Distributed control and safety systems intoday’s modern vehicles are made possible bythe use of multiple bus systems. These integratedbus systems must interact with the environment andcommunicate vital information throughout the entire vehicle.

It has been estimated that electronics account forapproximately 25 percent of the value of today’sautomobile. This figure is estimated to rapidly increaseto nearly 40 percent in the future. The average new carcomes with a variety of Electronic Control Units (ECUs)managing everything from safety and stability toentertainment. These ECUs can include any combinationof memory, microprocessors (µP), microcontrollers (µC),and/or digital signal processors (DSP). Effective debugof ECU designs, including FPGA debug, requires acomprehensive toolset that not only provides a way tovisualize digital signal operation but also delivers timecorrelated views of both digital and analog information.

New safety and monitoring system technologies in theautomotive design arena have moved towards RF andwireless as the enabling technology.
Tire pressure monitoring, keyless entry,and immobilizer systems are examplesof technologies containing RF signals thatare often triggered by external eventswhich create profiles that are intermittentin nature; present one moment, absentthe next, and variable over time.
These transient, infrequent signals are difficult to discoverand measure using traditional spectrum analysis tools.Tektronix' range of real-time signal analyzers, withDPX® technology, acquire up to 292,000 spectrummeasurements per second, compared to 50-100 witha traditional spectrum analyzer. DPX® technology enablesfast discovery, triggering, capturing and analysis oftime-varying signals in correlated multi-domains (Time,Frequency, Amplitude, Pulse, Modulation, and Phase).
The Tektronix portfolio also offers the latest innovationswhen dealing with embedded RF designs, with mixed RF,analog and digital technologies. Tektronix designed theworld's first Mixed Domain Oscilloscopes (MDO), whichincludes a dedicated and integrated spectrum analyzerinput channel, providing time-correlation of spectrumanalysis with 4 channels of analog and 16 channels ofdigital, making it the ideal mixed-domain trouble-shootingand system verification tool for the automotive industry.
