“To a land where the children are free, And you and me are free to be” From the Marlo Thomas series theme song
At the end of last month
we celebrated Passover, the festival of
Freedom. I often wonder what makes
people free. Politically it is the ability to
vote, socially it is the ability to be with
whomever you want. But what about
personal freedom? What makes me free?
It is telling the truth. Sometimes I have
been criticized for being blunt, but I still
take pride in being able to look at my
words as being truthful. When someone
mis-characterizes what I say or just plain
makes up imaginary dialogues, it annoys
me no end.
The knowledge at the end of the day
that I have spoken the truth gives me the
lightness of heart and pureness of heart
that only true joy can bring.
There is one caveat to telling the truth.
When one’s telling the truth would do more
harm to the hearer than help. Then (Continued on page 3)

perhaps, before expressing the ‘truth’, it needs to remain silent or ultimately
forgotten.
Speaking of the end of the day, I want to talk about another source of purity
freedom, Freedom of accomplishment. Shabbat is a time of rest. It is
mentioned for the first time in the Book of Genesis, chapter 1, where it says
“And on the seventh day G-d rested from all He had created”.
It does not say, “He rested from all He didn’t get done”. The freedom of
Accomplishment and inherent relaxation comes from appreciating all that you
do. For example, all the preparations for Passover start right after Purim. I bet
people don’t look at all the arrangements, the foodstuffs, the invitations, as a
source of joy, they become obsessed with what still has to be done. How can
you celebrate the festival of Freedom if you feel imprisoned in lack of
accomplishment? In the Haggadah, there is a discussion of whether we should
begin celebrating Passover on the first of Nisan or wait until the 15th. We
celebrate it on the 15th today but the discussion is enlightening. We should start
feeling free two weeks early speaks to the freedom of knowing, while you have
not completed all the holiday preparations you have begun; the process of
accomplishment, in itself has huge value. Honestly .as the cliché says, “A
journey of a thousand miles begins with a first step”. Be positive with yourself,
every small step brings us closer to our goal, so acknowledge the journey, not
just the goal. Then you will have the freedom to see and appreciate all the
oases along the way. If you appreciate the truth and your accomplishments
then you can TRULY say,
“Free at last, Free at last, Thank G-d I am Free at Last.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE - May 2019 When I became president of our Temple, I never thought I would have to write letter
trying to reassure our Temple family that our Temple With a Heart was a safe place to
be. Within the past six months, I’ve written two.
Our Temple Beth Emet community is shocked and saddened by the shooting at the
Poway Chabad Center on Saturday, April 27, 2019. We join with the Chabad of
Poway family in mourning the loss of Lori Kay and pray for the complete healing of
body and spirit of Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, Almog Peretz, and 8 year-old Noya Dahan.
This evil act was perpetrated by a young man who is also thought to be involved in an arson attack
against a mosque in nearby Escondido.
While we are shaken by this senseless act of violence against a Jewish congregation, we remember that
such acts can happen and have happened, not only at any religious institution, but also at schools and
colleges, movie theaters and parks, shopping centers and hotels. It is incumbent upon each of us,
therefore, to remain vigilant. Many acts are preceded by warning signs such as disturbing posts on social
media. “See something, say something” is more than a cleaver slogan, it is a successful strategy.
As more facts surrounding the attack become available, we are grateful to learn that the active shooter
training taken by the synagogue staff and clergy was helpful in guiding the actions of those present and
help prevent further harm. We are reassured by the fact that all faculty and staff at Temple Beth Emet,
along with Rabbi Sobel and many board members, recently received similar training from the Burbank
Police Department. Our video doorbells provide a record of activity around our entry doors which can be
downloaded and provided to the police department.
Following the attack in Poway, we contacted Burbank Police to request additional patrols of our facility.
We are blessed to be part of a community where the local police take it upon themselves to protect
houses of worship when incidents occur before they are even asked.
While Poway reflects an increase in anti-Semitic crimes in our country over the past several years, it is
important to understand that there have also been criminal acts against Islamic and Christian houses of
worship, not only in the United States, but around the world. The Burbank ecumenical community stands
united against such evil. In recognition of that unity, we urge you to join with others in community in
attending the Days of Remembrance Community Commemoration of the Holocaust presented by the
Burbank Human Relations Council on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at 7:15 PM at American Lutheran Church,
755 N. Whitnall Highway (at Hollywood Way) in Burbank. This annual program not only commemorates
the Holocaust, but recognizes the violence and oppression against other peoples in recent history.
We are also grateful for the love, strength, and support of our Temple family, our larger community, and all people of good will. As Rabbi Yonah Fradkin, executive director of Chabad of San Diego County observed, “we strongly believe that love is exponentially more powerful than hate.”

EDUCATION MATTERS - RSPA President, CHERIE RYE
Our Religious School Seder was so wonderful that I’m going to let the picture do the talking for me this month. Our Religious School term concludes on May 19. Thank you all for helping to make this a wonderful year! As this school year comes to a close, we will once again be dancing! Preschool and Religious School will be holding the annual Dance-a-Thon on Sunday, May 19, from noon – 2. This is our one fund raiser of the year and we look forward to its continued success. In the past, monies raised paid for the opening of preschool’s second and then third classrooms – including new flooring and paint, bicycles and other improvements to our outside play area and more. Along with dancing with our own DJ, there will be prizes, raffle, bake sale and lunch for purchase. We’re all looking forward to a great time! Registration is $12.

TEMPLE BETH EMET PRESCHOOL - ELAINE ROSENFIELD, DIRECTOR
Dear Temple Beth Emet Congregants, Board of Trustees, TBE office and Rabbi, As this will be my last article in the Chai Times, I wanted it to be one of thanks. I thank you all for the opportunity I was given to start a preschool with what I considered to be best practices. I was given the freedom to hire a team of women that I loved working with as well as learning from. As I watched the preschool grow from six children to the point of needing a second classroom and then a third, it was gratifying to know coming out of retirement was a good decision. Under the direction of Hayley Wood, I am confident that the seeds she helped me plant will grow and flourish. Hayley has been here from day 1 and loves this school, the children, parents, teachers and TBE community. As I head back into retirement, I will miss being at the preschool door each morning welcoming my little friends and their parents. What a great way to start the day! I will miss the impromptu meetings with parents, I now consider friends, whether it be about raising children or just about life in general. I will miss my young friends looking forward to my "great" lunches...somehow my own four children never mentioned my making the BEST chicken nuggets! There are just so many things I will miss. As I leave, I know the preschool is in great hands. I have worked with Hayley for seventeen years and I can think of no one better to lead this school. Thank you all for the confidence and appreciation you’ve shown me over the past three years. I wish you all the best. Shalom, Elaine Rosenfield Soon-to-be Former Preschool Director Ps…we are now registering for summer camp and the 2019-2020 school year. Hayley can be reached at (818) 861-7660 or [email protected]

The Sisterhood has had another very busy month. The Annual Parking Lot Sale was held on Sunday, April 7. We had a terrific turnout and did quite well.
Many thanks to Marlene Dreyfuss for buying a banner for the event. Thank you again to Marlene and Victoria for hanging the banner. It was very visible from the street.
Many thanks to Phil Berman for again grilling hot dogs for us. Many thanks to all of who helped out with the sale! Your hard work is greatly appreciated. When we band together, we get things done.
Most things seem to sell. We had a steady turnout from 8:00 when we opened until 2:30 when we closed. Thanks also to Barbara Harmon for taken much of what was left to charity, likewise, Eileen and Marlene. Also, Cheri Rye, who brought a clothing rack and hung up all the clothes. Thanks also to Susie Berman, Lucy Berman, Shirley Abramson, Anne Berman, Jay Geiseheimer, Leona Zolman, Joanne Serrin, Eileen Martin, Marlene Dreyfuss, Victoria Gaffney and anyone I might have left out. Also, thanks to the guys, Phil, Michael, and Rabbi.
The annual Passover Dinner was held Saturday night, April 27. We had a great turnout, a wonderful spread, inspiring words from the Rabbi and lots of fun. Thank you to all who brought food. Thanks to the Bermans for the cut up chicken, Fran for the matzo ball soup, Marlene for vegetables, Eileen for buying everything, Anne for some delicious kugels. Thank you to Joanne for charoses and kugel, Shirley for charoses, Barbara Harmon for salad, Cheri for the eggs, Birdie for a rice pilaf, Victoria for your delicious scalloped potatoes. Ira, thank you for the delicious desserts! Thank you all for all your help setting up and cleaning up. Thanks for finding shank bones and setting up the seder plates.
Many thanks for Margaret and Jean Mintz for helping to set up and clean up afterwards. I hope I didn't leave anyone out. If I did, thank you too.
To all of you who helped, we couldn't have done it without you!
A little update on the Temple gift shop. The gift shop has some lovely prayer shawls and attractive yarmulkes. Check with Shirley Abramson.

Do You Have a Son and/or Daughter In College?
Temple Beth Emet has started a program to connect with our students
attending a College. We would like to help them to continue their Jewish
way of life and offer them additional support. This way, they will always have
an open line of communication with our Rabbi, should they have questions or
need direction; and we will remind them of their link to Israel and to keep
connected to the Jewish Community. After college, we hope to have them
join our Temple, as an adult.
Please send an e-mail to [email protected] and give the following
information:
The name of the Student;
Class Level;
Address;
Name of the University, and;
If the Student is a member of any organization or club on
campus.
The Temple will send a care-package for each holiday, as a gift to the
Student with a calendar of events at the Temple for each month. The
Student will be invited to all events sponsored by the Temple. We would like
to encourage the Student to return to the Temple as often as they wish; as
the Temple would like to offer itself as a second home and place of Jewish
learning. We look forward hearing from you!

What is the book we
will read and discuss: The Only Woman in the Room: A Novel by Marie Benedic
She possessed a stunning beauty. She also possessed a stunning mind. Could the world handle both?
Her beauty almost certainly saved her from the rising Nazi party and led to marriage with an Austrian arms dealer. Underestimated in everything else, she overheard the Third Reich's plans while at her husband's side, understanding more than anyone would guess. She devised a plan to flee in disguise from their castle, and the whirlwind escape landed her in Hollywood. She became Hedy Lamarr, screen star.
But she kept a secret more shocking than her heritage or her marriage: she was a scientist. And she knew a few secrets about the enemy. She had an idea that might help the country fight the Nazis...if anyone would listen to her.
A powerful novel based on the incredible true story of the glamour icon and scientist whose
groundbreaking invention revolutionized modern communication, The Only Woman in the
Room is a masterpiece.
Where to get the book: The book is available on Kindle and in print at Amazon.com and other retailers.
Please read the book and be prepared to discuss it.
Cost of Participating: Free!
