Jacaranda 2018 T2 Week 10 Maybe there’s more than one hundred? - Lola We use a variety of bins to sort our rubbish and waste in an eort to be as sustainable as possible and teach the importance of this practice. This includes saving our yoghurt tops to reuse them in the children’s collage and construction work. Our ‘yoghurt top jar’ in particular was getting very full so we decided to count how many we have collected. First we invited the children to guess the quantity… How many yoghurt tops do we think there are? Sophia: One hundred. Lola: Maybe there’s more than one hundred? Izzy: Fifty five. Sienna: Sixty. Greyson: One hundred. Isla: Twenty. Will: One thousand. Fletcher: One thousand. Harry: Seven. Edward: Seven. Ivy: Twenty One. Milla: Twenty Two. Ashton: Three. Billy: Twenty One. Lola: Up to the end. Lachie: Twenty Two. We counted all the yoghurt tops until we reached… 134! That’s a lot of yoghurt! This led to a conversation about recycling and reusing… Milla: Sometimes you can make things out of rubbish. Miss Keir: I can remember Billy used our yoghurt tops to make something, what did you make Billy? Billy: I made a lollipop and Isabelle helped me. Miss Keir What could we turn this into? (an empty Yakult container) Milla: A hat. Will: A T Rex. Isabelle: A princess. Isla: A mermaid. Fletcher: A superhero. Greyson: A bunny. Lola: A unicorn. Billy: You can turn it into a builder. Finley: A person. Milla: You could even turn it into a castle. Edward: Turns to a big, big St Leonard’s. Sienna: A big house. Ivy: A cat or a dog. Ashton: A big bear. Ashton: A crocodile. Sophia: A mermaid or a princess. Liam: A tree. Experiences such as these are rich in learning, as the “whole group” structure develops communication skills, whilst also strengthening children’s concentration and understanding of key numeracy concepts. Encouraging children to think creatively about simple materials leads to development of critical thinking and problem solving skills.

withMrsHardingYou may have noticed a beautiful terrarium in our room recently. This was the work of Mrs Harding and the Jacaranda gardeners. Utilising her knowledge of plants, Mrs Harding guided the children to gradually add the various layers needed for the plants to thrive within their small glass home. Since planting each piece, the children have demonstrated great care by regularly watering the terrarium

and observing any changes they notice to the soil and plants.
