Dear MDBC members and friends,

As the Honorary Treasurer in the MDBC Board of Directors, I should live up to the expectation and talk about numbers & figures. Although I agree that financials are key to any organization whether for profit or for non-profit, there is more to measure then P&L. As in previous years, Marco & his team did achieve break even. In short, our main revenue pillars are; memberships (50%), Student Internship Program (SIP) (30%) and advertisements & Premium Partners (13%). Which brings me to the other numbers: members & events. As every year-end, we have lost some members in 2012, which is natural attrition, but most importantly we ended the year with more members than ever: the official end-of-year count was 196, but with the new additions who joined for 2013 we have remained our total membership base above 210. And to have all these members meet & greet other members (we are after all a networking organization), the MDBC

organizes events. 2012 counted for 32 events in greater KL & 7 in Penang, a compilation of MDBC-organized events together with all other invites from our partners and business community. Again more than in 2011.

All in all growth is all around us, but is growth the only parameter? In my opinion it is not, so although numbers are key, I am convinced quantity goes hand-in-hand with quality. And quality is what we as the MDBC board of directors have been discussing lately. 2013 kicked off with two high quality events: the breakfast meeting “Outlook 2013” at MIDA on 29 January with CEO-level speakers of MIDA, Unilever, Nielsen, RBS, TMF and TalentCorp. A short, to-the-point early-morning event, with more corporates attending than usual. And our highlight of the first quarter: the MDBC New Year’s Reception. To celebrate Dato’ Jaffar Indot’s chair of 10 years and the new (lunar) year. Next to the MDBC Sustainability Awards, the NY reception

AFTER ANOTHER FINANCIALLY SOLID YEAR:

IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT NUMBERS AND QUANTITY, 2013 FOCUS WILL BE ON QUALITY

is traditionally the best attended event of the year with a large part of our membership attending, resulting in a perfect networking opportunity. And that’s our focus for 2013: perfect networking opportunities and not by quantity, having as much members attending, but by quality: having more special targeted events.

HONORARY TREASURER DATIN SANDRA VAN HELLEMOND

Sustainability Involves all / EarTh hOUr 2013: Uniting People to Protect the Planet.MDBC and InterContinental Kuala Lumpur teamed up this year in celebration of Earth Hour: Uniting People to Protect the Planet. In conjunction with Earth Hour activities, MDBC held our second edition of the informative and practical “Sustainability Involves All” session on the morning of 19 March.

Comprising of 1/3 talks, 1/3 panel discussion and 1/3 roundtable conversations with the invited speakers and WWF representatives, the event presented the following topics and speakers: * Green Building Index: Ir TL Chen of the Malaysian Green Building Council* Collapse of the Carbon Market and What’s Coming Next: Mathias Varming of YTL Corporation* Green Reporting: Datuk Hew Lee Lam Sang and Kasturi Nathan of KPMG Risk Consulting * Sustainability - Looking Beyond the Green in Community Partnerships: Brian Lariche of Lariche Community.

Chen highlighted the increase in GBI certified projects over the past few years, and the projected savings for buildings

once these have reached a certain GBI category.

Varming provided an understanding of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and why the Carbon Markets collapsed. He then focused on what China, Japan and Australia are still doing to support emission reduction projects, and the options available to Malaysia.

Kasturi explained that embracing green reporting makes good business sense for companies as it reduces environmental risks, creates positive PR and makes companies more attractive to customers, investors and to its own employees.

Lariche took a step-by-step approach on both the impact and the strategy of linking your corporation to society in order to achieve sustainable development, which consists of economic growth, environmental protection and social equality.

In our next edition we will include a write-up and pictures of our actual Earth Hour activities.

TNT Express Malaysia, a leading global express delivery company, announced the opening of the company’s 11th depot in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia.

The announcement was made by the Managing Director of TNT Express Malaysia and Brunei, Chong Siang Chung at an exclusive media appreciation event. Equipped with TNT Malaysia’s state-of-the-art tracking technology, the new depot worth more than RM2.7 million will now be able to provide international and parcel express delivery to and from more than 200 countries to businesses in Sabah in general, and KK in particular.

“Sabah is experiencing enormous growth in various industries ranging from oil & gas, tourism, service segment and other downstream industries which is also leading to a steep rise in the demand for express delivery and logistics services,” Chong said.

“Businesses in Sabah will now have direct access to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, which serves as one of TNT’s main international gateways. They will also have indirect access to the main international hubs in Asia and Europe through TNT’s well-phased road-air connectivity networks – the Asia air network, the Asia Road Network and the European Air Network,” he continued.

This announcement is good news not only for TNT customers in Kota Kinabalu but for the region as well.

“At TNT Malaysia, we are committed to investing and growing both the East Malaysia and West Malaysia markets. This investment demonstrates our long-term confidence in, and commitment to the Malaysian economy and its businesses, in general and Sabah in particular,” Chong concluded.

Held at Jarrod & Rawlins in Bangsar on 21 February, the Montpelier Whiskey tasting event had one main goal: Raising awareness and money for the National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM). Attendees had the opportunity to sample through the Glen Grant Whiskies sponsored by Sunrise Whiskies while enjoying J&R’s canapés and buffet.

For the group of 60 expats and locals, consisting of clients, staff and guests of Montpelier Malaysia, this was an excellent chance to mingle, making this event a very casual and relaxed evening out.

After the whiskey tasting, the bar was open to the public and networking opportunities continued. With a lot of fun and laughter, the event raised RM 2000 in ticket sales, which were handed over to NCSM by Denis Dimond Rawlins of Jarrod & Rawlins.

an InSIDE LOOK

an InSIdE look:

aIr franCE / klm - EStEE nG

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines was founded in 1919, making it the world’s oldest airline still operating under its original name. In 2004, Air France and KLM merged to form AIR FRANCE / KLM (AFKL). The merger produced the strongest European airline group based on two powerful brands and hubs – Amsterdam Airport Schipol and Paris Charles de Gaulle. Retaining its own identity, the group focuses on three core businesses: passenger transport, cargo and aircraft maintenance. KLM serves all its destinations using a modern fleet and employs over 33,000 people around the world. It is a leader in the airline industry, offering reliable operations and customer oriented products resulting from its policy of enthusiasm and sustainable innovation. KLM is a member of the global SkyTeam airline alliance, offering customers an ex-tensive worldwide network.

Led by AFKL Country Manager Estee Ng, the small, friendly and more than capable team here in Malaysia is a close knit and unified one due to her guidance and leader-ship by example. Always on the go, with multiple things clamoring for her attention constantly, this unassuming and approach-able woman from humble origins is a Ma-laysian native from the small town of Raub, Pahang. The 6th of 7 children, she comes from a hard working but happy family that didn’t have a lot growing up and usually worked during school holidays to help the family make ends meet. She has accom-plished an amazing amount so far through hard work and her refusal to acknowledge traditional barriers; it leaves anyone who has ever met her wondering how much more she will accomplish by the next time they meet.

MDBC: How long have you been with KLM and how did you get started?Estee: I never thought about working in the industry when I was younger. It wasn’t until one of my neighbors suggested work-ing for a travel agency and shared some of the places that she had been able to travel to through work that I gave it some con-sideration. It was during the break after my A levels exam so I went home, opened the telephone directory and picked the top three travel agencies with the biggest ads and approached them for jobs. I was in-vited for an interview by one of these agen-cies and they are, to this day, the ones I consider responsible for my being in this career. I walked in and told them that I wanted to be a tour leader. With no prior experience in the industry and without any

idea of what a tour leader was supposed to do, I asked for the job anyway.

The boss, who has since retired but whom I still keep in touch with, recollects fondly how he decided to take a chance and hire a gutsy and confident “greenhorn” by coun-tering with a travel consultant position; I would like to think that he is proud of how I turned out. I excelled there but after de-ciding that I had already learnt all I could at the position, it was time to move on for a new challenge and joined KLM in 1998 as a sales executive.

MDBC: Having worked your way up through the ranks, would you say that this gives you a definite advantage in your cur-rent position?Estee: I didn’t stay with KLM the entire time. After my initial 6 years with KLM there was no prospect of progressing fur-ther at that point so I decided to accept a job offer from Asiana Airlines who was looking for a Marketing Manager here in Malaysia. I was the only employee here as they were represented by a General Sales Agent and reported to the Singapore of-fice. It was a good move for me as it meant gaining and widening my industry contacts, comprehensive knowledge of the operations and gaining further experience especially as the route which I was working on was the Asian transpacific route which is differ-ent from the Europe transatlantic. Having started the introduction of Asiana to Ma-laysians, I worked closely with the Korean Tourism board which was based in Singa-pore to help them gain recognition locally; they kindly acknowledged my accomplish-ments with a recognition award from their Minister. I treasure the time that I had with them and it gave me invaluable hands on experience and knowledge which proved to be instrumental in my career progres-sion path.

In my 7th year with Asiana, the product was pretty established for the offline pas-senger product and stable cargo operation with colleagues who were handling that part of the business. When the Sales Man-ager retired and KLM offered me the posi-tion, I wholeheartedly accepted as I believe the blue has always been in my blood, as so many colleagues have fondly told me. Since then, there’s been no turning back.

The knowledge that I gained by start-ing something from the ground up, work-ing with various entities and coming up through the ranks gives me the knowledge

and experience I need to successfully guide my team. Whenever issues crop up, I can empathize and guide them by sharing my experiences. It enables me to workshop so-lutions with my team to ensure a successful outcome. The office here focuses mostly on Passenger flights so there is naturally an emphasis on sales. Industry intelli-gence and customer loyalty is important as it helps you in ensuring your sales revenue.

MDBC: The Malaysian Government has pushed for an increasing number of women in leadership positions but men are still openly favored for such positions. You have obviously overcome that difficulty. More-over, you are a woman in charge of a Eu-ropean multinational in an Asian country. How much of a challenge has this been? And what does this mean in terms creating the right corporate culture at AFKL Ma-laysia?Estee: There have been no real issues being a woman in a leadership position at AFKL. The management style of AFKL is to recog-nize the talent of its staff. Also, there are open companywide standard guidelines, such as policies related to work informa-tion and also service standards which all employees are subscribed to. It is system-atic with clear-cut policies and procedures in place which is standard European and it certainly makes it easy for communica-tion within the organization. Local staff also has their Collective Labour Agree-ment which specifies work benefits and rules. Locally, depending on the workload, some adjustments are made in view of the multi-cultural environment here in Ma-laysia. Also, we strongly encourage open communication. I always encourage it so my staff knows that they can always talk

an InSIDE LOOK

to me. In a way, I would say that the indi-vidual, the leader in charge is the one that sets the (right) corporate culture, not just the company guidelines.

MDBC: Europeans tend to focus more on work / life balance than Asians, whereas Asians tend to place more focus on work. How do you balance the two into something that creates a successful team?Estee: We all have our individual respon-sibilities, and while some are able to leave on the dot, others stay on to get their work done. The focus is on meeting your deliv-erable; I work with all of my team mem-bers to help them do this more efficiently. They are equipped with access to the work site even when away from the office, like at home or while travelling. Everyone is accountable and the priority is on deliver-ing the results, which for the main part is the establishment results where all have a shared responsibility. Also, we have a backup, buddy system in place. There is always someone around to take over in case of absences or emergencies as there are a great deal of multi-tasking in this small organization. It helps to create a stronger team. I always focus on having a unified team; I tell them that if one of us fails, we all fail. So the unity that we have makes us a successful organization. We have regular meetings where everyone is invited to participate and we update our latest establishment result which reflects to everyone that we are all working towards the same goal.

MDBC: In 2004, Air France and KLM went through a merger. By all accounts, this merger has gone well. How have you personally dealt with the merger and how

has this affected your team?Estee: The merger meant 2 very established and valuable brand names joining forces - when it happened there were 2 managers - one from KLM which was me and one from Air France, Patrick Low, of whom I have the highest regard as a respected industry veteran. He opted for early retirement so I took over the reins for the first co-located AFKL office. I decided early on that we had to embrace the change, to adapt and adopt the new processes which would come eventually - grab the bull by its horns as you may term it. As a leader, you have to change the mindset of your employees as you can imagine the questions and re-luctance to embrace new things at first, no matter how exciting it may seem. We were one of the first stations worldwide to be successfully and fully integrated. At that time, Air France was offline so we adopted 1 ticket stock for Malaysia, the KLM ticket for both AF and KL sales to simplify the process for the agents.

Of course, staff had to learn 2 different brands (Air France and KLM) which meant we had to know the product and technical specifics of both airlines instead of before, where staff only had to know all about one product - either AF or KLM. The staff takes their cue from the leaders so if you’re hesitant, they will be too.

From the start of the merger, the corpo-rate decision was that each was valuable in its own right as both has its own group of loyal customers, so both brands are sepa-rate even though it’s one company. With AFKL we can choose which brand we want to use to represent us in any given activity or market. The other thing to remember is that this was a merger, not a takeover. We have a dedicated work force who believes in what they do and it’s actually all about how you portray yourself to the market. For example, with the coming April online op-

erations of Air France in the local market, we will now have 2 distinct brands which we will use for specific activities including 2 different websites www.klm.com.my and www.airfrance.com.my, unlike before when we had only the KLM site as KL was the only online flight. People will always be more comfortable with one brand or the other so we don’t view Air France and KLM in competition with each other, but rather that we’re offering our customers more choices and more benefits as now there are 2 online hubs (Amsterdam and Paris) for passengers to choose from direct from KLIA (unlike before where Singapore was the nearest option for AF).

MDBC: What do you see as the future of the industry? Estee: No one airline can operate to every destination in the world, so code shares (which must be granted regulatory approv-al) are the future. If you can co–operate with a partner airline, synergize, then its ok. That’s why alliances are given promi-nence. Sometimes even with full loads, the operating cost where fuel is a major cost concern will not ensure your revenue is op-timal. The opportunities where possible to code share will become a common feature as this benefit will enable airlines to sell tickets even to destinations that they do not operate in (by using the resources of their codeshare partner).

For KLM, we cannot rest on our accom-plishments. We can leverage on our strengths but must continue to be innova-tive. We were the first to offer internet check-ins and were the first user of the CUSS kiosks at KLIA, offering mobile check in for our passengers. That push for innovation continues with the work we’re doing to reduce CO2 emissions with the use of biofuel, our waste to energy programs and many other CSR initiatives.

eu / euMCCiThe European Sovereign Debt Crisis and the Future of the Euro

Dr Peter Bekx, the Director of Internation-al Economic and Financial Relations and Global Governance in the European Com-mission’s Directorate-General for Eco-nomic and Financial Affairs, was in Kuala Lumpur on 1 March to address the impact of the sovereign debt crisis in Europe and the future of the euro.

As part of his one-day visit, Dr Bekx partic-ipated in a technical talk at Bank Negara Malaysia and a public presentation at the Westin Kuala Lumpur which was attended by some 180 participants. As part of his presentation, Dr Bekx highlighted the strategies the EU has put in place to guide the recovery of the European economy and create growth.

According to Dr Bekx: “The EU has come a long way in tackling the Eurozone crisis

and we can confidently state that we have turned a corner. While a lot has been done, admittedly still more remains to be done. But we are putting our house in order and we are on track with our economic and in-stitutional reforms. Today, no serious poli-tician is arguing that the euro is dead, nor is any smart financial market operator bet-ting on the demise of the euro.”

My presentation here has highlighted the immense progress achieved in creating powerful backstop facilities, reforming the economic governance of the Eurozone and moving towards full economic and mon-etary integration. All this is due to the ab-solute determination of Europe’s political leaders to preserve the euro, as a project that lies at the very heart of the European Union. The euro is here to stay, no matter what it takes” he concluded.

Every 2 years the corporate sector in The Netherlands gives an award to ‘the best performing Embassy’. The award is based on a survey among members of the 3 largest business organizations in the Netherlands (VNO/NCW, Fenedex and MKB Nederland), representing SME’s as well as MNC’s.

The industry is increasingly pleased with the economic services of Embassies. The valuation of the services of the foreign diplomatic network averaged 8.6 on a scale of 0-10.

With a score of 9.2, the Netherlands Embassy in Kuala Lumpur was most valued for their economic services by Dutch entrepreneurs. Ambassador Paul Bekkers received the VNO-NCW/Fenedex Prize during the ‘Economic Day’ of the ambassadors’ conference in January in The Hague. In the presence of Minister for Foreign Trade Lilianne

Ploumen, he received the prize from VNO/NCW Chairman Bernard Wientjes and Chairman of Fenedex, Ad Hamburg. Kuala Lumpur shares the award with the Consulate General in Shanghai, equally appreciated by the corporate sector.

According to respondents there is a positive turnaround in the approach and business support through the diplomatic network. This coincides with the greater emphasis the government gives to “economic diplomacy”. VNO-NCW and Fenedex are strongly opposed to further limiting the number of missions in view of budget cuts. The Netherlands has a large economy of which an important part is earned abroad. The diplomatic missions have proven that they have an important role to play in this.

One of the immediate results coming from winning the award, is that the Embassy was asked by Fenedex to write an article

for its monthly member magazine, a wide read publication among Dutch exporters. This article, focusing on the trade and investment possibilities in Malaysia, will be published in the next issue of ‘Fenedex Press’ and surely creates good promotion for Malaysian-Dutch business interests.

During the award ceremony and the following interviews, Ambassador Bekkers said the award is a huge compliment to the entire Embassy team. He also thanked the MDBC for being a great partner and doing an excellent job in helping to assist companies in Malaysia and increasing trade between the Netherlands and Malaysia.

Recently the Embassy was given the opportunity to modernize its working space. With limited budget available once every 12 years, the Embassy tried to create an open and modern environment, against a rather typical Dutch color scheme. On 18th February, the management of the Ampwalk, the designers of Black Point Design and some invitees from the diplomatic corps were shown around at the premises. The creative environment fits and encourages the attitude of the Embassy staff.

Currently, 5 Dutch student interns are working at DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur, out of which 3 are placed via the MDBC Student Internship Program. Here are some of their experiences.

Iris van Rooijen of the Hotelschool The Hague and Josien Zwarteveen, 3rd year Facility Management student of Hanze University, are handling front office duties at DoubleTree.

“During the two day introduction training that DoubleTree provides for all of their new team members, I discovered that they truly believe the power and recognition of success comes from their employees. This is the real value of the organization,” said Iris.

This internship is exceeding their expectations in many ways; they are learning new things every day. “So far it has been an amazing experience and I have definitely expanded my borders,” Josien said.

Iris added: “As a group, we were given the task of reviewing existing processes, standards and systems. From there, we are to put together recommendations on how the hotel can further improve delivering service excellence, which is a priority to the organization. This means that I have the opportunity to really be involved in the dynamic world of hospitality. I hope I can say at the end of my internship that I have made a change

and added some small piece of value to the organization in one way or another.”

Neal Winter, a 3rd year International Communication & Media student at Hanze University, feels right at home at the hotel’s Business Development / Marketing Communications department. DoubleTree by Hilton is one of ten brands of hotels and resorts in Hilton Worldwide’s portfolio, so presenting the corporate identity of the hotel to the outside world is of major importance. “Whether it’s a simple blog post, a television interview or an international press release, the MarCom department works to ensure consistency and uniformity while always keeping true to the hotel’s culture of CARE,” Neal explained.

CARE stands for Creating A Rewarding Experience, which is the hotel’s CSR initiative. The students participate in the CARE committee, which consists of 20 team members from various departments who take CSR very seriously and truly believe in giving something back to the community. Neal has already worked on multiple fundraisers and awareness

campaigns with the CARE committee such as Earth Hour and Make A Wish Foundation.

“It’s a demanding and challenging internship; but a lot of fun and absolutely worth it!” Neal concluded.

BioDoMe: Clean energy from organic WasteWith rapid urbanization and increased industrialization, the strain on waste management infrastructure with increased population and stronger demand for energy to support the latter has placed many nations under immense pressure in addressing those pressing needs – all of these while the larger concern of climate change is on the global agenda.

This is one of the reasons why BIODOME Asia is so keen on being one of the key players in providing the solution to the above challenges. BIODOME is one of the only companies that specializes in infrastructure for anaerobic digestion (AD), or more commonly known as biogas projects. Biogas is produced when organic waste (think wastewater from agricultural process, like Palm Oil Mill Effluent; or food and farm waste which is otherwise landfilled or discharged) undergoes a biological process without oxygen – microorganisms turn the organic matter into nutrient-rich digestate which can be used as fertilizers, and methane – a green house gas which is 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide (CO2), in trapping heat resulting in rising world temperature.

Since its inception in 2011, BIODOME Asia has secured a number of projects assisting companies in the region to achieve their sustainability agenda. By treating organic waste, this avoids them going to the landfill (which also emits GHGs), while providing a secure source of energy without relying on the fossil-fuel based grid electricity. The energy generated from biogas is also clean, ie. it does not emit any extra carbon back into the atmosphere.

Some of the recent projects BIODOME Asia has been involved in includes an AD farm for a public-listed company which has diverse business interest in agriculture sector (poultry & fish farming), as well as oil palm & biomass production. The project site is a poultry farm of 750,000 egg-laying chickens in Kedah, Malaysia.

Poultry waste is a source of malodor, due to its high ammonia content. The poultry farm owner would use anaerobic digestion to contain the malodor as well as generate 2.0MW of clean, renewable energy using the backwash of litter of the birds. This allows the environmental issue to be resolved while generating clean energy for the client. This project marks BIODOME Asia’s plans to foray into AD projects using other feedstock, aside from Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) where the main AD market has been active in.

To further afield, BIODOME Asia would also be spearheading the project for renowned Australian fertilizer and composting group Richgro, to produce clean energy for their facilities whilst diverting organic waste out of landfills. This project is also one of the first projects

Project Expansion to 4 Digesters at Batu Pahat, one of the first clean energy-to-grid-from POME (Palm Oil Mill Effluent) projects in Malaysia

funded under the Australian Government’s Clean Future Energy initiative.

One of the businesses to benefit, Fremantle-based Richgro, a garden products supplier, will be able to generate all of its power onsite, reducing the company’s carbon emissions and its electricity consumption by 100 per cent.

It will do this by building a waste-to-energy plant at its main manufacturing facility, helping the company receive and process a more diverse stream of organic waste, including food waste diverted from landfill.

However, we are not resting on our laurels in the main industry which propelled us into winning MDBC’s inaugural Sustainability Awards 2011, in the category of Best Sustainability Practices by a Malaysian Partner – the palm oil industry. We continue to strengthen as a player in Indonesia with a third project secured in the archipelago nation.

The project is expected to generate 2MW of clean energy for a 60 tonnes/hour palm oil mill. As Indonesia is the world’s largest palm oil producer ahead of Malaysia, the potential for AD projects is immense as governmental and environmental regulations tighten. Indonesia also highly encourages rural electrification, as much of the country is still not connected to the grid. With waste treatment and clean power generation being a win-win solution, there certainly would be more projects of this nature commencing.

We are extremely proud to be part of this journey in ensuring sustainability in all fronts of business, environment and energy security in the region and hope to be able to support our clients in the region with their sustainability agenda!
