Media Release 26 November 2015 United Voices for People with Disabilities ("UVPD") welcomes the release last night of the report of the Senate Community Affairs Committee’s national inquiry into the violence, abuse and neglect of people with disabilities in institutional and residential settings. UVPD is proud of the fact that a number of its members were able to contribute significantly to the report and have their voices heard. We acknowledge the important role that the media played in exposing the horrific violence and abuse of people with disabilities. We particularly acknowledge and appreciate the commitment shown by Richard Baker, Nick McKenzie from The Age” and the Four Corners team who were pivotal in exposing the appalling levels of abuse in Yooralla homes, the shocking circumstances that finally galvanised the Australian public and led to the Inquiry. We strongly and enthusiastically endorse the call for a Royal Commission. We note that for many people with severe disabilities, living in isolation, this inquiry was not accessible. Only a comprehensive investigation which supports the most vulnerable people with disabilities to speak up will reveal the truth and extent of the violence. We call on all members of the Australian Public to contact their local Federal members and lobby strenuously for the recommendations of the report to be accepted. UVPD pays tribute to individuals and the disability organisations whose tireless lobbying assisted in the establishment of this Inquiry. Most importantly, we thank Greens Senator, Rachel Siewert, who moved the motion for this Inquiry and has shown dedication in the relentless pursuit of the facts around violence, abuse and neglect of people with disabilities in Australia.
