• Learn details of infrastructure– Network, Hardware, Software,
Organization, Users
• Customization details– Customize OS to serve needs to of the
user
• Testing– Test environment and pilot program
• Rollout– Project plan
2
Deployment Tools
• Microsoft Deployment Solution Accelerator Note: new, renamed version replaced Business Desktop Deployment Solution 2007 (BDD) in December 2007
• Brings together best practices and deployment tools • Guidance, sample templates, and technology
files (such as scripts and configuration files)• Tools: Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT),
Windows User State Migration Tool (USMT), Windows Automated Installation Kit (Windows AIK), Windows Deployment Services, and Windows PE 2.0
3
Hardware Assessment
• Hardware Assessment Tool– Windows Vista Hardware
Assessment tool• Collects inventory and checks compatibility
• Minimum Requirements– 800Mhz processor for faster, 512MB RAM, sVGA (800 x 600 resolution)
capable video adapter, 20GB hard disk / 15Gb free, CD-ROM drive
• Vista Premium Requirements (can run Aero graphics interface)
– Differences from minimum requirements: Aero-capable video adapter (GPU supports DirectX 9 or later, WDDM driver), 1GHz or faster processor, 1GB RAM, 40GB dish space / 15GB free, DVD-ROM drive
4
Software Considerations
• Application Compatibility– Vista constrains access to the system for
security– Windows Vista Compatibility Mode
• Pre-configured for many applications
– Drivers for hardware and security software for previous versions least compatible
– Consider custom applications in a lab environment
• Use Windows Application Compatibility Toolkit– Checks against known software and assist in
planning tests for custom apps5
Deployment Methods
• Major installation types– In Place Upgrade
• Upgrade and keep settings and programs from previous version of Windows
– Clean Installation• Fresh copy of OS from DVD
– Image Deployment• Use deployment tools and create custom
image• Windows AIK• SIM
6
Migrating User Data
• Transfer User State Data– Maintains their settings an local data
• Easy Transfer Wizard – For one off transfers– Can use network, USB drive, or Ethernet
• User State Migration Tool (USMT) – For large migrations with proper planning– Can use enterprise resources such as file
shares and scripting
7
Imaging Tools
• Windows Imaging (WIM)– New to Vista
• Replaces old setup process based on CAB files
• Can be stored on any media, use anything bootable
– USB Keys, PXE boot from network
• Uses Windows PE– Basic environment to load OS and support
troubleshooting» Supports TCP/IP» Will run some Windows GUI programs» Supports Active Directory logons» Easier to access network resources
8
ImageX
• ImageX.exe - Command Line Tool– Mount, create, and modify images– Use in Windows or Windows PE– Command line switches
• /mount, /unmount, /append, etc
– Create image to apply to many computers
• Customized with drivers, software, and settings
9
Deployment Options
• Use the Network– Load image from a file share
• Windows Deployment server– Use PXE boot from BIOS and Windows
Deployment on Windows Server 2003/2008 to manage deployment in the enterprise
• DVD media• USB key drive
– Just load WIM image to USB key10
