send out updates on the progress of the building. We have more exciting things to announce as we begin construction. In the meantime, please continue to pray for good weather, few interruptions or hiccups, safety for those working on the land, and wisdom for our decision makers. And, most im-portantly, give thanks to our Provider for all he has done.

Last, as we close out this school year and move into next year, we are already listening for what God would have us do. And, he is speaking. This year was so busy and very exhausting for many of us (and many of you!) God has given us Isaiah 40:31, “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, walk and not be faint.” We believe that God would have us rest in him and rely on His energy and His strength to finish what He began! This year, we’ve talked a lot about abiding in Christ. We’ve learned that an important part of abiding is resting in the Lord. In Isaiah 30:15, God says, “In repentance and rest you will be saved, in quietness and trust is your strength.” As we quiet ourselves before the Lord, read his Word, and pray it back to him, we learn that his blessings have been pursuing us all along. We just needed to stop and let them pour over us.

The focus of Elemen-tary Character Team is to grow Christ-like character in students who choose to partici-pate. Student Council’s Summer Outreach Opportunities

The Legacy Student Council is pleased to announce the first of several summer outreach opportunities for all High Schoolers, In-Coming High

Schoolers, and 7th graders (if accompanied by a parent). All parents are welcome!

For our first service project, we will be working with Montrose Street Reach, a weekly church gathering of homeless and low income families. Montrose Street Reach, also know as Street Church, is a place where families come to receive practical help, such as clothing, diapers, vitamins, and parenting services, as well as prayer and support. It serves homeless children in finding long-term foster and adoptive homes and helps the unemployed in finding work.

The Student Council will be organizing serving teams for this particular event such as a Care Package Team, a Childcare Team, kid’s Food Serving Team, Kids Care Package Team and Clothing Drive Team.

Interested students should contact your student council representative. It’s a great opportunity to start working on your High School service hours and bless others at the same time! Parents, contact Mary Gibson if you have any questions (936-718-1129). PFT

I am excited to tell you that Joann Manning will move into the po-sition of High School Academic Supervisor beginning this sum-

mer. As our upper school grows, it is apparent that we will need to have more eyes on our academics to ensure continued quality. Melissa Eickenhorst’s role will be split, giving each position dedi-cated oversight in each of their areas. We are thrilled to have Joann serve in a larger way on the Administrative team.

In addition, Michelle Kuykendall has accepted the role of Director of Marketing and has been serving in this position for several months. She has the task of reaching out into The Wood-lands communities and beyond, and sharing the Legacy story. We are so excited to have her on board!

Legacy is blessed to have such gifted teachers and administra-tors at our fabulous school! PFT

Hillsong United’s Great New AlbumReview by James Coggins

Hillsong United is a worship group that started back in 1983. I like their new album that came out February 26th of this year named

Zion. Each song is very powerful and meaningful to me. The first song is called “Relentless,” about God’s love never failing.

It also is about how every chain is broken and we are set free from God. This next song is called “Up In Arms.” This song is about how His word is final, and how God’s name is above all names.

“Scandal Of Grace” is about we do everything to know God, and to stay close by His side. “Oceans” is mainly about when we are down, or even if we aren’t down, how we just call upon His name and how we embrace our soul in Him. “Stay And Wait” is about how we lift up God’s name in the darkness and how we have our eyes on Him.

Another great song is “Mercy Mercy,” about how all we need is God, how we need to be right behind God’s footsteps and how we need Him to arrest our hearts and be right beside Him. “Love Is War” is about how we need to turn our eyes to see his face, and as all our fears sur-render, God holds our heart within this grace and where burden turns to wonder.

“Nothing Like Your Love” is about how God’s love is unchanging and how we are surrounded by His compassion and grace. The next song is called “Zion” and it just has really cool beats. “Heartbeats” is about how we can just throw our future into His hands.

Another cool song i like is called “A Million Suns.” It specifically sings about how God shines like a million suns ablaze wrapped in eternal light and praise. It is also about how He is the first and how He is our morning star. This next song is called “Tapestry.” It is about how God is the maker of earth and sky. Also, about how His word formed life and light. The last song is called “King Of Heaven.” It is about how our eyes are lifted up, our great eternal hope arises and His great design was drawn out for us.

I really hope everybody checks into Hillsong United and hope I encouraged you to go buy this amazing new album, Zion. I really hope this album will change your life and for it to make you want to be set on fire for the Most High. Hope you enjoy it. PFT

Legacy’s high school creative writing class, taught by Mr. Jones, has very busy this year. The students actually

wrote their very own novels. Writer Brenden Miller says, “The class is inspirational and

fun, it also helps you find your inner writer.” Mr. Jones tried his best to make his class fun and exiting,

but he still made the students work hard. The creative writing students sometimes take breaks from their strenuous work on their novels.

“Mr. Jones is really helping us get through this process. Every once in a while, we would take a break from our novel and do something fun,” says Ryan Gibson.

“As every one of them can tell you, an author doesn’t get to 20,000 words by fooling around,” says Mr. Jones.

“We plan on finishing our books and sharing them with each other, and eventually share them with people outside of our class. Some of us may actually try to get our books pub-lished,” says Ryan Gibson. PFT

Mr. Wenstrom’s Fifth-Grade Wax MuseumBy Bobby Cruthirds

Mrs. Wenstrom’s 5th grade class did a wax museum this month, and the turnout was astounding. Each child dressed up as a historical character

from America’s history that had an impact on society in some way. Harrison Shook was George Washington the first President of the United States, Reagan Mace was Emily Dickinson the famous poet, and Sam Bargainer was Daniel Boone the well-known frontiersman.

All of the kids had a tri-fold poster board with a hand-drawn picture of their character and many other interesting facts about their character’s life. Every kid had a speech they would give when someone would press the button at their area. Every kid’s speech was incredible, and each kid received many comple-ments about how hard they worked and how well they presented from students of all ages.

The wax museum had a huge turnout this year, and nobody was more proud of the 5th graders than Mrs. Wenstrom. Kids of all ages came to see the amazing work that the 5th graders had done. There were kindergarteners as well as 8th graders that came to enjoy the wax museum. “I remember when my 8th graders were doing wax museum three years ago, and coming to see this makes me realize how much the kids have grown,” said 8th grade English

teacher, and wax museum founder Mrs. Eickenhorst.One other important aspect of this project was that each student had to

research their characters biblical life. The students also wrote a research paper, a diary, and many of them had a timeline with the characters important achievements on it. “It’s been an enormous project, but it has been well worth the student’s time and effort,” said Mrs. Wenstrom.

Legacy is extremely proud of the 5th graders who did an excellent job on their wax museum, and Mrs. Wenstrom who did an amazing job coordinating everything and supporting the students throughout the process. PFT
