How long have you lived in Meadow Pointe 1? I always wanted to live in sunny Florida, and fi-nally made it happen in January 2006. I bought a house in the Grasslands, enrolled my girls in Meadow Pointe schools, and have been happy making Meadow Pointe home ever since.
What is your “day job”?I love medicine and I’m good with languages, so I work as a certified medical interpreter at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center. I help people from other countries understand their disease, diagnostic testing, treatment options, and side effects.
What made you want to be a MP1 CDD supervisor? In Florida, so many people are from ‘somewhere else,’ so it’s important to me that we cultivate a friendly, almost ‘old-fashioned’ neighborhood atmosphere. I envision a community where we know each other, look out for one another, and celebrate each other’s victories. I also see a vibrant place where people can find recreation and fitness activities. I want to do it with a keen eye toward the budget. Being on the Board is rewarding because all of the supervisors are conscientious of our fiscal responsibilities. We take our jobs seriously, with the best interest of Meadow Pointe residents first and foremost.
What are your top priorities for improving our community?1. Keep assessments low!
2. Continue to build a unified community through events such as fairs, expos, sporting events, holiday activities, pool parties, yard sale days, etc.
3. Encourage more resident participation with the Board. I want to hear what residents want, and I want to be responsive to that.
4. That Meadow Pointe keep up with peer communities in terms of amenities, beautifica-tion, and value.
How do you see Meadow Pointe 1 in the future?I see Meadow Pointe as a thriving family-oriented community with activities for children of all ages, and family fun. Personally, I like to focus on fitness, such as the new gym, tennis improvements, and yoga classes. When I go to the new fitness building at night, I see the people playing tennis, basketball, and volleyball. I see people going to dance class, Zumba, and yoga nearly every night. During the day, the pool has swimmers and splashers cooling off in the water. People have fun here; people feel safe here. It’s such a great atmosphere. Meadow Pointe is the place to be, and it’s only going to get better!

During the June 2 CDD meeting, the Board of Supervisors approved a draft budget for
FY 2012 (October 2011 – September 2012). As Meadow Pointe 1 gets closer to paying off the original bond, property owners will see a decrease in the Debt Service Fund (DSF) assessment and an increase in the General Fund Assessment. The total of all MP1 assessments will decrease by ap-proximately 7%. The remaining DSF assessment will be eliminated in the FY 2013 budget after the bond is paid off.
The public hearing to adopt the FY 2012 budget will be conducted during the CDD meeting to be held on August 4, at 6:30 PM in the clubhouse. Each property owner will receive a letter in July containing the legal notice for the public hearing and a breakdown of the assessments by fund. They will also receive the “Notice of Proposed Property Taxes and Proposed or Adopted Non-Ad Velorem Assess-ments” (commonly referred to as the “TRIM” notice) in late August.
Please note that the CDD assessment indicated in these notices is an estimate, and the assessment cannot exceed the amount stated in the TRIM notice.

every year Floridians are faced with the possibility of hur-
ricanes. Most years these dreaded storms do not land on our shores and mainland. However, in the not too distant past hurricanes have had devastating effects on many communities in Florida and every year the possibility exists that communities will be hit during the summer and fall months.
During the months of potential hurricanes, it is important to plan for the worst and hope that it never happens. For example, you and your family may be asked to leave your home due to some emergency conditions in your community. Your local emergency officials will not ask you to leave your home or location unless there is a valid rea-son. Do not try and second-guess
the validity of their request. Do as they say immediately. Most of the time these requests and related in-formation will come through radio broadcasts or the local TV station. Different warning methods may be used such as a siren or telephone calls.
Stay tuned and follow the direc-tions and the evacuation routes recommended by the emergency officials. The most important thing to keep in mind is to have a plan for a possible evacuation. Be prepared to evacuate and keep the following suggestions in mind.
1. Know the route and follow directions. Keep a map on
hand that will enable you to take a route that may be unfamiliar to you. Be prepared to use routes specified by the emergency officials. Do not use any road or shortcut that they do not recommend. Some areas familiar to you may no longer be accessible or they may be dangerous for reasons unknown to you.
2. Local authorities will tell you what to do. Stay in touch
with local authorities. They are in touch with the state or federal authorities and will know which route to take and what local condi-tions might be. If you follow their instructions, you are more likely to arrive in a safe location and to be able to communicate with your family members or friends.
3. Keep your vehicle’s tank filled. Gas stations may be
closed during a hurricane and prior to its arrival. During power outages, fuel pumps at gas stations may not work. Prepare for the hur-ricane by filling your tank well in advance of the storm.
4. One vehicle per household. If it is necessary to evacu-
ate, plan to take one vehicle per household. This will keep family members together and reduce the number of cars on yourparticular evacuation route.

The National Crime Informa-tion Center, a unit of the FBI, reported that in 2010, a vehicle
was stolen every 25.5 seconds in the United States. The agency said that a total of 1,235,226 vehicles were taken, which amounts to over $7.6 billion in vehicle losses alone.
The expense involved in car theft is an important reason why consumers must be prepared in advance to handle their vehicle being stolen. However, consumer attitudes about preventing auto theft are based on a number of misconceptions, which can result in serious consequences for the victim. Many consumers believe that it is almost impossible to avoid be-ing victimized. They feel that car thieves can’t be stopped by these methods of protection.
This defeatist attitude led to the develop-ment of the “Wiser Drivers Wise Up” (www.wiserdrivers.com) program, which is designed to educate drivers about how to handle a vehicle theft. The project is a joint collaboration of the Insurance Information Institute, the Council of Better Business Bureaus and the Na-tional Insurance Crime Bureau.
The program teaches drivers about the 5 myths of auto theft that can make them vulnerable to the high cost of car theft:
Myth 1: Most Thefts Occur in Unprotected AreasParking in an unprotected area doesn’t mean your vehicle is more likely to be stolen. An FBI report on “Crime in the United States” revealed that over one-third of all vehicle thefts occur at a home, compared to only two of every 10 vehicle thefts occurring at a parking lot. Vehicles that are stolen from highways, roads or alleys, including carjacking, account for the smallest number of thefts.
Myth 2: Stolen Vehicles Are Usually FoundAlthough about one-half of all stolen ve-hicles are recovered, the first few days are critical. The longer the vehicle remains in the possession of criminals, the less chance of recovery. Fridays and Saturdays are the days with the highest frequency of motor vehicle theft and Mondays and Tuesdays have the highest recovery rates.
Myth 3: Insurance Always Provides a Rental CarMany insured drivers believe that once they report a stolen car, their auto insur-ance will automatically cover a rental car until their vehicle is found. Although theft coverage is included via the comprehensive part of an auto insurance policy, this coverage may not automati-cally include a replacement rental car for a stolen vehicle.
Myth 4: Anti-Theft Devices Are Easy to InstallPay a competent professional to wire, install and test your anti-theft system because today’s vehicles are too complex for an untrained person to cut into a vehicle’s electronics. Don’t select the installer on price alone. Check with the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org) to see if the business is reputable. You should also ask if the Mobile Electron-ics Certification Program (MECP) has certified the alarm system technician. If not, you may want to look elsewhere. The installer should provide a written war-ranty and show you how the anti-theft system works so that you are comfortable with its operation.
Myth 5: Thieves Are Not Interested in Older VehiclesIn 2010, the top five model years stolen were 1991, 1995, 1989, 1994 and 1997, respectively, according to The National Insurance Crime Bureau.
And finally, don’t wait until after your vehicle is stolen to find out what cover-age you have. Consumer Reports advises drivers to review their auto insurance policy each year, including coverage that is mandatory, coverage you’ll most likely need, and additional types of coverage, such as roadside assistance and rental reimbursement.

They are an invaluable part of our team!! Next month … we’ll showcase our lifeguards.
In June, I had the opportunity to meet with newly appointed Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco, Colonel Brian Head, Major Maurice
Radford and Captain Joe Frontz.
I was excited to hear the new Sheriff ’s plans for the future of the Agency. More emphasis will be placed on proactive Intelligence-Led Policing, while continuing to support the regular patrol activities.
Sheriff Nocco expressed an interest in hearing from the residents of Pasco County about their concerns regarding the state of the county from a law enforcement aspect. He asked if there would be an interest in holding a Sheriff ’s Citizens Academy in the Wesley Chapel area.
The Pasco Sheriff ’s Citizen Academy is an exciting 6-week program that provides participants with an up-close and detailed look at the Pasco Sheriff ’s Office and modern law enforcement. As a member, you will learn about the latest trends and procedures in law enforcement, as well as the duties and responsibilities of the various departments. You will also have the opportunity to participate in tours of various Sheriff ’s Office buildings and ride in an agency vehicle with a road patrol deputy.
The Pasco Sheriff ’s Office Citizen Academy meets two times a week for three hours. The program is 6 weeks long and there is no cost to participate, but seating is limited. For more information about arrangements for an academy class in the Wesley Chapel area, please e-mail me (Jerry Lynn) at [email protected]. Upon completion of the Citizen Police Academy, participants receive a certificate of graduation.
As the temperatures rise during the summer months, we find ourselves opening our garage doors more frequently to partake in outdoor activities around our homes. Leaving garages open and unattended unfortunately leaves an opening for theft crimes of opportunity. The Deputies
servicing Meadow Pointe II and Meadow Pointe III have advised me that there have been incidents of bicycle and yard equipment being stolen out of garages and driveways, even when the homeowner’s are at home or in the yard.
While we reside in a nice, and usually peaceful community, please do your best to protect yourselves from would be thieves. Taking care to close garage doors, bring bicycles and yard equipment inside, securing your vehicles and keeping valuables and appealing items out of view, whenever possible, can help prevent you from becoming a victim. As always, be aware of what’s going on around your neighborhood. Report any suspicious activity to the Pasco County Sheriff ’s Office (non-emergency number: 813-929-1204; emergency number: 911).
Enjoy your summer.

Congratulations to the first ever Angels All Star team to win the District 4 Cham-
pionship. The 2011 Wesley Chapel Angels All Star Team, shook off their nerves after dropping their opening game 2-0 to West Pasco, the bats started to hit and the pitching was outstanding. In the first Loser’s bracket game, sporadic hits and great pitching led to a 2-0 win against Hernando. Later on that day, the bats came alive against Springhill and more great pitching led to a 16-0 win. In a rematch against West Pasco, Riley Baxter pitched 4 solid innings and continued hitting led to
a 7-1 victory to force the “if neces-sary” game for the championship. In the 1st inning of the Championship game, Wesley Chapel scored 6 runs on 6 hits and then handed the ball To Jordyn Kadlub to pitch 5 shutout innings, in route to a 9-0 victory. After losing the first game 2-0, The Angels outscored their opponents 34-1 in route to the Championship. There was great bunting and base-running by Shelby Westbrook, an inside the park HR by Jordan Almasy, a triple by Melissa Wark, and over .500 batting for Jordan Almasy, Logan Coward, Melissa Wark, Neely
Peterson, Shelby Westbrook and a team batting average of .468. The defense played solid when they had to, but the awesome pitching kept their opponents hits quiet. In all the 5 pitchers gave up a total of 2 hits with only 11 balls put in play throughout the tournament and had 61 strikeouts, Jordyn Kadlub (10
Innings – 26 K’s), Logan Coward (4 innings – 9 K’s), Riley Baxter (7 in-nings – 19 K’s), Jordan Rosenberg (2 innings – 4 K’s), Shelby Westbrook (1 inning – 3 K’s). The Angels will travel to Carrabelle, FL for the State Tournament July 7-10th. v

Tommy Girvin, a Meadow Point III resident, is a composer and author and has been the musical director and lead
guitar player for the famous classic rock singer “Eddie Money” for the past 24 years. Although, that keeps him busy and traveling abroad, here at home, the children of Wesley Chapel and Meadow Pointe have come to know him as Mr. Tommy, “Masterful Guitar Player, Endearing Storyteller”.
Coming from a musical family, Mr. Tommy has been writing and performing since the age of 8. As a child, along with his brother and sister, he appeared in talent shows, store grand-openings, pizza parlors and various parties and events. “We learned the meaning of hard work and competi-tion in the entertainment industry at an early age”, he said. Tommy has a long list of musi-cal projects and achievements, but his newest venture, Mr. Tommy Presents has earned him his celebrity status here in New Tampa.
Mr. Tommy was inspired by his children, Talia and Tommy, to write his first “Mr. Tommy” songs. “I would create songs as I sung to them at bedtime”, he recalls. His children were also both involved in the writing and singing of the songs on the “Mr. Tommy” CDs. “I love them dearly”, he said.
Mr. Tommy Presents is the result of years of playing classic folks songs and original Mr. Tommy songs, live at elementary schools. He says, “The children, these days, don’t get to hear these wonderful historic songs unless someone plays the songs for them. That’s were I come in. I love it and they most definitely love it!” Some of the traditional favorites include This Old Man, She’ll Be Comin’ Around The Mountain, Green Grass Grew All Around, and dozens more.
Mr Tommy appears regularly at The Shops at Wiregrass, enchanting kids age 1 to 80 playing those classic kid’s folk songs along with origi-nal songs and modern kid’s songs. If you are a mom, dad, grandparent or caretaker, home with the kids during the day, you can enjoy his free
concerts at Wiregrass Wednesdays on select days of each month at 10 a.m. Don’t let your child miss the chance to hear wonderful songs, sing, dance, and meet new friends! Going to see Mr. Tommy at the mall will quickly become one of their favorite places to be.
Mr. Tommy also entertains at school as-semblies, PTA functions, and when available, birthday parties. He has preformed many times at Double Branch and Sand Pine Elementary Schools for various holiday celebrations. He has even joined the Double Branch Choir in several presentations. This talented musician also brings joy by performing monthly for the kids at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, Tampa General and other area hospitals. In thank you letters and e-mails, parents and hospital administra-tors repeatedly express their gratitude to Mr. Tommy for making such a difference in the lives of these children. One hospital coordinator explained how difficult and stressful hospital-ization can be for a child. She stated that these children need more than medicine to get well, and how his gift of music is definitely part of the non prescription kind (of medicine) that helps to heal their hearts and minds.
At his performances, as well as on his website, www.mrtommypresents.com, Mr Tommy sells CD’s, T-shirts, cups, shakers, and other items to benefit The Pediatric Cancer Foundation. You can also visit him on Facebook at www.facebook.com/mrtommypresents and you can e-mail [email protected] to sign up on his e-mail list for info on upcoming shows and to receive a weekly coloring page.
We are so very blessed and thankful to have Mr. Tommy as a part of our Meadow Pointe com-munity. His positive influence has our teachers playing his CD’s at school in the classroom. Children show up at his mall concerts wearing their favorite Mr. Tommy t-shirts and playing their miniature toy guitars. Trick or Treaters have been spotted in Meadow Pointe dressed up as Mr. Tommy for Halloween and home daycare providers have reported getting requests to sing and dance to his original “Robot Reindeer” song long after the holidays have passed.
Whether listening in the car to his Little Songs and Verses for Little (and Big) Kids CD, lulling our little ones to sleep with the Goodnight, Good-night CD or adding extra cheer to the holidays with his Christmas Time Is Here Again CD, we are overjoyed to sing along with him again and again. Hats off to you Mr. Tommy (Big Top Hat, that is!), for delighting the children of our community! v

Double Branch Elementary had an Odyssey of the Mind
team which won the Extreme Structure Company for the state and competed for the world title at the University of Maryland May 28, 2011.
This group of six children worked very hard. They compet-ed against teams both regionally and at the state level, placing 1st in both. Moving forward to the world competition they compet-ed against the other states and twenty five other countries.
The other challenge this group faced was funding; for this small team and two coaches, the cost was about $8,000. In order to raise the funds quickly, the coaches and parents turned to the community. They paired with Ierna’s Heating & Cooling to do a Facebook Campaign. For each “like” generated for the compa-ny’s webpage, they would donate.
In a short two weeks, $2400 was raised thru this campaign to sponsor the trip! A check was presented May 27th and the kids and coaches were on their way.
Odyssey of the Mind is an inter-national academic program that provides creative problem solv-ing opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. There are a variety of problems students can compete in. Extreme Structure Company, (ESC), is competing in the Un-hinged Structure category. It is an engineering problem that in-volves building a small structure of balsa wood than can weigh no more than eighteen grams.
During the competition the competitors must perform an eight minute skit while they pile weights onto their structure. The main goal is to have their structure hold the most weight, however they are judged on ev-ery aspect of their performance.
Although coached by Murali Ventakappa and Sharon Hor-witz, the kids did everything for the skit, songs, and problems be-ing solved. They even made their costumes and props. The state competition structure the group of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders built held 630 pounds.
DOuBLE BRAnCH ELEMEnTARy
odyssey of the mind, Facebook and Ierna’s
heating & Cooling work together to raise $2,400 for a World Competition
Nationally, the team came in 13th overall for the Division I Unhinged Structure. To quote many of the kids, “I wish this would never end. I am having such a great time.” They loved meeting kids from other coun-tries, especially Togo in Africa, Japan, China, and Singapore. Lisa Couture, a parent, spoke of how, “It was an incredible expe-rience for all around. We learned so much, parents included.
The atmosphere was energetic and so full of life. It didn’t mat-ter who won or who lost, every-one was just thrilled to be there. IERNA helped give our kids an experience of a lifetime. It was something, I, as a 38 year-old mother will never forget. They wore the IERNA shirts with pride during the Spontaneous competition and ‘rocked it’. So, with IERNA’s literally on their backs, they hit the ball out of the park!”

Welcome to the beginning of a won-derful summer season at Meadow
Pointe IV. We welcome all Meadow Pointe residents to come and enjoy the facility amenities and have a great summer! Please remember there is no lifeguard on duty at the pool and for your own safety please ad-here to the pool usage guidelines published in last month’s issue. If you have any ques-tions or would like a copy of the guidelines please ask staff. While food and non-alco-
holic beverages are permitted at the pool, please have the courtesy to clean up before exiting the pool deck area. This includes any food items that may have fallen onto the pool deck. It is our hope that if everyone takes responsibility for themselves, the pool and pool deck can stay clean of trash and unwanted insects and remain enjoyable for all residents. Stop in and say hello, we look forward to seeing everyone this summer! v

Who they are: Truth Conquer-ors Sports League is a community outreach to young people and their families. They are having a positive influence in the lives of young people by creating an atmosphere of love, encouragement, and guidance. At the present time they manage one sport: Soccer. The league is approaching a total of 80 players that are managed throughout the year. They are open to all in the community. The league is dedicated to the strengthening and unifying of families, communities, and local churches. Through sports competition, it promotes the values
and priorities that build character and competitiveness in a fun, wholesome environment. More About: They are a group of former professional soccer players who want to give back to the game of soccer. The idea is to share some of the knowledge, advice, and encourage-ment that they received when they were growing up and learning to play. In classes, children will have fun learning ball control skills including passing, finishing, dribbling, receiving, heading, and defense. Weekly soccer clinics help to improve balance and
coordination, as well as improve physical endurance. Their invitation, Training children for life: Leadership, creativity, self-confidence, positive attitude and char-acter development; all through various forms of soccer clinics and games! “Come and join our club and learn the right skills and techniques in order to improve and have better chances in the future. We have a compromise with the community and it is to do the best we can to prepare each one of your kids in a great sport and as an ex-professional soccer player I will do my best to help
you achieve your dreams.” Come this Saturday to the MPIV clubhouse field from 8 am to 10:30 am and enjoy a free class. Available for children 3 and Up! If you can walk you can kick the ball! For contact info, please see MPIV Activities.
Also, please mark your calendars to attend our community fair Saturday, August 13, 2011 from 8:30 am to 12 pm. Enjoy soccer, games, clowns, and other fun activities. All are welcome to the Meadow Pointe event to be held at the Meadow Pointe Park located behind Shellwood subdivision. v

GIRL sCouts
Allison Burton, MD
Girl Scouts of West Central Florida (GSWCF) is seeking Meadow Pointe residents to
be troop leaders for Meadow Pointe girls. Both men and women over age 18, to volunteer as positive adult role models. Troop leaders facilitate activi-ties meeting the contemporary needs of girls, and make a lasting impact by helping build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.
GSWCF works in close partnership with troop leaders to deliver the information and support needed to help girls unleash their potential. As part of its commitment, GSWCF offers a flexible schedule of in-person and online trainings for all troop leaders, assisting them in developing their skills and learning about the Girl Scout program. By completing all required training this summer, leaders can have a troop as early as this fall!
In addition to troop leaders, GSWCF is seeking volunteers to fill a variety of other positions. Volunteers are needed to work behind the scenes to support troop leaders, or to train other volunteers. Volunteers are also needed to work directly with girls as event directors or program facilita-tors at local Girl Scout camps. The possibilities are endless! No matter the position, Girl Scout volunteers gain valuable job experience, hone leadership skills, participate in their community and, ultimately empower and inspire girls. v
For more information on vol-unteering with GSWCF, visit www.gswcf.org. For specific questions contact Kristie Wiley: (813) 262-1765 or [email protected].
