The presentations and posters were of impressive quality, confirming that this event is really a highlight of our academic program. You will find the details of the winning presentations inside this newsletter, but let me congratulate our first prize winners: Dr. Xi Wang in the resident’s category; Dr. Andrew Peppin for the fellows; Dr. Derek Cappon in the graduate category; Dr. Jatin Kaicker for the undergrad; Dr. Michael Di Ianni for his poster presentation. Congratulations to all for their excellent work! As you know, the hospital has launched a new strategic planning process, which will fundamentally change the way we plan and monitor our performance at HHS. The second HHS leadership meeting took place on Tuesday, March 20 th 2012. Information presented gave us a better idea of the strategic priorities geared to improve quality of care, support research and to attract, and retain talents. I’ll keep you posted, as we will have to appreciate the impact of the new direction on our Department. At the beginning of the month, I was invited to present our National eHealth Strategy at ECR in Vienna, an increasingly successful conference with more than 20,000 participants, the second largest in the world, after RSNA. It was interesting to hear that our European colleagues’ concerns are not very different from ours. There are some similarities, like the threat that keeps looming over the use of MRI over some occupational health concerns, but otherwise, we share the same need to contain growing healthcare costs in a context of a persisting economic crisis. (Yes, even us, with our 15 billion dollars deficit!). There were many interesting presentations looking at the future of radiology, with many talks on hybrid imaging, functional and molecular technologies, with new interesting developments. Also, evidence-based radiology at EIBIR, a field of research we will soon embrace in our Department. Forensic radiology was well represented at a very impressive special exhibition on post-mortem imaging, something we may want to consider. I’d like to remind you that our MIIT (Medical Imaging Informatics and Teleradiology) Conference is coming up fast on May 11 th and 12 th , 2012, in Toronto. We have great speakers, presenting a lot of interesting topics, to help us understand the future of radiology and make us better radiologists. Have a look at the web-site www.miit.ca . April 25 th is Administrative Professionals Day and I wish to acknowledge and thank all of our administrative assistants and clerical staff. The theme for this years Administrative Professionals Day is: “Admins, the pulse of the office”. This theme exemplifies our admins who are extremely proficient in a time that demands accuracy and speed, while maintaining the more traditional role as the gatekeepers for many patients, employees and clients. Great job! Please join me in welcoming Mary Ann Zadvorny, my new assistant on the hospital side. Mary Ann will be in charge of all matters pertaining to credentialing, hospital related business and issues, and also participate in the newsletter. OUR RADIOLOGISTS

Congratulations to Dr. Srinivasan Harish, radiologist at St. Joseph’s Healthcare, on being chosen for one of the best scientific papers presented at the Society of Skeletal Radiology (SSR) Annual Meeting in Miami Florida. The title of his presentation: “MRI of the Spine and Sacroiliac Joints for Spondyloarthropathy: Influence on Clinical Diagnostic Confidence and Patient Management.” Dr. Harish will receive an award at the RSNA where he will repeat the presentation.

A YORK grandmother is marking her 100th birthday this weekend with a family celebration. Retired teacher Dorothy Doris, of Dringhouses (York, England), will be surrounded by her closest family this weekend, including her son, Ian, who has flown over from his home near Toronto, in Canada, to be with her. Speaking about the secret to his mother’s long life, Dr Doris said: “She has always been very active. It used to amaze people that well into her 80s she would walk into town and back which was a round trip of five miles.” Mrs. Doris, who moved to York in 1986 after her husband, William, passed away and turned 100 yesterday, said: “I have led a good life and I have a great family.”

A Date in our History

The Battle of Vimy Ridge, on Easter Monday, April 9, 1917, marked the day Canada and its military came of age. This was the first time the divisions of the Canadian Corps worked under Canadian command, and not as a subordinate unit of the British army. The German troops were well entrenched on Vimy Ridge and had beaten back British and French forces for months. Within four days, the Canadians had accomplished what had cost their allies the loss of an estimated 300,000 men. This battle changed the way war was fought. The Canadians combined the use of technology by uniting the air force, artillery and infantry, to work together with creeping barrages so the soldiers followed immediately after the artillery and took the seemingly impenetratable German defence by surprise.
