Not many people realise the significance

of the dangers of a mercury spill, but

one medical centre in South Auckland

    experienced an unfortunate incident.

The nurses were at their duties on that

September morning, and the waiting triage

room, was very full and busy as usual. In

a rare, and unusual incident, the mercury

Sphyg unit on a stand somehow leaked,

mercury spilt over the polished floor and

right into a high traffic area. Staff knew

immediately that this was an event that had

to be managed professionally and carefully,

and a quick call to the Fire Service provided

a level of support, advice and service that

    proved very valuable.

Staff mentioned its not so much the mercury, its the vapour that is dangerous. Indeed

the Fire Service monitors revealed a mercury

vapour level, that was 4 times higher than

the publically acceptable level. The complete

    clinic was closed .

The Fire Service sealed the contaminated

area, brought in breathing apparatus and

body scanners and scanned both patients

    and nurses, took away contaminated

clothing and shoes. All people in the close

vicinity had to also have blood tests taken toestablish blood mercury levels which were

    again repeated 3 months later.

This has been a huge financial cost to the

clinic. A typical Sphyg includes around less

than a tablespoon of mercury but its where

else it goes that is more dangerous. Ministry

of Health guidelines state that liquid Mercury

is not readily absorbed through skin, but

it does vaporise at room temperature and

inhalation of this airborne vapour can be

    harmful to human health.

By the time that we had finished our

clean up, which included the disposal

of all mercury sphygs, plus we had a

deep clean which had to be carried

out by an accredited specialist cleaner

within the premises, it proved not

only a major distraction, but certainly

something that proved to be a huge

    learning experience. Medical and Health

    Professionals generally understand that

some doctors still prefer to use mercury

Sphyg, but if they and patients knew

the dangers to society, there would be

a significant shift away from this way

of thinking.Amtech Medical is honoured to have

received this story directly from the clinic

involved, and in the interests of safety and

well being, we have included this story in

our March medinews. If any clinics would

like to know about Amtech Medicals

range of Mercury Free Blood Pressure

Products, we will be very glad to offer

them our range. Amongst them is the

    German Riester products, which provide

high accuracy and are well priced. If youwould like a price, please call us on 0800

    268324 straight away!

At the request of the clinic, we have

withheld the name of the clinic, but the

Charge Nurse is able to talk in more detail

to anyone interested in accessing a greater

    knowledge of this incident.

    Please ask [email protected] for

    more information on this.

    Mercury Spill Poses Danger

Welcome to this issue of Medinews, our ever growing

and popular newsletter, which we produce monthly

for our wide and varied medical client base. This

issue sees a significant shift in design style, and after

thinking long and hard, and getting input from some

of our valued advisors, we have moved to this new

square shape and style of publication.

This month, we have brought you an interesting

range of products and put some real focus on

equipment. Our range of equipment products is very

exhaustive, and we would like to welcome our two

new suppliers, now officially represented by Amtech

Medical. Mirage Propulse Ear Health are now solely

represented in NZ by Amtech, and also Askir Suction

which is manufactured by a company in Italy called

CAMI. Both of these manufacturers historically have

had trading relationships with Hallmark Surgical and

In an amicable agreement, the agency

was taken over by Amtech, and stock held by

Hallmark has been taken over by us as well. We

would like to welcome these new suppliers to our

company, and look forward to a long and successful

distribution relationship. We have also given some space at the back of

this book to talk about our reporting ability. Our

organisation makes available to interested customers

some very effective reporting tools, so that clinics can

more easily understand the usage profiles and high

volume products that they purchase. We can offer

these reports as hard data, or alternatively as graphed

information. I invite you to read our National Sales

Manager comments, so that you can see for yourself

how this can be effective for you.(see this on p12)

To all our valued clients, thank you for your supportand if you would like to consider purchasing from

Amtech Medical, and you havent so far, then I

    personally welcome your call.

Call me anytime for anything medical!

Silvermed is a dressing combining the advanced moist wound healing technologies with silver.

The healing process of Silvermed arise from the modifications that silver ions determine on the

proteins of bacterial cells. These alterations allow the rapid lyses of pathogens and speed up

the wound process healing leading to shorter hospital stays and relevant costs:

    FEATURES:

Silvermed acts as antibacterial - the silver is hydro-activated in a controlled manner bythe exudates. Silver ions are released in accordance to the level of exudates and of

bacterial burden of the wound Creates the moist wound environment - ideal for fast healing Provides an effective barrier to bacterial penetration - preventing infections on wound site. Does not adhere on the wound - dressing changes are atraumatic

What are Latex Gloves?First and foremost, you need to protect you. Whenyoure handling dangerous substances, a well-fitted,good quality glove can be your first line of defenceagainst any harmful liquids, or infection. Althoughthere are no directly known statistics, there is littledoubt: Disposable gloves have saved the lives ofthose who have worn them.

Next, consider those who are being protectedfrom you; your germs or a couple of moleculesof your blood from a small wound. If you preparefood for others or work with items that will beinserted into other peoples bodies, you probablyalready understand how important gloves arein reducing the transmission of bacteria. Justremember to wash and dry your hands beforeputting on a new set of latex gloves. And usea new set of gloves if you touch your own skinor hair or if you contaminate your gloves in anyother way.

Finally, consider the greater society that youlive in. Gloves serve society in very powerfulways. Disease prevention, yes, but even more;they enable caregivers to assist in areas and insituations where they would be at risk withoutthe protection that gloves offer. Dont try to be ahero; wear the gloves.

Heres an interesting fact about gloves that youmight not have known: germs and bacteria cantravel through latex and all the other materialsthat gloves are made of; nitrile and the synthetics.

But it takes time for the bacteria from your handto work through the glove material, so changinggloves often helps reduce transmission of

    infectious diseases. Change gloves often.

    And Why Use Latex?

In many ways, latex is hard to beat. Latex isnatural rubber. Latex stretches like nothing else

and will instantly snap back to its original shape

and size. No other glove material can quite matchthis natural property of latex. A surgeon wearing

a proper set of latex gloves can forget that he iseven wearing them. If you need gloves that fitclose and conform exactly to the shape of your

hands, you should seriously consider using latexgloves.

If you are allergic to latex, you may need to

consider nitrile or synthetic gloves, but if you areone of the large majority who do not need toconsider latex allergies, dont be confused by all

the choices in glove materials: order latex gloveswith confidence.

And whats in a Latex Glove? Latex, of course. But

we are going to look a little deeper. What is latex? How is it formed? What additives are used?

Latex is secreted by rubber trees when their bark

is cut. The rubber sap is a natural bark repairmechanism that the rubber tree has. If the rubbersap is left exposed to the open air long enough,

the sap will harden and will eventually heal the

bark. In order to prevent the latex sap from

hardening, special thinning agents are added to

the sap soon after it is collected.

Rubber sap has been used to create latex products

for more than 100 years now, so chemical

engineers have learned to add phenols and other

chemical agents to the sap before it is heated in

vats so hand molds can be dipped into the liquid

rubber. If the gloves are to be tinted, the dyesare usually added as the liquid rubber compound

is being heated. Different manufacturers use

    different chemicals, adhering to closely-guarded

formulae in order to achieve superior strength,

    elasticity and opacity.

The hand molds, with the latex skins still

intact, are rinsed extensively in order to wash

out some of the chemical agents which are

designed to leach out as the latex cool-dries

on the molds. The rinsing also helps to reduce

the latex proteins which are responsible formost of the latex allergies.

The process is slightly different for powdered

gloves versus powder free gloves, but generally

the gloves are removed from the molds, then

sterilized (sometimes they are sterilized before

being removed, if the removal process is

automated) and packed in boxes for shipping.

This is what goes into making the latex glove!

Nitrile gloves have a reputation for not being asclosely-fitting as latex gloves. Nitrile (also knownas Synthetic Rubber) is generally not quite aselastic, nor as strong as latex and because they donot conform to the hand as tightly as latex, havenot been widely adopted for medical surgery. However, nitrile gloves are about 3 times morepuncture resistant than latex and this makes thenitrile glove an excellent candidate for ambulance

operators, health clinics, paramedics and very, very popular with dentists and dental hygenists. In fact, the Nitrile Exam Glove has become thede-facto standard for dentists worldwide sinceabout 1999.

For many reasons (not the least of which arethe patent licensing fees), nitrile gloves end upbeing somewhat more expensive than latex, butoften, cost is not an issue: nitrile gloves are almost

    perfect for many applications.

    Why use Nitrile Gloves

With so many other types of gloves available, whywould anyone want to use nitrile gloves?

Because nitrile butadiene rubber is very differentfrom natural (latex) rubber, thats why.

Nitrile gloves were at first heralded as a solutionto a growing minority of people who have

developed allergies to the latex proteins thataccompany latex gloves. But the truth is, nitrile

gloves are not suitable replacements for the latex

glove in some situations; the surgical operating

What are Nitrile Gloves?room may be one of those places. However, nitrile gloves ar eideal for environments where

puncture resistance is important and where

    resistance to hydrocarbons is critical.

Nitrile gloves have a reputation for not fitting as

well as latex gloves. This reputation was earned

early in the development of the nitrile butadiene

formulae that are used to create the gloves and

this reputation was also formed before newermanufacturing processes have attentuated these

early problems. Amtech is pleased to say that

all our nitrile gloves are made with advanced

NBR formulae and processes that produce the

best possible fit for any nitrile glove, while also

maintaining superior resistance to oils, fuels and

solvents. There are some applications where

nitrile gloves are the only gloves that make sense.

Dentists prefer nitrile gloves because, along

with the reduced possibility of allergic reactions

for their patients, nitrile gloves offer superiorpuncture resistance; important when those evil-

looking little hooks that dentists love are being

handled. In this age of scary blood-borne diseases,

dentista are all too aware of the need to

    protect themselves.

    Whats in a Nitrile Glove?

Nitrile Butadiene Rubber, also known as

    Buna-Nand more commonly known as

    Synthetic Rubber.

There are trade names for nitrile rubber:Krynac, Europrene and Nipol are some of

the most common. Perhaps because of thelow startup production cost for nitrile rubber,it is produced mainly in Taiwan and China.Recently (2008), the European Union levieda very significant price-fixing tariff againstmost nitrile rubber producers, but this has notresulted in any significant price reductions forglove manufacturers.
