WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE LEN PRESIDENT Dear Media Representatives, Dear Friends, Here we go again, the LEN Family is heading back to Glasgow, host of the 2018 European Championships which was an enormous success. We are expecting no less this time as our continents’ top swimmers will gather once again in the magnificent Tollcross International Swimming Centre for the European Short-Course Swimming Championships. This event has grown into a major showcase in the global sport calendar as it features the top stars of the top aquatic discipline. Hosts of the past editions did their utmost to create a brilliant environment for this outstanding competition. Herning, Netanya and Copenhagen all contributed a great deal to make this meet a real highlight of the season – just like the media following the showcases either on- or off-site. Our championships enjoyed some outstanding coverage in all platforms and that played a huge role to consider our beloved short-course meet a big success time after time. Next comes Glasgow 2.0, and we are convinced that we will be part of another memorable show. The highly dedicated local organisers and the professional staff of British Swimming have proved numerous times that they are committed to offer the highest standards in all events hosted on the British Isles. I’m sure they are ready to do it again. Our professional LEN Media Team has already started its preparations to offer the usual high-level service for you and I’m sure that this time you’ll be offered all kind of materials to support or even enhance your coverage. Let me already thank the efforts of the organisers and the local partners, as well as our most important partner Eurovision (EBU) for standing by the event and we are looking forward to witnessing another memorable edition of our treasured short-course swimming championships. Paolo Barelli LEN President

PREVIEW Record participation at the 2019 Short-Course Europeans Comebackers and Newcomers fight for the medals at the 20th edition in Glasgow Glasgow (LEN) – With their sights already set on the European Long Course Championships in Budapest (May 11-17) and, of course, the Olympic Games in Tokyo/Japan (July 24-August 9) as the 2020 highlights, the European swimming elite will meet for their last big championship this year in Glasgow. After Copenhagen in 2017, Scotland’s biggest city (ahead of the capital Edinburgh), will not only stage one of the most important events of the European Swimming Federation (LEN), but also represents a historical milestone as it is the 20th edition of the event that celebrated its première in Rostock, Germany in 1996. 49 of the altogether 52 LEN Member Federations have entered swimmers for the 40 competitions, among them “newcomer” Gibraltar with three swimmers on the team roaster. The large number of Federations will set a new record in participation. In Netanya/Israel four years ago, 48 Federations took part. In 2017, at the last edition in Copenhagen, altogether 47 LEN Federations entered the competitions. 539 swimmers (305 male / 234 female) have announced their participation for the five-day-event at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre, a world-class aquatics venue located in the East End of Glasgow, site of the 2018 European Aquatic Championships. They all will fight for medals in altogether 40 events – among them international top stars as well as young talents, who will get the chance to take their first podium finishes at a major international meet. European champion Duncan Scott heads host team Host Great Britain has nominated 18 swimmers. With an overall medal tally of 39 gold, 62 silver and 71 bronze medals at European SC Championships, the hosts are among the top ten nations in the history of swimming. In the past years the female and male swimmers have stepped into the limelight and added a bunch of medals. The most promising Brit at their “home match” will be freestyle specialist and native of Glasgow Duncan Scott. The 22-year old 2018 European LC champion and 2019 World bronze medallist in the 200m will face a tough duel against Lithuanian Danas Rapsys, who will try to defend his 2017 title. “Les Bleus” with comebacker Florent Manaudou - Italy with the largest team One of the absolute stars of the championships in Glasgow will be Florent Manaudou. The Frenchman makes his comeback for “Les Bleus” after a kind of “swimming sabbatical”. The 2012 Olympic 50m freestyle champion and silver medallist in Rio (who lost the final against US American Anthony Ervin by only one hundredths of a second) had put his sporting focus on handball for a while. Now he returns to the pool to tackle his third Olympic Games in the summer. As his first comeback attempts were more than promising, the championships in Glasgow might be the next important step for the 29-year-old who arrives in Glasgow with a season’s best of 20.57 in the 50m free. In Scotland, the Frenchman will lead a team of 19 athletes. The largest team however – with a total of 41 athletes – comes from Italy headed by “Swimming Queen” Federica Pellegrini. The 31-year-old achieved her fourth 200m freestyle World title this

PREVIEW summer after having won her very first 200m freestyle event exactly ten years ago in Rome 2009. Another star on the Italian team is undoubtedly Gregorio Paltrinieri. In Glasgow the Olympic 1500m freestyle champion will not have to face his toughest competitor, World champion Florian Wellbrock from Germany. But as Ukraine’s World silver medallist in the 1500m event Mykhailo Romanchuk as well as Norway’s rising star Henrik Christiansen are hot on the heel of Paltrinieri, swimming fans can well expect a thrilling battle. Germany will arrive in Glasgow with the second-biggest team – a total of 38 athletes with a mixture of promising young talents and very experienced swimmers such as multiple World and European champion in the 100m and 200m breaststroke Marco Koch and Philipp Heintz, who hopes to retain his 200m IM title. Russia will be represented by a big and powerful team of 34 swimmers – among them multiple medal winners at World and European championships such as Kliment Kolesnikov, Vladimir Morozov or Aleksandr Popkov. Hungary will compete with a team of 23 swimmers, headed by Katinka Hosszu who has again entered a total of five individual events – four less than in 2017 (9). She can get her 25th s/c European medal as she stands with 22 (16-4-2). 13 Copenhagen champions to compete in Glasgow A total of 13 European Short Course champions from Copenhagen will compete in the 34 individual swimming events in Glasgow. Three of six “European” 2016 Olympic champions will start in Copenhagen – three-time Olympic champion Katinka Hosszu (HUN/100m back, 200/400m IM), Pernille Blume (DEN/50m free) and Gregorio Paltrinieri (ITA/1500m free). With Paltrinieri (800m free), Pellegrini (200m free), Simona Quadarella (1500m free), Boglarka Kapas (200m fly) and Hosszu (200/400m IM) five of altogether ten “European” 2019 World champions hope for a top spot on the podium. As Hungarian swimming icon Laszlo Cseh (34) will miss the SC Europeans for the first time since his premiere in 2002, the now oldest athlete in the men’s competitions is his compatriot Krisztian Takacs, who will celebrate his 34th birthday on December 30. At age 33, backstocker Jenny Mensing from Germany is two months his junior. The youngest athletes in Glasgow are 14-year old Laura Bernat from Poland and Ramil Valizade from Azerbaijan (15). Prize money for World and European records For the second time in the history of European Short Course Championships, World and European records will be rewarded with a bonus. Each individual world record clocked in the pool in Glasgow will bring €10,000 to the athletes’ purses, while each individual European record will be rewarded with €5,000. In total, the European Swimming Federation (LEN) will offer 220,000 Euros as prize money for the 12 best performances in the men’s and women’s events respectively. The best single-performance according to the FINA points table will be honoured with 20,000 Euros.

STARS TO WATCH Pernille Blume (DEN) - She caused one of the biggest surprises in Rio by winning the 50m free at the Olympics. So far she could not repeat that feat in individual races but will surely have a shot at the sprinting golds this time too. In Copenhagen 2017 she had four medals, two bronzes in the 50m-100m free and a silver and a bronze in relays – she possesses four s/c European titles, all came in relays too. Henrik Christiansen (NOR) - He opened a reliable medal-delivery service (so to say) since 2015 when he got his first international medal, a bronze in the 1500m free in Netanya. Ever since he is part of victory ceremonies all over the world, including a break-through World Championship podium this summer in Gwangju (silver in the 800m). In Copenhagen he claimed two bronze medals (400m, 1500m) and has a silver in the 400m from Glasgow 2018 – shall we witness his first ever winning performance? Katinka Hosszu (HUN) - Twenty-two medals already to her name alone in the short-course European, the medley queen of swimming is back for more and she is set to reach the magical 20-title border. Unlike at previous editions, she enters only her four strongest events, the three IMs (she made the treble in 2015 and 2017) and the 200m fly as she left the backstroke behind (she made the treble there in Netanya and Copenhagen too). His first medal is going to be her 90th in the FINA and LEN major events (l/c, s/c World and Europeans, Olympics) – while she can get her 25th s/c European medal as she stands with 22 (16-4-2). By the way, she will celebrate the 15th anniversary of her first-ever senior international medal, a bronze in the 400m IM at the 2004 short-course Europeans in Vienna. Arno Kamminga (NED) - The Dutch breaststroker hit new heights in late September-early October by winning seven World Cup races and posting some pretty fine times en route. So far he has a lonely title at major events – eventually it’s from Copenhagen 2017 where he won with the Dutch 4x50m medley relay. Based on his performances, he is on rise so he is set to enjoy a fine medal-haul in Glasgow. Radoslaw Kawecki (POL) - He started his medal-haul in his pet 200m backstroke exactly ten years ago in Istanbul, coming runner-up back then. A decade on and he is set to continue his streak of five consecutive podium-finishes in this event (and added the 100m golds in 2011 and 2015). Altogether, he has 6 golds and 2 silvers at the short-course Europeans, two years ago the underwater-kick master got a silver in Copenhagen. Marco Koch (GER) - Turning into 30 next January, Marco Koch might still be the man to beat in the 200m breast as the German veteran can be a threat at any short-course meets. Though his best years seem to be behind him (world title in Kazan 2015, double breast titles in Netanya 2015 and Windsor 2016), he can still be capable of delivering something special. Two years ago he was runner-up in his pet event in Copenhagen.

STARS TO WATCH Florent Manaudou (FRA) - Perhaps Florent is going to be the hottest action in Glasgow – the French rocket is back where he belongs to after spending a couple of years on the handball court. This autumn he already showed something from his talent again which had brought him Olympic, World and European titles in the 50m free. This is going to be his first appearance at the short-course Europeans since his debut in Chartres 2012 which was spectacular with five gold medals. Vladimir Morozov (RUS) - The Russian Rocket is on fire again, he won the World Cup overall title as he won 7/7 races in the 50m free and 50m back and 7/6 in the 100m free this autumn – quite a streak. He delivered these medals in long-course but Vlad is a real short-course specialist, he is 10-time European champion and also has 9 world titles to his name. Two years ago he clinched three golds and a silver in Copenhagen by winning the free dash and adding three relay medals. Federica Pellegrini (ITA) - If it’s 200m free, it’s still Federica Pellegrini. Fifteen years after finishing second at the 2004 Olympics, Italy’s superstar is still a major player in the pool, she won back-to-back world titles in 2017 and this summer (two years ago she was the first one to ever beat USA’s Katie Ledecky in an international competition). Fede had some ups and downs at the short-course Europeans ever since her debut in Trieste where she won the 200m and finished runner-up in the 400m free. She is a 7-time champion, though in Copenhagen 2017 she had only a bronze in the 4x50m free relay. Danas Rapsys (LTU) - The tragic hero of this summer World Championships in Gwangju – he seemed to have won the 200m free only to see a DSQ sign flashing next to his name soon after he had hit the wall. A minor move of his leg led to a false start call from the judges and that cost him his first ever world championship gold. Now he is back to retain his title in the 200m (he had a nice win in Copenhagen) and to do one better in Tollcross than in 2018 when he finished runner-up behind home hero Duncan Scott. He was on fire in the autumn, won 7/7 races both in the 200m and 400m free in the World Cup and finished runner-up in the overall. Mykhaylo Romanchuk (UKR) - Two years ago the Ukrainian was the first one to halt Italy’s emperor Gregorio Paltrinieri’s long unbeaten streak in the 1500m free at the majors as he managed to come first in Copenhagen. Then he could finish ahead of his arch-rival both in Glasgow 2018 and Gwangju 2019 but he had to settle for the silver as Florian Wellbrock pipped them for the title on both occasion. Now the young German is away so Romanchuk is on course to retain his title. Duncan Scott (GBR) - If someone has good memories from Glasgow it’s definitely Duncan Scott who enjoyed a brilliant meet in the summer of 2018. The young Brit earned three golds, including a memorable win in the 200m free (two came in relays) and a silver in the 100m free. Two years ago he finished third both in the 100m and 200m free in Copenhagen and this summer he earned his first individual medal at the Worlds, a bronze in the 200m free. Andreas Vazaios (GRE) - Greece’s greatest hope is the man who stunned everyone by claiming the 200m IM title at the 2016 European Championships in London. He was close to add the short-course gold a year later in Copenhagen, finished second, still one batter than in Netanya 2015. He also came runner-up in the 200m fly – since the Hungarian aces skipping the coming edition, the door is wide open for everyone in this latter race.
