governors. The sum of £ 5000, the cost of the land, has beengiven by an anonymous donor.
SOCIETY OF ARTS.-This Society’s Albert Medal,for " distinguished merit for promoting arts, manufactures,or commerce,
" has been awarded for the present year to SirJoseph Dalton Hooker, K.C S. L, C. B., M.D.,D.C.L., LL.D.,F.R.S., for the eminent services which, as a botanist andscientific traveller, and as director of the National BotanicalDepartment, he has rendered to the arts, manufactures, andcommerce, by promoting an accurate knowledge of the florasand economic vegetable products of the several colonies anddependencies of the Empire. The annual conversazione ofthe Society will be held this year at the Fisheries Exhibitionon July llth. The Prince and Princess of Wales are expectedto attend.
CITY ORTHOPÆDIC HOSPITAL.-The thirty-firstannual festival of this charity was held on the 13th inst., thechair being occupied by Mr. Alderman Cotton, M.P. In
proposing the toast of the evening, the chairman stated thatfor want of funds there were now twelve beds vacant in theinstitution, and as it was entirely without endowment, andtherefore wholly dependent upon public support, he pleadedfor increased subscriptions. Mr. E. J. Chance replied to thetoast "The Medical Officers." and briefly alluded to severalcases in which patients had, by the treatment received atthe institution, been enabled to undertake work for whichthey were previously physically incapacitated. Subscriptionsamounting to £ ºª0 were announced during the evening.
