HOT DOG
President’s Report ………………………………………………………………………………
Hi Everyone,
I hope every member had a good Easter and Anzac Day
and spent quality time with their dogs.
The club is going smoothly with improved numbers of
participants in each disciple. It is good to see everyone
enjoy their dogs.
We held a member’s trial with record participants. It was
a good day weather wise and everyone was happy.
Congratulations go to Lenore and her team of volunteers
for wonderfully run event. Also, congratulations go to all
place-getters and to everyone who took part. We hope
you all had a great day and we will let you know when the
next event is scheduled.
Now: the renovation of the hall is going on rapidly. It is on
target to finish in late July or early August. Let’s wait and
see…

As a club, we are dedicated volunteers
consequently we require more people to
volunteers their services to help the club run
efficiently.
Without you volunteering your time this club would
not be able to run. Please talk to Terri on Sundays
at obedience training and Irene at agility on
Wednesdays.
Our club desperately requires van drivers so
everyone with a manual licence can drive the short
distance from where it lives in Warwick to training
on Sundays. It would be an advantage to have two
people. One to drive the van and the other to drive
the dog to training. However, it certainly can be
done by one person.
Another way of helping the club is to be a
committee member. At present there is an
opportunity for a go getter with some time on hand
to help your dog club. There are several positions to
be filled.
It’s a good idea to check your club’s calendar out for
future exciting events and check our social media
for up to date information. Please be aware that all
our current forms are easily downloadable from our
website.
See you all at training
Paul

From the Editor
Hi Everyone,
Please accept my apologies for this edition
being so late. I know that you all wait for these
publications with bated breath.
But it is finally here so you can all settle in for
great read as usual.
Paul has already mentioned it in his message,
but we are encouraging as many people as
possible to become a volunteer with the Club.
Many hands really do make light work and the
more people who help, the less anyone will
have to do.
We urgently need people willing to drive the
van a very short distance to and from the
grounds on Sunday morning. All you need is a
regular manual licence. Even doing it once will
help. Included at the end of this is a volunteer
form. Fill it out, email it back and feel the
satisfaction of doing something good.
FYI: we have a first aid kit in the van, as well as
a defibrillator. Just in case, you know we have
one.
The lovely dog at the featured on the front is
my dog Skye. If you would like to see your dog
in the Hot Dog, please send me a photo and a
little bio and we’d love to include it in the next
issue.
I’d also like to thank our very generous
Sponsors, Nutro for continuing to support the
club. We are very proud to have their support.
Cheers,
Lenore
A Dachshund walks into a telegraph office,
picks up a blank form, and writes: “Woof.
Woof. Woof. Woof. Woof. Woof. Woof. Woof.
Woof.”
The clerk looks over the paper for a minute
before telling the dog, “You know, there are
only nine words here. You could add another
‘Woof’ for the same price.”
The Dachshund shakes his head at the clerk
in disbelief. “But that would make no sense at
all.”

Kalmpets:
A discussion on Dog Behaviours
The lovely and talented Dr Kate Lindsay and
Tracey Lord from Kalmpets were good enough to
invite the trainers and committee to their
Balcatta offices for a discussion on dog
behaviours and achieving the optimum learning
conditions for dogs.
Much of the evening was spent discussing ways
to keep your dog stimulated and happy as well
as providing an environment that promotes
learning and good behaviour.
The Kalmpets has some excellent resources
available on its site at
http://www.kalmpets.com/
We would like to thank Kalmpets for supporting
the club and holding this information evening for
us.

Hot Dog Topical
The power of tug I often hear from people that they don’t want to play tug with their dog, they are worried it will encourage unwanted behaviours or aggression. But if you approach it the right way, a game of tug is a powerful bond-builder. When you stand at the park and throw the ball for your dog, where is the value in that game for your dog? The value is in the ball, which you’ve just thrown away. Playing tug with your dog helps to develop a bond between you; the value of play is with you, not 20 metres away where the ball has landed. Some dogs have an inherent love of tug games, whereas others need to be taught. For those dogs, check out youTube for videos showing how to teach tug to a dog. Some tug basics - you’ll also hear these tips about play in our classes:
• Remember to keep the toy down low to avoid Fido from jumping up, and don’t jolt the toy back and forth else you’ll damage his neck.
• Don’t allow Fido to snatch the toy from your hands, instead give him a cue such as ‘get it’, or ‘lets play’. You may also want to wait until Fido sits before you release him to play.
• Regularly interrupt play to regulate Fido’s arousal levels, and so he can learn that stopping play isn’t such a bad thing. You can exchange the toy for food, or for the dogs who prefer tug over food, restart the game as a reward for handing over the toy.
You can find a wide variety of tug toys from our sponsor, Better Pets and Gardens, but you can also use your imagination. You could use a tennis ball knotted in an old sock, braid strips of fleece together to make a soft rope, or use an old towel or t-shirt rolled up and knotted. A well known Canadian trainer even uses a fly swatter as a tug toy for one of her dogs. Just be sure to keep the tug toy away from Fido when you’re not supervising, you don’t want him to swallow something he shouldn’t. So next time you take your dog to the park, run around with your dog and engage in a game of tug, make you the fun thing at the park, and in time, Fido won’t find the ducks, dogs, or other distractions quite as appealing.
