IT’S PARTY TIME !! This year, instead of a flower sale the Scholarship Committee has decided to throw a Women’s Card/Game Party on Saturday, May 21st from 7:00 – 10:00 p.m. The event will be held at the Family Life Center, and all of the $10 admission fees will go to the Scholarship Fund. Ladies, make this your night out with friends and enjoy whatever game you would like while munching on yummy homemade desserts. We promise to supply door prizes, music, some “surprises,” and, of course, lots of laughter. So, watch for info in your weekly bulletin regarding tickets sales. Any questions call Lou Emerick at 586-468-1522 or Judi Armstrong at 586-557-3203.

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS The Scholarship Committee wants to alert graduating high school seniors that applications are available in the church office for a 2016-2017 FPC College Scholarship. Applications for adults needing new job training or retraining are also available. The applications are prioritized based on need, and can be found on the counter in the office. The application, along with an essay, school transcripts, and proof of college enrollment is due no later than May 1st, 2016.

ATTENTION 2016 HIGH SCHOOL/COLLEGE GRADS! FPC would like to acknowledge this year’s graduates on a bulletin board this June. Please submit a newspaper worthy article to let us know your name, school, major (if college), activities you participated in school, interests, plans for your next step in life (i.e., job, military, college...), and include your best memories of FPC. We will also be publishing your write-up in the June/July Herald. Grads, please email the information to the church office AND if available, a graduation photo or two can be placed in Beth Baker’s mailbox. Submission deadline is May 10th.

To Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen. ~Galatians 1:5

THE HERALD - MAY 2016

Alleluia! Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed!

Easter season is here. It is a time that we, as Christians, celebrate that we live in the hope that God in Jesus Christ has given us. It is a time when we remember the resurrected Christ who overcame death and lives to bring all of us new life so that our cry becomes - Alleluia! Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed!

Living in hope is exactly what God wants us to do in every aspect of our lives. This reminder of living in hope certainly was renewed in me as I traveled home to southern Indiana just a few short weeks ago. The farther south I traveled, the more I experienced spring. The trees were blooming, everything was green and my son was already being a good son-in-law mowing grass up on the family farm for his mother-in-law.

As I write, it is a snowy Sunday in Michigan. Sometimes when spring gets delayed, we begin to wonder if the season of spring will ever arrive - - but - - - I got to be a witness to spring in Indiana – a witness to the beauty that is on its way to Michigan.

All of this waiting for spring to finally arrive makes me think about Jesus’ disciples. They were the witnesses as well. They were witnessed to the risen Christ. They spent time with the resurrected Christ. They heard His promises and so day by day the disciples lived in the promised hope that one day Christ would come again.

Shortly after that first Easter the disciples watched as Jesus ascended into heaven. I can imagine how they stood there watching already anxiously waiting for His return. I can easily imagine how every day they wondered if this would be the day that Christ would come again.

Did those days ever feel to Jesus’ disciples like we feel when it seems that spring just won’t ever come? Could there have been days that they questioned and wondered what Christ was waiting for? Did they wonder about His plan and purpose?

I feel sure that they did and we sometimes wonder too. But we also know from scripture that they continued their mission of spreading the good news that God so loved this old world that He would give His only Son so that all of us could have everlasting life. Because of their mission of spreading the gospel, we too make our song saying - Alleluia! Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed! That is our job in mission too. We are to spread the gospel and we are to continue with the mission of the church while we wait.

It is important for you to know is that the elders of our church are asking questions too. Questions like, “What is God doing in this place?” “What is God asking of us as His current day followers?” “What important mission(s) does God want us to invest our time and resources in?” The session is currently seeking to enter into a strategic planning process to establish and communicate goals that they, as the leadership of this church, feel called to. These goals will become our goals that we will all hopefully embrace and work on together.

As your current teaching elder, I look forward to watching and embracing the work that your faith filled elders establish and to help them through preaching and teaching, communicate to this community our goals. As we listen and as we together remain faithful, I look forward to days coming when together we will have many opportunities to make our song – Alleluia! Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed!

Faithfully walking the journey with you,

Pastor Peggy

The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God's people. Amen. ~Revelation 22:21

HEALTHY EATING MEETINGS Are you ready for a “spring cleaning” of not just your house, but yourself as well? As the weather [hopefully] begins to warm, join your fellow church members in a discussion lead by Mary Ball, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, to uncover fact or myth of all the fad diets, popular foods, and exercise trends. With such strong ties to the media, it is difficult to know what to believe. What’s the scoop on coconut oil? How much sugar is “okay” for us? And what oh what is gluten really? Come on Sunday, May ______ after the 2nd Service to find out how these topics and more impact you and your life!

In Revelation 3:14, one of Jesus’ is called "The Amen, the Faithful and True Witness"

THE PRESBYTEERS’ CORNER The Presbyteers’, a senior group 50 years and older, meet in the Parlor at 10:00 a.m. on the second Monday of each month.

Upcoming 2015 Dates For Your Calendar May 9th — Sit in with the Presbyteers’ as they are entertained by Jerry Kurtz and his piano magic. Afterward the group will have lunch at The Aspen on Hall Road. June 13th — The Presbtyteers’ “End of Year” get

THE VACATION MAP For the seventh year in a row, the popular Vacation Map will be hung so we all can see where you’ve been on your summer vacation! We won't be able to tag

along on your trip, but we do hope you'll think of us while you’re gone. We'd love to hear about the summer fun you're having! As you travel now through Labor Day, keep in touch with First Presbyterian Church by taking a moment to send us a postcard or two. As soon as we receive your card, we’ll hang it on a bulletin board in the Narthex beside a big map of the United States. Then we’ll stretch a piece of yarn from your postcard to your vacation location on the map. Beginning Memorial Day weekend, don’t forget to regularly check the bulletin board to see where your church family travels for the next few months. It’ll give us a feeling that we're together even when we're apart. May your summer be filled with sunshine, family and safe travels!

WEDNESDAY NIGHT PROGRAM Our Wednesday night program is coming to a close. The children will meet through May 11th. On that evening we will have a cook-out

and those children in 5th grade who have been attending the Wednesday program will be recognized as they “fly up” to the Junior High Youth group.

The children will sing and play the hand bells at both services for Mother’s Day on May 8th. They will also participate in the service that Sunday. Please make sure your child is at the “Let It Shine” service between services to receive their part for that Sunday!

ANGELS IN TRAINING This program is led by Terry Capen and assisted by Nina Ferri as part of our Wednesday program. The children are training to be good stewards for God. They make cards for people who are sick. They make special gifts for those people who work in the church. They a T-shirt for Pastor Dan to thank him for all he does for our church. They prepare packets for children who are in the hospital and write them encouraging notes. They prepare the bags to be used for “Blessings in a Backpack”. They color placemats for the Warming Center and MCREST. These children are learning the true sense of Mission in the church. Stop and thank them for all they do. Remember to thank Ms Terry and Nina for their time and talent that are so freely given to our children!

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL Mark your calendars! VBS is just around the corner, Sunday to Thursday, July 10th-14th. We are in need of center leaders, classroom leaders, teachers, teacher aides, and kitchen help. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Barb Jung, Amy Kindt or Ms Peggy. There will be a sign-up sheet in the Narthex. Our theme this year will be “Son Games” as we celebrate the Olympics taking place this summer! It will really BE fun and games!!

TEACHER RECOGNITION SUNDAY On June 5th we will honor our teachers and leaders who have been instrumental in helping us grow in our faith. There are so many people who step up and work with and teach our babies, toddlers, children, youth and adults as we all work to grow in God’s grace. We are SO grateful for their generous gift of time when we are all so busy with our lives. These people give unselfishly to promote the welfare of all of God’s children and we thank you!

Amen is the last word found in the Bible. (Revelation 22:21)

Here are this month’s birthday boys and girls. Over the past year, if your name hasn’t appeared on this list, or if you see that a date is wrong, please call

the office. Also, take a moment to mail a card or two to make someone’s birthday special! Most addresses can be found in the church directory.

PRAYER SHAWL MINSITRY Prayer Shawl Ministry will offer prayer shawls, lap robes, high school graduation blankets, and baptism blankets for blessing at

both services on May 1st.

Over the next several months, all members of our church family are invited to help replenish our dwindling supply of prayer shawls and lap robes. Many have been needed to bring comfort, peace, and healing to God’s people over the past year. If you are led to use your hands and heart to help Prayer Shawl Ministry, contact Mary Murphy or Carole Scharnweber. Whether you can make one item or several, whether you are a beginner or advanced knitter or crocheter, whether you wish to join the fellowship of the monthly meetings or prefer to work at home on your own, all are welcome to participate in this ministry of spreading God’s love. Prayer Shawl Ministry has donated over 1700 items to touch the lives of people in need, in celebration, and those going to Spring Hill since 2009. Your donations of items and time are greatly appreciated!

The next meeting of Prayer Shawl Ministry will be on Thursday, May 12th at 10:00-11:30. Please join us!

CANNED GOODS SUNDAY Every first Sunday of the month is the day that FPC collects non-perishable food items in both services for Father Bob’s Food Shelf. Another way to remember is that the collection will be taken on communion Sundays year round. Deacon Dorothy Leach makes sure these items are taken over to the food pantry. It is so nice to see all the non-perishable goods coming in each month. Thanks!

FPC MEN’S GOLF LEAGUE We are looking for all men who would like to play on the FPC Men's Golf League at Hickory Hollow (49001 North Ave, Macomb). The season will officially start Monday, May 2nd, teeing off at 4:30 p.m.

through Labor Day. The cost of the League is $290, which includes green fees and prize money, but not the practice rounds. Hickory Hollow charges $5 for an electric golf cart, and for an additional $5, you can play an extra nine holes. Call Tom Davies at 586-707-2800 or Imad Ghandour at 586-615-5488 with your questions.

COED GOLF LEAGUE IS BACK Last year, fourteen people played golf every other Friday at 4:30 p.m. The quality of golf varied greatly but the amount of fun was high for everyone. We will play again this year at Rammler Golf Club on Utica Road and Schoenherr in Sterling Heights. Play will begin on May 13th and run until sometime in September. If you are interested in playing talk to Joe Moore or send him an email at [email protected]. This is open to church members and friends.

In the King James version of the Bible, the word Amen, appears 78 times!

THE HERALD - MAY 2016

CROP HUNGER WALK For years FPC has supported the CROP Hunger Walk, which, this year is being held at First United Methodist Church on Sunday, May 1st. Registration begins at 1:15 p.m. with the walk beginning at 1:45

p.m. CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) Hunger Walks are community fundraising events sponsored by Church World Service (CWS), an international relief, development, and refugee resettlement agency. Money raised by nationwide CROP Walks is used by CWS to provide food, medical care, disaster relief, and self-help development for needy people around the world. Twenty-five percent of the money raised in these walks is distributed to local hunger-alleviating agencies in the East Macomb County Area. The agencies chosen by the local CROP Walk Planning Team to receive funds this year are: The Community Meal Program of First United Methodist Church; The Soup Kitchen of Grace Episcopal Church, and the Community Meal Program of Zion United Church of Christ. This year’s goal is to reach $15,000 with at least 125 sponsored participants walking the planned ¾ mile route. So, keep on the lookout for walkers waving their pledge envelopes! For more information please see Gloria Cynowa or Ben Bouwman or go to www.crophungerwalk.org/mountclemensmi FAMILY LIFE CENTER The FLC is booking up fast as people are beginning to plan graduation parties, reunions, and bridal showers. The FLC is the most reasonable space for our church members with a $100 usage fee giving you four hours of time and use of the entire building, including tables and chairs. (Don’t forget about the firepit and picnic tables out back.) Get your reservation in soon… Call Judi at 586-557-3203.

This is the season of renewal. After a very pensive season of Lenten music followed by a victorious Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday, it is time for us to continue our

celebration of praise! ALL persons, men, women, teens, and children, interested in singing on a team in the Morning Glory are encouraged to contact Sue Peters. Wonderful things are planned, and now we need the 'Next man Up' (thank you for that sermon, James Hopson) to fill needed positions. It is greatly rewarding without a great time commitment.

Staff is in the process of updating our computers at home to synchronize with the computers at the church. We are looking for some laptops to replace some outdated computers. If anyone one has one for sale (or free!), please let the church office know. Thank you!

The school year is heading to a close, and so is the choir season. We will celebrate this on May 22nd at Music Sunday where all of our choirs will be present!

Children’s Choir: I am so impressed with the Children’s Choir this year. They have learned and done so much. They have sung about once a month, lead worship, performed a mini-Christmas musical, and a full Spring musical! They are a wonderful group of kids.

Youth Choir: I’m afraid this choir hasn’t really had the start we were hoping for, but we still aren’t giving up. So if you are a youth or know a youth who might be interested in helping get the choir going, come talk to me so we can figure out how to make this work.

Chancel Choir: I have to say a big Thank You! to the Chancel Choir. Your support and dedication to the music at FPC is wonderful. I also want to thank those people who can’t join us every week but sing with us when they can, it is always nice to have a few more voices, like we did on Easter!

Stay tuned for more information about Summer Choir and music! We’re looking to put some different groups together, so keep your eyes open for your group!

Please contact me with any questions, concerns, comments, haikus. Many blessings, Sara Ball
