I’m delighted to say that this particular President’s Corner is being drafted in the air. I am en route to Dallas, Texas. Why you ask? Why would I even mention that? Well, I’m traveling for BMW, or rather a BMW. I am delighted to report that I am going to retrieve my dream car, literally the car that I have dreamt about for many years... since I was a young boy reading my first BMW brochure!

I am pleased to announce that our first 2018 Peninsula Breakfast was a delightful success. We had a great turnout and I rather enjoyed meeting with members whom I’ve never had conversations with before. As I mentioned in my first article, I will continue to share a little about me in each issue. To that end, I’d like to put out a challenge you, our members reading this. I challenge you to write in (or email) a brief description of your start with BMW. A simple

paragraph will suffice, longer if you wish. Feel free to even include a picture. We all have a unique story on how we came to know the brand we dearly love, so why not share that with each other!

At breakfast I was amused at a conversation that began on a topic I have often wondered about... our logo. As you may know we have two logos, the Horse Collar twin kidney grill logo, and the M-colored Checkered Flag logo. I am uncertain as to the origin of these logos, as I have seen both since being involved with the club. The conversation during breakfast was which logo do you prefer and why? Reasons varied including history, heritage, uniqueness (or lack there of) and design. Surprisingly, despite one logo being older than the other, a member’s tenure did not directly correlate to which logo was preferred. Although this was just a small sampling, it was not the first I heard of it. As a Board we will discuss the possibility of a logo refresh. By refresh I do not mean an entirely new logo, but rather a new spin on something we have.

We have many exciting events on the horizon. We make an effort to ensure they are enjoyable to all and vary between both sides of the water. I hope you will make an effort to attend. With the exception of our Annual Banquet we do not charge for participation, so the only cost is your time. To that end we strive to not impose additional expenses for events, but as a non-profit that is a challenge at times. For that reason I am going to ask a simple request of you all. Please help support the club in one fashion or another. We have nametags and calendars for sale at $20 each. We also have apparel including hats, shirts and more. We don’t want to charge excessively for these items, but the small profit margin does help us put on nice events and not charge admittance. Additionally, we always accept help planning for events. As I mentioned in the previous edition, the more help we have the easier it is on all.

Additionally we have a few remaining seats for the M-Performance School on Saturday June 9th. If you have even the slightest inclination to attend I encourage you to register now. We are being granted a discount in excess of 50% per driver, which makes this incredible opportunity that much nicer. Additionally, we will have a private tour of the BMW Foundation. We are also in great need of volunteers for our Street Survival course Sunday September 16th.

“Good day to you fellow Bimmer Enthusiasts!”

I wanted to take a few minutes and share with you a little about myself and what it is exactly that I do. I am 26 years old, serve in the Navy, and own the Laguna Seca Blue E46 M3 most of you have probably seen at some event this past year.

I take great pride in that car and love going to events with it. About this time last year, I took over the Activities Chair from Al Schneider right in time for the April BBQ.

I hope you’ve all been pleased with the quality of events this past year that have been created. From the normal Sunday drives to the Tire Rack Street Survival last October. On a day to day basis, being the Activities Chair is not difficult. For most events, I put an email out to the activities committee asking for any help for upcoming events and I get responses every time.

From there, planning routes and locations for drives are easily handled and phone calls made for reserving meals. Only the big events have required much attention, such as the TRSS event we held last year and the BBQ we host yearly. Both these events have always been well handled and organized by volunteers like you, reading the articles and responding to emails put out looking for volunteers. To that, I thank everyone for for their help and hard work, it does not go unnoticed. I now ask once again for someone to step forward and volunteer themselves to help me out. I have to leave at the end of the year and thus I need someone to take my place. If you wish to know more about taking up this position, please email myself or call me. You may find me by looking at my contact info listed in this Newsletter. I will be more than happy to discuss things with you. I hope you all have enjoyed the events brought to you!

Upcoming events can be found on the Motorsportreg website by searching for them as listed below or by typing in BMW CCA - Tidewater Chapter.

Spring has finally arrived! Just in time for the annual photo ops drive in lovely Williamsburg, Va.

As a member of this chapter of the BMW CCA I’ve made many friends and met many BMW owners and enthusiasts. We are all different in our own way, but one attribute (maybe two, if you count our palates) we all share is the love for our own BMW’s and the

willingness to share that experience with others.

A warm thank you to all who came out and made this event so enjoyable. Please visit our Shutterfly to view the gallery of photos.

On another note, I would like to invite all members to contribute to the newsletter by sending your articles to [email protected]

Remember to include photos if you have them and also include your member number please.

See you soon!

In order to allow all of our members to view and share photos from our events, we have a Shutterfly share site and we have recently updated that site. What I’d like to do in this short article is to tell you a little about it and invite you to view and share photos.

HOW tO access site

Our share site is at: https://tidewaterbmwcca.shutterfly.com/. Since our site is on Shutterfly, you must first set up a Shutterfly account with your Log-in ID and password; to do this, go to Shutterfly’s home page (https://www.shutterfly.com )and click on Sign Up (you are not purchasing anything; about the only thing that will happen is that you’ll start getting Emails from Shutterfly, which you can unsubscribe to) – if you already have a Shutterfly account, you’re good.

If you’d like to be able to upload pictures you have taken at any of our events or download pictures, please send one of the club officers an Email (our Email addresses are located on page 2 of this magazine). Once you do so, one of us will send you an Email inviting you to the site. Then, after logging in, you’ll see this:

If you click on the PLEASE READ heading, you’ll be taken to a page that provides instructions on how to either:

• Upload pictures to share with all of us

• Download photos for your own use.

The CALENDAR heading is a link to the club’s web calendar

The SIGN UP heading is a link to MotorSportReg, which is how you can quickly and easily sign up for our club events. By the way, once you have a MotorSportReg account, you can set a “dashboard” of events, customized to your likes and geographic preferences (for example, my dashboard displays in addition to our club events, all autocross and high performance driving events within a 300 mile range). You can add as much information as you’d like to your account

Now for the real meat of the site. If you click on PHOTOS & VIDEOS, you see the screen to the right.

This section contains an album for almost every event that club has sponsored dating back to 2012 – well over 50 albums. The newest event albums are displayed first. Once you find the event album you’re interested in, click on VIEW ALBUM. You will then see all of the pictures we have for that event. Please feel free to:

• Download those of interest to you

• Upload any of your own pictures that you’d like to share with us

• Tag yourself or other members in the pictures you view.

• Select ADD PICTURES from the menu that appears

• Click on the orange UPLOAD button that appears on the next screen

o Select the pictures you just uploaded and delete them -- each photo will have an orange checkmark and you click on the trash can; don’t worry, the pictures are also in the album on the share site. I guess it’s one of those “features” of Shutterfly

THE ICON The car that started it all… and you can be there to help celebrate it in 2018 at the BMW CCA Foundation’s ongoing “birthday party” for the legendary BMW 2002. THE ICON: 50 Years of the 2002 exhibition opens on Friday, May 18th; however, YOU can get a special tour of the exhibit and the Foundation’s archives along with other displays when you attend our Tidewater Chapter’s Performance Driving Event on June 9th.

After wringing out our driving suits we will head over to the BMW CCA Foundation building, which is right next door to BMW’s Performance Driving Center in Greer, SC. A member of the Foundation will be present to answer questions and provide insight about the cars on display. This is a unique opportunity likely matched only by the Grand Opening of the exhibition on May 18th and the YTBD closing gala in January of next year.

Twenty-four exceptional 2002s are gathered to tell the story of the car, the cult, and the impact still being felt in the automotive scene today. Pristine examples of all stock variations will be represented, along with period custom editions, significant race cars and an outstanding selection of lightly and highly modified 02s.

We will see more than the cars. The Museum will be packed to the rafters with 2002-related art, memorabilia and rarities never seen before. Author Jackie Jouret has done extensive research on the development of the 2002, and in so doing, discovered new information never before released. We are guaranteed to learn and experience something new. And of course ICON exhibition books, posters and merchandise will all be available to feed our undying obsession. A modest admission of only $5 for BMW CCA members and $10 for non-members will be charged to defray the Foundation’s costs. The Foundation and the ICON exhibit will be open to us from 4 pm until 6 pm on Saturday the 9th of June following our Performance Driving School event.

Still haven’t signed up for our Performance Driving Event and a chance to see ICON: 50 Years of the 2002? Well, what in the heck are you waiting for?

TRSS: Tire Rack Street Survival - Teen Driving TrainingOur very own Tidewater Chapter of the BMW CCA will be hosting TRSS later this year. We will be needing volunteers for this event in order for it to be a success.

This is a great opportunity for the new teenage driver in your family to get a solid foundation on the road. The skills they will learn can help keep them safe, plus it’s a lot of fun! Mark your calendars and plan for a day filled with excitement and learning behind the wheel for your teenager.

Date set for the 3rd week in September. Mark your calendars for September 16th.

There will be more info to follow in the next issue of Das Kummet.

Is Winter ever going to end??? Apparently for those who attended the first NASA event of the year, March Madness, the answer was no. I’ve only had the joy of racing in the snow at VIR a few other times; a Chump race several years ago where we had icicles on our pop ups, another NASA race right after they repaved the track, and the weekend of 3/4/18.

VIR doesn’t allow snowplows on the track, so they have another, more interesting way to clear the snow. Drive on it. We literally assemble every car, truck, tow vehicle, whatever we can get, and do laps until the snow has turned into slush. Then it’s just a matter of praying for sun. By 11 the fog had lifted, the snow had melted and we were back in business. By the time we raced on Sunday the track was fully dry and most of the 3 inches had already melted from the grass. Now that doesn’t mean it wasn’t still slippery on the grass, it was, and several folks took some pretty long off track excursions.

Saturday’s race was tough, it had just started to drizzle about 10 minutes before the race, and several folks were really on the fence about whether or not to run rain tires. I made the wrong choice, and didn’t. Talk about slick, wow! A cold rainy track is no place for Hoosier R7’S it was impossible to get the car to turn, and if you did chances are it would keep turning, 360 style. Ask me how I know; my “not so smooth” downshift in turn 3 generated a beautiful on track pirouette. Fortunately I was by myself.

Even though with the snow, Sunday provided a day with bbetter track conditions. One of my fellow GTS3 racers, Sanjeeve Dugal, had an issue with his engine, so it was just down to me and Charles Harding. In a NASCAR style draft, I was just able to slide by Charles at the very end of the race. Beat him by .005 seconds (about 1.5 feet). It was awesome! Ted Ambrose, ran ST3, Don Bryant (welcome back) kicked butt in Spec 944, and Mike Helpinstill had a great time in Spec e46.

I hope to see you out there, and I’m sure I’ll be complaining about the heat before you know it!

Photo Ops DriveBy James Loriol and Al Resnick

“I left work at 8:30 in the morning after pulling 24 hr duty (yes I got a bit of sleep), getting home and taking a shower. Then rushing out the door to jump into my favorite M3 and it’s sleek curves, I drive off to have some fun and see some friends at this year’s photo ops drive! We meet up, talk about our beauties, admire the beautiful weather we have blessed upon us, and then drive off to go down Colonial Drive, when we stop picture our cars at a beautiful riverside view looking over the James river.

Then we zoomed off and into the backroads, twisting and leaning into one corner and into the next, having fun and putting smiles on everyone’s faces to our next stop at Littlecreek Dam, for our second photo stop.

After that scenic drive through the Virginia Peninsula countryside, we then ended at the Gabriel Archer Tavern of the Williamsburg Winery. Not only were adult beverages (wine and beer) first rate, but our luncheon meals were exceptionally tasty and well prepared – all topped with some great Bimmer conversations, having enjoyed the pleasure of exercising our German Ultimate Driving Machines!

Thanks to everyone who participated for a terrific event!

LOOK!

LIFETIME FILLby Brad Purvis

People a lot smarter than me have weighed in on this issue and you can read about it in just about every enthusiast magazine. Before major manufacturers came up with “free service” or “lifetime service” when you buy a new car, every fluid was scheduled to be changed at some point in time during the “life” of the car. Free service is nothing more than a marketing ploy and in order to make it affordable (for them, not you), manufactures came up with the “lifetime/sealed” transmission, differential, brakes, cooling system, etc., etc. Nothing could be more misleading. Yes, fluids, oils, et al, have improved immensely, especially with the introduction of synthetics; however, even they don’t last forever, or even for a lifetime. Simply put, manufacturers don’t care once the car runs out of warranty. They know their best customers trade their cars every couple

of years and once the warranty runs out they have no obligation whatsoever. In most cases, you can run a car 100,000 miles on the same transmission fluid and you will not be aware that anything is deteriorating within the unit itself and in all likelihood it will operate just fine. The problem is if you want to keep a car well beyond 100,000 miles. It’s hard to say when the fluid

will fail, but it will fail eventually, and as it fails your transmission will wear

at an ever accelerating rate and it too will fail at some point. Therefore, if you plan on keeping your Bimmer forever or for a “lifetime” then you most certainly should change the fluids, all of them and at regular intervals. If you buy a used BMW with something north of 60,000 miles do it as a matter of course straight away. A $125-$250 transmission service is cheap insurance compared to a $7,500 transmission. That’s just my opinion and I could be wrong.
