This is the important culmination of a student’s studies and pulls prior learning and experience together, into a major piece of personal research. It enables students to demonstrate proficiency in relation to scoping the issue(s)/problems, consideration of appropriate literature, collection and analysis of data, assessing the financial implications, including any cost/benefit analysis for justifying specific recommendations and consideration of implementation issues. Although final submission of the Project is at the end of the course, throughout your study of each module you will undertake preparatory work to ensure that the Project is integrated into your learning. Students are supported to produce a high-quality report which often proves very valuable to individual students and also employers.

To prepare the student to undertake the project, the following research method topics are initially addressed: before the project is undertaken:• Project profiling • Using quantitative data collection and analysis techniques• Business writing and presentations • Entrepreneurship• Reviewing the literature • Developing business plans• Developing interviewing and observation skills • Doing consulting projects

The project is guided by a supervisor and can take several forms such as:• Project for a host/client organisation• The solution to a practical managerial or organisational problem, where practical recommendations arise out of a mix of theory and data collection• A work-based issue within the student’s own place of employment• An empirical investigation of a management or organisational practice, strongly supported by the relevant theory and concepts

Aims:

Applied Project (60 credits)

Business Transformation Project (30 credits)

A challenging high level strategic dissertation undertaken with your sponsor company or with a focus of your choice if you are self-funding. This is one of the most exciting parts of the course for many students as you apply your learning to your particular interests. The Project is all about the transition from theory to real-life execution.

Under the guidance of senior members of the Middlesex University Business School, participants will analyse key contemporary global energy related business challenges and be expected to develop innovative and effective solutions.

The project will incorporate many of the management lessons learnt during the course with key real life challenges and lay a thorough foundation for your future career progression. Although final submission of the Project is at the end of the course, throughout your study of each module you will undertake preparatory work to ensure that the Project is integrated into your learning.

Whilst there is no set syllabus, the applied Business Transformation Project is your opportunity to study and research a specific organisation area or topic in-depth. The main focus of this is as a piece of ‘action research’ where the organisation or industry could directly benefit from your planned intervention, using appropriate methods of research and change management.

Tuition is tailored to your specific needs as agreed with the academic supervisor on the basis of your proposal. You will be expected to be familiar with the theory and empirical research in your chosen area of study, and to demonstrate your ability to review and apply the concepts and techniques critically.

You will also be expected to demonstrate proficiency in the selection and application of the appropriate methods to investigate and progress the Business Transformation Project.

Investigation may involve case study analysis, comparative study relative to sector norms, and/or questionnaire or interview-based study.

The research may take one of several forms, for example:

• An investigation of a management or organisational practice, strongly supported by reference to the relevant theory and concepts• The research and design of a solution of a practical managerial or organisational problem, where practical recommendations arise out of the mix of

theory and data collection• A project for a host/client organisation• A work-based issue within the individual’s own place of employment

By becoming an expert in your chosen dissertation topic, you will have also enhanced your future career path. With a carefully chosen and thoroughly researched project, the specialist insight gained becomes the catalyst for your next step after completing the MBA and a solid basis for your career advancement.

Facilitating the learning processThe course modules are made available to you following a schedule that allows you to work at your own pace but to keep in sequence with the learning and assessment requirements. Each module is broken into a series of units, which generally will take about a week each to complete. The format of each unit is based on a conceptual structure, known by the acronym SCATE (Scope, Content, Activities, Thinking, Extra):

Scope – The overall range of the material covered in the unit. This sets out the learning outcomes for the unit, and therefore assists in planning how you tackle the material. It is always useful to refer back to the learning outcomes at the end of each unit’s work to evaluate progression. This also helps link together material from different units and modules.

Content – The detailed content of the material to be learnt in the unit. In many cases the study guide helps you navigate through material provided in a set text.

Activities – Exercises and application activities that consolidate comprehension of the content, and help you to evaluate and synthesise connections with the realities of professional managerial experience. Some of these will be collaborative.

Thinking – Helps develop the depth that is required for Masters level learning. There are online discussions and related collaborative and reflective work to encourage you to think about your own development, and how you can absorb what you have learnt so that it allows you be more effective as a manager. This is a personal aspect of learning and therefore will vary from individual to individual.

Extra – Additional exercises and learning materials, some based on additional packages provided with set text, will be available for you to continue to reinforce and extend your understanding and application of the content you encounter in each unit.

Putting your learning into a personal perspectiveAn MBA is more than an educational programme – it is also a management development programme. As the course progresses you will find that your perspective on your role, on your managerial challenges, and on your career will be ever more contextualised. This will inevitably change the way you work as a professional manager.

AssessmentTo successfully complete the programme you must pass each module and the Business Transformation Project or Applied Project. Individual module assessment will incorporate written coursework, online assessment and individual and group projects. Participation through the virtual learning environment with tutors and fellow students is compulsory and assessed in order to encourage regular contributions by all students.

There will not be any examinations requiring physical attendance at a venue. We will, however, have certain online tests in some modules. Assessments are carefully designed to reflect business management and industry issues and assist in applying your learning to your company or individual focus.

FeesFinancing your studyThere are many funding options ranging from educational loans and career development loans to scholarships and corporate sponsorship that may be open to you. Many part-time MBA students are sponsored by their companies, whilst others decide to self-finance the course as they prefer to keep their future options open. By far the most popular MBA financing method is an education or career loan available from grant awarding organisations or commercial banks.

It is strongly advised that potential applicants research all available financing options well in advance of submitting their application as many funding sources have strict deadlines for seeking funding. Countries often have their own grant or scholarship awarding bodies which may either be government, commercial or charitable in nature.

A key feature of these processes is the input from external subject experts who ensure that awards of Middlesex are comparable to those of other UK universities, and that the programme curriculum, teaching, assessment and resources are appropriate.

Middlesex University, and its programmes, are subject to periodic audit or review by external quality agencies such as the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA). These audits and reviews place confidence in the quality and standards of provision as operated at Middlesex University. Of course, you may choose to interact with tutors, syndicate members and module leaders at any time using the online communication systems, and you will be encouraged to do so regularly.

Will there be any on-campus seminars or residential workshops? No. The MBA Global Energy Management is unique in that it requires absolutely no travel or attendance at on-site seminars or residential workshops. All the course content, syndicate discussions, networking and assessment is managed online.

Will I be guaranteed a job when I graduate?Guarantees are unrealistic. However you will certainly be in a more advantageous position as an MBA graduate is often viewed far more favourably by employers. Middlesex MBA graduates are very successful in progressing to higher achieving careers. Additionally, as this MBA is delivered by part-time distance learning, you will not have had to take time out from your current job in order to undertake your study, thus allowing you to gain valuable experience as you learn.
