    worlds oldest royal families.

McLeodganj later came under the rule of the British and was named so, after Sir Donald Friell McLeod, who wasthe Lieutenant Governor of Punjab of British India (1865 1870). Due to its elevation and thick forestcover, McLeodganj and its surrounding areas (Upper Dharamshala) are much cooler than its counterpart, LowerDharamshala.

McLeodganj, which still retains the old colonial charm, is a popular destination in Himachal Pradesh as the town isfamous for Tibetan Buddhism, culture, art and crafts. McLeodganj is also a major shopping centre famous forsouvenirs like Tibetan handicrafts, thangkas, Tibetan carpets, garments, wooden masks, metal votive objects, paper drawings, beads, baubles, etc.

The vicinity of places like New Delhi and Chandigarh attract hordes of nature lovers and trekkers to McLeodganj.McLeodganj of Upper Dharamshala can be accessed by road and by rail. The nearest airport to McLeodganj is at

McLeod Ganj really is a lovely town to just wander around. This is the view looking along on eof the main streetswith the Chorten and Prayer Wheels housed on the structure with the ornate roof. There are many shops sellingsouvenirs and things - most of the Tibetan ones are fixed price with little room for bargaining but there are manythat are owned by Kashmiri families or people from other parts of India and hard bargaining is essential here!

By the time we reached McLeod Ganj my friend and I slowed our place down - so we didn't really get out to all ofthe smaller Gompas and Temples in the town, these are all listed in reputable guidebooks and some sounded quiteinteresting. Instead we were content to sit in the sun a lot and just soak up the atmosphere of the place as wewandered around.

Directions:Take either of the main streets when they split at the Bus/Taxi stand - they will meet up again nearwhere temple road head downhill or you can cross between them at the Chorten (turning Mani Wheels as youpass!)

A little history & What all to see...Dharamshala has been a cantonment since the British era and the home to 1st Gorkha Rifles (one of the regimentsto have had the honors of being decorated with "Param Vir Chakra" which is India's highest military decorationawarded for the highest degree of valour or self-sacrifice in the presence of the enemy).

Its a small quite town and a popular hill station with a very small list of sites to be covered. It's a place where onecan stay for days and roam around and relax and look for peace of mind from the bustling city life. It is dividedinto Upper and Lower Dharamshala (aka McLeod Ganj). The main market would make you feel that it's surely avery small town but then it has all the good restaurants and bakeries and a lovely market to roam around.

Drinking Kashmiri Chai in the restaurant courtyardby lachydragon

My friend and I checked out so many hotels in McLeod Ganj before we decided on the HimQueen Annexe butthis one was the next highest on our shortlist! Run by the lively Amin - a young guy how lived in Kashmir andmoved to Dharamshala a few years ago the rooms are bright and sunny and spotlessly clean. The big advantagewas that you could get a double with private bathroom and shared front balcony for Rs150 (low season - see mytip about accommodation seasons in Dharamshala)!! There is also a restaurant in the guesthouse with a prettygood menu and fantastic Kashmiri Chai - with good company, Amin is happy to show you his albums of Kashmirand trips that he has done with guests up there.

The only drawback was that to reach the hotel you have a pretty steep walk down the steps that run off from nearthe post-office on Jogibara Rd. If we wern't a bit hung-over from all the travelling and feeling a bit more energeticit would be a wonderful place to stay. Also the rooms looks straight up onto the most beautiful mountains and thatis the big benefit of its orientation - that you get the mountain and not valley views. All-in-all a highlyrecommended place to stay if you are feeling fit and are after some beautiful views!

Comparison:less expensive than averageDirections:Down the stairs that run off from the left of Jogibara road if you are walking down from the mainstreet - just after the post office. Situated at one end of the busy market in Mcleodganj, the Tsuglagkhang Templeis the abode of the Tibetanspiritual leader, Dalai Lama. All parts of the temple are open to the public besides the monks residences. Themonastery offers a delightful insight into Tibetan art and culture. With elegant paintings adorning the walls andresonating soothing prayer hymns, tranquillity is not too far away. You can stroll around the prayer area, spend afew moments meditating or just spend a few minutes with nature. If you are one of the lucky ones, you may evenreceive the blessing of Dalai Lama(if he is visiting). Stroll around the beautiful monastery and experience absolutequiet and peace. The monastery also houses a bookshop where you can purchase some essential books on Tibetanculture and memoirs, a cafe and a museum offering umpteen souvenirs. The real nerve centre of the town, theDalai Lamas residence with his private office and temple, blends effortlessly into the landscape. True to the Dalai

Lamas principles of not disturbing nature, the elegant two-storeyed temple with its large square overlooking hispalace a modest cottage, where he lives with his cats and flowers was built without chopping a single tree. The temple rests on some unusual columns: trunks of deodars that are still growing, protected by adjustable ironrings. The principal image here is a gilded Buddha rising 9 ft from a lotus seat. To its right, facing in the directionof Tibet, are 12-foot images of Padmasambhava and Avalokiteshvara. The temple is said to be a replica of theoriginal in Lhasa, lovingly carved by exiled Tibetan craftsmen. At least one of the images, the 11-headedAvalokitesvara, dates back to the 7th century CE, when a Tibetan king first installed it in the central cathedral atLhasa. After the Chinese ransacked the cathedral, pious Tibetans recovered parts of the face from the streets andsmuggled it into India in 1967. These bits were incorporated into the new image and consecrated in 1970. There isalso a wooden pulpit from where the Dalai Lama delivers his sermons. The temple is a haven. Stand at any cornerand be dazzled by the breathtaking views of the mountains.

Trekking to Triund is a must for those who are really in love with the Himalayas. Not a difficult one if youre usedto trekking, you can reach the top in 3-4 hours (I took 5!). Once there, you can soak in uninterrupted views of theDhauladhar range. You can stay at Triund for a night or two. There are two shacks, a Himachal government resthouse and a two room facility available there starting from INR 500 a room. You can also pitch a camp up there ifits not bitterly cold. Theres no running water or power here, so gear up for an unadulterated thrilling adventure.

Travel Tip Rather than staying at the government rest house or the tiny shacks, you can better go for the tworoom facility. It has neat rooms and a well stacked kitchen. The caretaker here cooks the most wholesome foodcompared to the other two. Plus, the place also has solar lamps.

Travel Tip Carry just water and clothes if you intend to stay at the top. Food, snacks, water are all available atthe shacks up there, albeit at higher prices.

This marks the endof tree line in the region and takes you till a tiny lake thats mostly frozen in winters. A trek of around an hourfrom Triund will get you here. While you can do Triund and Snow Line yourself, taking a guide is a must for trekking up the Indrahar Pass. As they (read I) say, theres no better way of exploring this town and its surroundings other than a motorbike. While you can have a taxi as well, my vote goes to making your own route map and finding your own way. Allthat you need to shell out is INR 1000 for a Royal Enfield (350 cc) and INR 800 for a Baja Pulsar (usually 150cc) for a day. Some bargaining is likely to bring the price down. So kick start your time at Mcleodganj in the wayits meant to be, and off you go on the meandering hill roads.
