I speak Japanese fluently and I’ve always thought Ryokan was the same as Sento, which is a public bath house. I’ve visited several when I was a kid living in Okinawa. We didn’t have a lot of money when I was a growing up. My father was a Private in the Marine Corps and his pay was low, hardly having any benefits such as base housing and with two kids it was not cutting it. My mother had to wash clothes by hand and we lived in a very small house that didn’t have a bath, so we had to use a public bath. I actually enjoyed it because I got to soak in what seemed to me at the time, a huge hot bathtub. So my image of a Ryokan which also is a bath house was the same thing. Well about 5 years ago my good friend from Sendai, who’s like a brother to me, took us to a Ryokan with his parents. When we drove up to the place it was like a high end Hotel with ladies dressed in Kimonos greeting us at the entrance. It wasn’t a big place but it was nice with a Japanese garden and smooth stone walkway that led up to the front of the place. You need to take your shoes off to enter. Well after seeing this I was amazed. It’s like going to a super upscale hotel with a bath house. In our rooms we had a private Japanese style wooden bath tub. There was also a main one for everyone to use that over looks the mountain with a stream flowing in front. You can actually hear all the birds and the stream flowing down below. The air was slightly chilly and crisp. (not sure if crisp is a term to describe the air, but hopeful you know what I mean) We were only staying for one night so we arrived at around 2 and checked in. The first thing I did was jump right into the main bath house. I enjoyed it so much I ended up soaking for over an hour. After that we all went back to the room and slept for a bit, then later that night we had dinner. Dinner was a three hour experience that was just…. awesome! Awesome is the only way that I can describe it. My parent’s friend has a chef set up a private dining room. As he was prepping things for us he would tell us where the ingredients were from, how it was prepped this morning and while he was cooking, he would explain how he would be cooking it. All the ingredients were from Japan and most of it was from near by vendors or companies. He said they have a long standing commitment to only try to work with local food vendors to help support the community and also they know they are getting what they ask for. The whole experience was just out of this world and I am very grateful for my good friend to invite us to such an 1st class experience. - - - Continued on Page 2 - - - Hours Mon - Sat 10:30-7:00 Sun 10:00-6:00 Closed Christmas New Year Day Telephone 808 597-9055 Email sales@ hawaiian southshore.com Parking Located on the Makai side of the store Sat & Sun OK to park on Mauka Side

Now I understand why Japanese people love Ryokans. Not sure if you knew but theres a restaurant here in Honolulu that has a Ryokan in Japan and they sent the chef here to run the restaurant. He tries to use as much local ingredients as possible and of course just about everything is made from scratch. The course menu changes every month. You need to reserve the course dinner at least one day in advance so we can gather all the needed ingredients and prep it. He also serves a regular menu, you have to be a little patient because he does most of the work himself and he does not cut any corners, even if it’s super busy. !I’m thinking about having a small get together at the beginning of June. I wanted to see if you’d be interested in joining me for some good food and happy times. By all means invite a guest. It’s a small cozy place that only seats maybe 20 people, so I need to get a head count by May 15th. Depending on how many people RSVP I’ll know the exact cost. I believe it will be anywhere from $65 to $80 a head, its going to be a little more then the regular course dinner which is usually $55, but I’ve asked him to make a special course dinner just for our party. So I need to get the RSVP in by May 15th so he can set up a menu and get everything prepped for us. Of course it’ll be a full course meal. I’ve never done this before so I’m kinda hoping and crossing my fingers we’ll get enough people to join me for some

awesome food. Please email me at [email protected] to confirm your reservation or if you like you can call the shop and leave the details with one of us. Please make sure you include your name, phone number and if you’re coming with a guest, the guests name. Oh…I forgot the date, I plan on having it Friday June 6th at around 6:45. It’s located near Ala Moana with plenty of parking. If your reading this on-line use this link to RSVP Here.

!If you’ve talked to anyone that’s ridden a Stewart Hydro Hull

model, most of them will tell you it’s one of the best Longboards they’ve ridden. Bill likes to refer to it as the Jack of all trades. It catches waves with ease, nose rides easy, and performs in small and well over head waves.

The Redline 11 is a refined version of the Hydro Hull but it only comes in one size!! With a variety of widths and thickness to match your height, weight and surf ability. He’s even laid out a chart to help you get the right board. Bill says this is best board he’s designed, “ It ’s the ultimate 9’0 surfboard!” “Turns like an 8’6,” Paddles like a 9’6 and Noserides like a 10’0.”

I finally found Sunscreen that’s not harmful and works perfect for Surfers and SUPers !

For the past couple of years I’ve been using whatever sunscreen was popular with our customers based on their reviews and comments. I tend to surf early morning and late evening but…when the surf is good sometimes I like to sneak in a session during mid day because there are less people in the water and for good reason, the sun is blazing during mid day. For someone like me with a shaved head not only does my face get burnt, my head gets fried also. I’m half Okinawan and Irish but I look more Okinawan because of my dark skin, but my face gets fried…maybe my face has more Irish in it…that’s my theory….LOL. When I was a kid my eyes were jet black and now they’re a light brown and my eyes are more sensitive to the sun, so you see my theory maybe correct, hahaha. With summer just right around the corner I started seeing more and more articles about sunscreen in the

magazines. I was shocked to read about how bad some of the ingredients really are for the human body. After reading that, I was on a mission to find something that wasn’t harmful. Fortunately there are a good amount of Natural sunscreens out there but I didn't like a most of them. I don't think they’re designed for Surf or SUPing because they all tend to be oily and as you know when you get it on your hands it’s hard to grip anything. The ones I used made it hard from me to place my hands on the rail of the board to pop up. After trying out several sunscreens I finally found one that I’m stoked with and its all natural, protected me, and wasn't greasy. Real Sun Cover seems to be doing the trick. I surfed mid day the other day for 3 hours and it totally protected my face…I forgot to apply it to my shaved head and the next day my head turned red, it was embarrassing. I had this line just above my forehead that was tanned on one side and red on other. I should’ve taken a picture because if I showed you, you’d be laughing. But it actually turned out to be a good thing because after seeing the difference, it was proof that it protected me. To be honest this is the first time I’ve used all Natural Sunscreen. I had this image of what all natural protection was….to say the least Junk, but I was proven wrong and now my go to sunscreen is RSC. The only thing I find bad is that it separates when I leave it in the car. I talked to the guys that make it and they said then don't have any type of bonding agent in the sunscreen, so you have to knead the bottle and shake it before using it. We’ve been selling it now for about month and some ladies that like the feel are now using it under their make up. They’ve said it makes it easy to apply

their make up and their skin doesn't dry out. I’m guessing it’s the beeswax that does the trick. Anyways I’m so stoked on it and I really want you to try it so I giving all our Members a coupon. Use it before it expires at the end of this month…so that would be May 31st. Look for the coupon on page 4.
