Dear members of our school community,

As a result of Golden Week, we look back on a relatively short month for April but a very

rich and diverse month in terms of activities. In studies of successful schools it is not only the

curriculum, teaching competencies, leadership, or parent involvement but the outcome. It is

asked ‘What is the outcome of all the endeavours of a school?

If you had had the opportunity to see the Exhibition of Grade 5/6, you will see self

confident, reflective and determined students. They strove to account for their own learning by

demonstrating self responsibility and consequently exhibited extraordinary outcomes. Although

I am still new in this school for not being impressed, about our pupils performances. I am sure,

you are all aware, good schools have great teachers. A great school is more than having the

best resources it is the teachers and other staff who make the difference. The Exhibition marked

teachers and parents involvement, encouragement and facilitating student learning to make a successful Exhibition.

It was my first ‘Hanami’ and to be honest, I had no Idea why the blossoms were such a big deal. In Germany I had been

living in an area with many cherry trees. They carry cherries as well. In Germany, people are more concerned about the

product (cherries) than the blossoms. I have started to like the idea of appreciating the moment of blossoms and knowing they

will fade away. It makes us become much more aware of these precious moments and reflect on the schools connection to this

special season. If you carefully read the newsletter, you will see, our school provides many, many precious moments. It shows

the Deutsche Schule Kobe makes a difference!!! It is convincing to be member of this school.

As you already know, the tax increase made it necessary to adjust the fee structure. You will see, we only made very

reasonable changes. There will be some other changes as well for next school year. We are happy to have already three new

promising teachers. Satya d’Armours started right after Golden Week to add personal power to Grade 1/2 because of growing

numbers. She will be our new teacher for a separate Grade 2. For Pre School we will have Aya Onishi and for Pre

Kindergarten Lee Hanae Ung. In the next newsletter you will get to know them better. We also decided to optimize our

Kindergarten with a maximum of 16 students. You will have the choice between these two programs. If there are more than 16

applicants for the Full Day program, we will have to decide according to a transparent policy. I wish you a beautiful start in to

Hello everyone! My name is Satya d'Amours and I

am happy to be joining Ms. Fukae to teach the grade

1/2 class in May and June. I was born and raised in

Sapporo, Hokkaido, but have lived in Victoria,

Canada for the past 8 years. I'm half Canadian and

half Japanese, and a native speaker of both English

and Japanese. My hobbies include photography and

exploring new places. For example, last year I visited

Singapore for the first time and I plan to travel to

India next winter. I have also lived in Jamaica where I

taught English.

I believe that children learn best through authentic

inquiry. With this in mind, I look forward to creating

a rich learning environment which fosters the natural

development of each child. I am so thankful for the

opportunity to work at DESK and can't wait to meet

and get to know all of the students and families!

Dear Deutsche Schule Kobe European School Community,

!We thank you for coming to the Great bake sale yesterday. We would like to give an extra thank you to parents

and teachers who prepared so much baking for us to sell. We raised more than 35,000 yen because of your help

and donations. We will use this money for building a school pond, a rainwater collection system, birdhouses for the

school yard, multi-use furniture made from reused materials and game improvement.

With your help, we raised enough money to continue our projects. You have helped so much to make our

Exhibition a success. Please come and see our Exhibition Presentation, on Friday, April 18th. We will present at

11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on April 18th, when you can see our work and how we used the money we raised

!Sincerely,

IBAP (IB Asia-Pacific) has been recently working closely together with The Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to implement the IB programmes more widely in Japan. As more and more Japanese people started to show their interest to learn about the IB/PYP programmes I held a small workshop at our school on the 4th of April. It was a short, one day introduction workshop to the PYP programme but the participants were all actively involved with the learning. After the workshop, they toured around the school and expressed their admiration for our students’ learning and its environment at our school. I was very proud and also pleased to feel that our school was able to contribute to educate our wider community in Kansai area. Hiroko White

Planting Sweetcorn with the

Early Years. The students had

the opportunity to plant

Sweetcorn in the Raised garden

bed. They prepared the soil first

the dug hole to plant the

Sweetcorn. Eventfully, bean

plants will be planted near the

sweetcorn and be able to use

them to support their growth.

This is a growing system called

the ‘three sisters’. Lastly we will

plant a pumpkin or squash

plant the should stop the weeds

growing.

This style of planting was used

by the native people in the

America’s.

The

Exhibition is

an essential rite

of passage for

children in the final year

of the Primary Years

Programme. The Exhibition is

meant to be a chance for children

to show their strengths as a learner

before leaving the Programme.

The Grade 5/6 class begin their

journey toward the Exhibition

identifying issues in their

community where they would

like to inquire and take

action. The issue is of local

interest to the students but

should be an issue

common to people

around the world. Once

an issue is selected, the

students build their own

unit around their issue.

As members of a community, we have

the potential to create environments that exhibit our

creativity, identity and values !Lines of Inquiry

How we manage space in communities

Effects of well managed environments

This

year, the

Grade 5/6

class focused on

the use of space and

how they could take

action to improve the way

space is used around us. Over the

course of the Exhibition, the students

composed music, created reusable, space

efficient furniture, a rainwater tank system for

the school, improved games for the Sport

curriculum, bird houses for local birds around the school

grounds and a school pond. In addition to this, the students

carried out detailed research, data work and several written

documents to support their action. For the full six weeks, the entire

class worked tirelessly and diligently. The results of their work will benefit

the school and give the Grade 5/6 class the confidence that can only come

through such a large and independent undertaking. We are lucky to have such

hard working and responsible students in our school community."

!

!Low T Ball!

Grade 1 & 2 just started learning Tennis during P.E.. They play Low-T-Ball, which is a kind of

beginner version of tennis. One of the main rules is hitting the ball UNDER the net. The

benches and blocks on the side keeps the ball in a small range. Those circumstances make

it is easier to play for the students.

For the Indian people, caps are the most essential item when it comes to protecting themselves from the winter cold. (Most people are barefoot even in the coldest months.) The many caps you donated were tremendously appreciated, as also the sweaters, jackets, long trousers, etc.!

The highlight of the event was obviously the arrival of the box with books and toys. The children couldn’t wait to unpack the many novelties: Colorful illustrated and fun to read English books (most of them from the DESK!), wooden toys, and puzzles (a first time discovery for the kids!). The children instantly picked up the books and immersed themselves in reading..

Your Donations for the Primary School of Shivpura, India Dear Parents and Children of the DESK, on behalf of the Primary School of Shivpura and Gram Bharati Samiti (GBS) I would like to extend a sincere thank you for your generous donations of used clothes, books, toys and cash. Together with donations collected through the Kobe Union Church and Canadian Academy, we were able to send a total of 6 boxes with warm clothes for children and adults and 1 box with books and toys to Shivpura (Rajasthan, India). Without the support of the DESK community, we wouldn’t have been able to send so many children clothes and books! A big “thank you“ to all of you! In January, all (!) boxes arrived safely at the office of GBS in Jaipur, after a long journey by ship from Kawasaki to Calcutta, and from there another 1500 km over land to Jaipur. The donations where then taken by car to the village of Shivpura. At a school festivity for the Indian Republic Day on January 23, they were personally distributed by the school principal under the supervision of Ms. Sarita Yogi of GBS.

The principal and teacher of the school personally selected and fitted the clothes to make sure that the distribution was fair and everyone received their share of warm clothing in the right size. The event in the school courtyard resembled almost a fashion show…

While the warm clothes are stored away until the next winter the children enjoy the books and toys day by day. These are usually

kept in the “almirah”, the traditional Indian wall niche. A sign on the wall reminds of the donors from Kobe. By the way, the almirah

is a place of honor, which is also decorated with pictures of the Indian fighters for independence!

The children are particularly fond of the jigsaw puzzles, as they have never played with jigsaw puzzles before (toys are generally

a rarity for rural children). They quickly learned how to assemble the pieces and are meanwhile real jigsaw masters! Much to the

frustration of the teachers who are always beaten by the children in puzzle asembling .. !I hope you have enjoyed these pictures. Maybe some of you have even

discovered their clothes or books? For more pictures, please have a look at the slideshow at: !http://www.evkobe.org/deutsch/hilfe-für-indien/

Again, thank you so much for your generous support.
