"Me voy y volveré a ustedes"

Many of the needy that we meet with each week suffer from devastating medical concerns. Take for example Sherry. At 39 with two grown children, she and her new husband decided to have a baby. It was with great difficulty that Sherry finally conceived, and the couple eagerly awaited the arrival of their “miracle child.” It wasn’t too far into the pregnancy that doctors realized something was wrong – the baby was not developing normally and there was a chance he might not survive. The pregnancy was tough on both mom and baby, and when the baby was finally born, he faced serious medical problems: his liver as in his chest cavity and because of that one of his lungs had not even developed. There were also heart problems. Mom and Dad took the baby to Dallas for surgery where his liver was placed in its normal position, and which would hopefully allow his other lung to develop. But he still faces at least two more surgeries on his lung and heart to give him that fighting chance. In the meantime, Dad was arrested on an old warrant, and is in prison. He is probably not getting out for several months. Sherry, who had always been self-sufficient and has never asked for help from agencies before, was referred to us by her landlord. He felt so strongly for the plight of this woman that he personally drove her to our office. By the time she reached us she was already two months behind on her rent. The baby’s surgery in Dallas had kept her off work – her attention to her baby took all of her time. She told us that she had never been in such a financial plight before, and it scared her – but not nearly as much as her baby’s fragile medical condition. She said she didn’t know how she was going to get through the next few months, but all that really mattered to her was that her son survives. As she sat quietly rocking him and stroking his hair, he sucked on his pacifier and stared intently at his mother. At one point he reached for her hair and smiled. Mom smiled back and gently kissed his forehead. Helping Hands paid the two months of her past due rent plus the current month that was due. We partnered with a local church that promised to pay two additional months. This will hopefully give her time to get situated, find time for her son to begin to heal, seek daycare, get and job and prayerfully get on with their lives. Please pray that they make it. Please!
