Chris Cohea, Program Director, Raccoon Valley Radio is asking for Adair County 4-H Clubs support in promoting the 4-H program and the Adair County Fair. He would like to set up times with each club to record a few 4-Hers in a very short promo piece stating their name, what club they are in and what they are showing at this year’s county fair. It’s very simple to do and it’s a great way to pro-mote our county fair. Please contact Chris as soon as possible and set up a time to meet with him or he can come to your club meeting. He can also do phone interviews if that’s easier.

Swine Tagged for Adair County
and Iowa State Fair Adair County 4-H and FFA members tagged 123 pigs as part of the countywide tagging. These pigs are now eligible to exhibit at the 2018 Adair County Fair. The county fair swine show is Thursday, July 19th. Pigs will be entered at the county fair on Wednesday, July 18th, 7:00 – 8:30 am. Sunday, July 22 - swine not sold to the packer are released between 6:30 - 7:30 am; swine barn cleaning follows at 7:30 a.m.
The following twenty-one youth identified pigs: Ayden and Carter Goetz, Makinley Edwards, and Emma Lundy, Fontanelle; Belle Fagan, Cash, Cade and Madison Suhr, and Mallory Wheatley, Adair; Conner and Sara Beane, Stuart; Alissa Brownlee, Macksburg; Tucker (Sloth) Rohrig, Orient; Beau and Reagan Weinheimer, and Annika & Matt Nelson, Greenfield; Halee Wallace, Creston; and Lukas and Krista James, Massena; Gage Bulter, Guthrie Center. We welcome five 4th grade members to swine production and exhibition!
Twenty-seven of the pigs tagged were also entered in the Lean Value Carcass contest sponsored by the Adair County Pork Producers. Final placing in the contest will be determined by lean carcass value – not lean gain per day on test – as pigs were not weighed during the tagging process. Carcass merit is determined using ultrasound.
Makinley Edwards, Lukas James and Tucker (Sloth) Rohrig verified pigs with a special DNA ear tag making them eligible for the 2018 Iowa State Fair 4-H Swine Show. New classes for 2018 County Fair are - Purebred and Prospect Breeding Gilt. Prospect Market Pig (pigs weighing 219 or less) division now include barrow, gilt and purebred classes.

The Adair County Youth Council met for their regular meeting on April 15th at 3pm in the Green Room at the Warren Cultural Center.
Members started discussing activities to do at the Coun-ty Fair during Kid’s Day and what they would like to do to fundraise money for scholarships during the fair. More details will be released after the May meeting.
After the meeting, Youth Council members put together anti-viral kits for the Adair County Memorial Hospital. Kits included items to help people fight off viral infections, such as hand sanitizer, a bottle of water, chap stick, tissues, and information about viral infections. These kits will be given to patients who are diagnosed with a viral infection. The goal of these kits is to cut down on the amount of antibiotics given out to fight anti-biotic resistance.
