De’Von M. Brown

Sponsored by the ACPA Speaker Grant

De’Von M. Brown is a 21-year-old young man and Bal)more city na)ve, who was

labeled as one of Bal)more’s at-risk youth sta)s)cs. De’Von struggled with having

Program Session One

Undergraduate Case Study Compeon

Chris)ne Krieger, Goucher College

Lorrie Budd, Community College of Bal)more County

Joshua Hiscock, University of Maryland—College Park

Room 210/230

The undergraduate case study compe))on is an opportunity to work together on a

challenge that many student leaders face and present and oral response to a panel of

student affairs professionals. Prizes will be awarded for the presenta)on team that

comes in first place.

Mission: Graduate Prep: Understanding and finding the ways for graduate

program success Room 302 Timothy Y. Chin, Goucher College

Allison J. Walker, Nova Southeastern University

Our approach to this presenta)on will be to provide a framework for par)cipants who

are interested in the profession and have the opportunity to learn from a new

professional and second year graduate student. We will use our personal insight and

addi)onal research to help par)cipants looking to enter a graduate prepara)on degree

program.

The Next Genera)on Conference, simply referred to as Next Gen, will be held Saturday

and Sunday, March 24-25, 2012 prior to the start of the ACPA 2012 Louisville

Conven)on.

Next Gen is a unique opportunity for approximately 100 undergraduates to learn about

careers in student affairs. Par)cipants will meet and learn from current graduate

students, graduate prepara)on program faculty, and seasoned student affairs

professionals who work at a variety of colleges and universi)es. This is a great way to

explore the profession and gather informa)on you need to plan your future.

Program Session Two

Backpacks to Briefcases: How to Succeed While Moving from a Student to a

Professional Room 210/230 Lindsey Henderson, McDaniel College

Many students struggle moving from textbook learning to applying material from the

classroom to the fluid, real world professional workplace. Preparing them for this

transi)on will help them thrive and feel confident in the skill sets necessary to stay

afloat in this new environment. This presenta)on will outline the skills that

employer’s value most from early graduates, professionalism in the workplace and

the informal skill sets that will help a new graduate through their first several months

in a posi)on.

What's Next? A Conversaon on Transioning from Undergrad to

Professional Room 261 Mary Wahl, Goucher College

Kasey Quinn, Goucher College

Reflec)ng upon their own experiences, Kasey Quinn and Mary Wahl will present on

their paths of entering the field of higher educa)on. Using engaging games and

thought-provoking exercises, Kasey and Mary will encourage undergraduate students

to incorporate flexibility into their plans as they transi)on into the professional world.

The presenta)on explains how higher educa)on provides a solid founda)on for many

career paths and leads to surprising new career ideas.

Creang the Next Generaon of Student Affairs Professionals Room 270 Edward Wright, Mount St. Mary's University

Christopher Wild, Mount St. Mary's University

Many ins)tu)ons u)lize student leaders to help manage everything from the day-to-

day opera)ons to large scale events. Through a strong development program,

student leaders rise to next level, gaining the ability to grow and mature. This also

results in stronger paraprofessionals who feel responsible for and take pride in their

role at the ins)tu)on. This session will explore, how one office transforms its

student leaders and gives them the experiences to easily transi)on into new

professional staff members.

Do you keep hearing about professional associaons, but you're not sure

what they are? Professional associa)ons are smaller groups of individuals within the larger profession

of student affairs. Associa)ons may be based on type of interest, region or

division. Consider joining a professional associa)on in your field(s) of interest - or at

least check out its website. While not all associa)ons have membership op)ons for

undergraduates, many may be willing to help you find a mentor in your field of

interest. As of 2011, ACPA's undergraduate membership is just $29 per year.

News, blogs, twi$er - O, My! Blogs and higher educa)on news websites can be a great way to figure out from

different perspec)ves both what's going on and what it's like to work in the field of

student affairs.
