Host City: Bydgoszcz Bydgoszcz is the city with nearly 400,000 inhabitants. It is the capital city of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodship and at the same time it is the largest city in Kujawy. The city developed into one of the most important economic centers in Poland. 46,000 companies operating in very different fields, but in particular in telecommunication, chemical industry and food. River transport became the flywheel of the city’s economy in the previous centuries and today it is possible to admire a whole range of preserved examples of industrial engineering connected with water. Especially many tokens of old Bydgoszcz survived in the city centre. Therefore it is worth visiting the Mill Island, which is surrounded by the waters of Brda River. The beauty of the picturesque location of the Mill Island is emphasized by facades of eighteen and nineteen century granaries, Rothera’s Mills, reflected in the Brda River, and they constitute an indelible memory of the city from several hundred years ago. Development of the city is inseparably connected with the increase in demand for top quality culture. Superb performances on the scenes of the Opera “Nova” and the Polish Theatre and Pomeranian Philharmonic attract many art lovers. Sport in Bydgoszcz is not just a local affair, even though it is at the highest level in Poland, but truly international. The city has hosted superb European or world sport events for instance the 1st IAAF World Youth Championships, European U23 Championships, twice the European Cup in Combined Events, SPAR European Cup, World Grand Prix Volleyball Tournaments and other. The city organised the IAAF World Junior Championships in 2008 and 2016 as well. The only Queen Athletics - The Queen of Sports – has also ruled for years in Bydgoszcz. One of the honorary citizens of Bydgoszcz is Teresa Ciepły - a sprinter and a hurdler , Olympic bronze medallist from Rome, gold and silver from Tokyo was elected an honorary citizen of Bydgoszcz. The patron of the sports complex "Zawisza" is Zdzisław Krzyszkowiak – Olympic champion of Rome, European champion, world record holder in the 3,000 m steeplechase. These two people, great personalities of the world of sport have set the path for generations of athletes from Bydgoszcz. The Military Sports Group which was established by CWZS "Zawisza" include pole vaulters - Łukasz Michalski and Paweł Wojciechowski – the world champion, track-and-field athlete Dariusz Kuć, middle-distance runner Marcin Lewandowski, hurdler Dominik Bochenek and sprinter Marika Popowicz. All of them already with medal-winning achievements at the European or world championships. The Military Sports Group CWZS Zawisza also gathers athletes in other sports: rowing, canoeing – world champion Piotr Siemionowski, shooting and weightlifting – world champion Marcin Dołęga. It is not just the successes of individual athletes that the inhabitants of Bydgoszcz have been observing in their city. Since the late 90s the city has been the organizer of many major sporting events, especially in athletics. One could list: Junior World Championships under 18 in 1999, the European Championships under 23, SPAR European Cup, World Junior Championships in Athletics, the World Championships in Cross Country (twice as a first city) and European Athletics Festival. The ideally suited for athletics Zawisza stadium and a great atmosphere in the stands foster the achievement of excellent sporting results. Zawisza Stadium is a complex of modern sport facilities, which, after a thorough reconstruction in the years 2007-2008 meets the standards of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and the international football federations (FIFA and UEFA). The stands can accommodate over 20 thousand spectators. The building under the new grandstand houses conference rooms, restaurant, wellness facilities, as well as the Gallery of Bydgoszcz Sport. Just in the last decade the Zawisza stadium has witnessed a few matches of the national team. It is worth mentioning just a few of these significant events: the football match with Finland in 2006 in the World Cup qualifiers and friendly meetings with Romania, Ireland, Greece and Canada. Bydgoszcz has also hosted twice Poland's Football Cup finalists and finally just few weeks ago hosted UEFA U21 Football Championships (group stage). BTF&EC 22:00 22:45 Media Facilities Media Centre The Media Centre is located at the Stadium in the Tennis Hall. The Media Centre is equipped with free wireless connection (cabled connection if necessary). The Media Centre will be open as follows: Media Centre Opening Hours Wednesday, 12 July – 12:00 – 22:00 Thursday, 13 July – 08:30 – 22:00 Friday, 14 July – 08:30 – 23:00 Saturday, 15 July – 08:30 – 23:00 Sunday, 16 July – 08:30 – 23:00 All relevant publications/material as well as free coffee/tea, soft drinks and snacks will be available at the Media Centre. Media Tribune The Media Tribune is located in the Main Tribune, 150 metres from the Media Centre. All seats are equipped with electricity, TV and CIS monitors as well as free wireless connection. Mixed Zone The purpose of the Mixed Zone is to offer journalists an opportunity to talk to the athletes about their performances as they leave the field immediately after the competition. All the athletes should leave the stadium through the Mixed Zone and it is the only space where the athletes can be interviewed after their competition. It is up to the individual athlete to decide whether or not to talk to the media. The Mixed Zone is located after the finish line on the stadium track level. The Mixed Zone will be split into four parts – TV live, ENG TV crews, Radio crews and Written Press giving priority to permit-holders. The LOC News Team operates in the Mixed Zone collecting Flash Quotes relaying athletes comments quickly and accurately via the CIS system to the Media Working Areas. Media Conference The official press conference will be held at the Zawisza Stadium Press Conference Room ( on Wednesday 12 July at 17:00. European Athletics and LOC representatives as well as some local and international participating athletes will be attending the opening. Photographers Brief meeting for the accredited photographers will be held at the Media Centre on Wednesday 12 July at 15:30. Participation is mandatory as the photographers’ bibs will be handed out on this occasion. Photographers will have access to the infield only with INFIELD PHOTO bibs. Only 12 photographers can be infield at the same time. Infield Photographers are selected by the European Athletics Communications Manager and the LOC Media Officer. Lockers For photographers there will be lockers in the Media Centre where cameras and other equipment can be stored, also at night. The stadium area will be guarded 24/7.
