Nine years ago, Legacy skated onto the ice as an untested, opportunistic junior varsity team. Today, Legacy skates onto the ice as an exciting, established varsity program. The amazing dedication, hard work and perseverance of athletes, coaches, students and parents remains the irreplaceable foundation of this team. Thank you all!
I am extremely proud of this team and the extraordinary job Coach Larson and his staff have done training these young men not only as excellent hockey players, but as men of teamwork, discipline, sacrifice and Christ-like living.
Fans, thank you for your support, your enthusiasm, your sportsmanship and your representation of Legacy Christian Academy (and our other cooperative schools) as you cheer on the Lions. We thank God for the opportunity to watch this team and look forward to the great moments this year promises.
GO LIONS!!!
Welcome to Legacy Christian Academy Hockey

Continue to strive for excellence as we humbly seek after God for his guidance and counsel moving forward. Continue to live our the athletic model of SCHAPE in all you do both on and off the ice.

History and Philosophy of the Legacy Christian Academy “Lions” Boys Hockey Team
The Legacy Lions are coming off of their 7th varsity season in the program’s young hockey history. In their first season as a varsity team (2008-09), the team won 4 games. In the following two seasons, the team registered 3 wins and 8 wins respectively. At the start of the 2011-12 campaign, the goal was to finish with a .500 + season and advance in the Section 5A playoffs; and the team did just that! Finishing the season with a 13-11-3 record, the team won their first post season playoff game by defeating North Branch by a score of 4-0!
Entering into the 2012-13 season the Lions set a goal to win 17-20 games. Winning a team record 19 games the Lions finished the season with a 19-6-2 record and went on to rewrite their record book. They won their first mid-season tournament championship when they won the Silver Bay Christmas Tournament. They set team records as follows: most consecutive wins in a season (10); highest per game “goals for average” (5.20); lowest per game “goals against average” (2.07); and most shutouts in a season (8), to name a few. For the post season, the Lions were awarded a first round playoff bye (the first time ever) and went on to lose a close section 5A quarter final game to Rogers 3-1.
In 2013-14 the Lions put together another solid season. Once again, they established themselves as a team to be reckoned with in the Two Rivers Conference by putting together a 7-4-0 conference record. The 12-13-0 record overall earned the Lions a #7 seed in the Section 5A Playoffs. After defeating Moose Lake, the Lions were eliminated by the #2 ranked Princeton Tigers.
This past hockey season (2014-15), the Lions had a very rough start losing their first four games. But with hard work and commitment the team rallied and went 13-8 in their last 21 games. As a result, in just their seventh varsity season, the Lions won their first-ever Two River’s Conference Championship! They did so by compiling a record of 8-2-0 in the conference and finishing 12-14-0 overall. Defending the conference championship is the goal for the 2015-16 hockey season. Although the team lost several key seniors to graduation, they return 17 letter winners (the largest in team history). Five quality goaltenders competing positions should make the Lions strong from the net out. Add to this, a couple of key players returning to anchor the defensive core, a number of top returning forwards and several excellent new additions, it appears the Lions have the potential to defend their title. It will be fun to see who rises to the challenge! We appreciate all of your support and hope you have fun watching the Lions compete in this their 8th varsity season!
Legacy Christian Academy is committed to developing a first-class high school hockey program. Our goal is to win and honor Jesus Christ in the process!
The goals for the Legacy Christian hockey team are as follows:• Strive to put Jesus Christ first in all we do.• Learn to win with class and lose with grace.• Develop the skills (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual) that are necessary to become the best hockey
players and citizens we can be.• Learn what it means to be a team member and take personal responsibility.• Learn how to overcome adversity…rather than learning how to avoid it.• Set team and individual goals and create the plans to achieve those goals.• Learn the values of discipline, hard work, perseverance, honor, integrity and fair play.
The coaches at Legacy Christian Academy believe the athletic experience can be viewed as a “Test Tube of Life.” It is within this test tube that athletes are confronted with many life situations. Quality coaching can help athletes learn life lessons through these situations and then take what they have learned and apply it to the rest of their lives.
We participate in athletics primarily to have fun! However, in high school athletics we keep score for a reason. Therefore, it is our goal to teach our athletes what it takes to win in the game of hockey, to win in the game of life, and to have a great time doing it!

Head Coach Steve Larson is beginning his ninth season with the Legacy Christian Academy Boys’ Hockey team. Steve is a Minnesota native with a rich hockey background. He played college hockey for Bethel College (University) in St. Paul. He received his master’s degree while a Graduate Assistant Coach with the hockey team at Miami of Ohio in the CCHA. He has been a successful coach at both the high school and college levels. Here is a sampling of Coach Larson’s hockey successes: Head hockey coach for Blaine High School 1995-2000; AA Boys MSHSL State Hockey Champion in 2000; MSHSL State Hockey Coach of the Year in 2000; AA Boys MSHSL State Hockey Consolation Champion in 1999; three state tournament appearances; and three-time Section 4AA Hockey Coach of the Year. Prior to coaching at Blaine, Larson coached at Bethel College for ten years. He was the head hockey coach there for seven years, and was named the MIAC Hockey Coach of the Year in 1986. Steve and his wife DeeDee reside in Ramsey and have two children; their son Isak (Ike) and daughter Kaia.
Assistant Coach Dan Moots is beginning his third season on the coaching staff with Legacy Christian Academy. Dan started playing hockey in Minnesota as a youth and after high school, had a successful career playing many years in Sweden and Norway in the D1 and Elite Leagues. For the past nineteen years, Dan has enjoyed coaching youth sports. “Coaching offers opportunities to teach life lessons that reach far beyond the rink. Toughness, compassion, teamwork, selflessness, resiliency and leadership are just a few characteristics that young players can improve upon in the competitive arena. As a coach, I like to challenge them in these areas on and off the rink. There is no better feeling than helping someone improve their abilities and chances for success, which is why I love coaching.” Dan and his wife, Jill, reside in Ham Lake with their two children; son Aaron and daughter Lexie.
Assistant Coach Ike Larson is beginning his first season as a coach at Legacy Christian Academy. Ike was a four year letter winner at Legacy and graduated in 2013. During his time at Legacy, Ike set the career scoring record with 107 points in 107 games. He never missed a game in his four years. Ike was also awarded the “Brian Buddish Award” in four consecutive seasons and was voted to the All-Conference team three times. In his senior year, he was voted to be a captain and was presented with the “Hobey Baker Character Award.” After playing two seasons of junior hockey, Ike is now a freshman at Bethel University (St. Paul).
Assistant Coach Luke Pierro is beginning his third season as a coach at Legacy Christian Academy. Luke was an original member of the first Meadow Creek Christian School / Legacy Christian Academy Hockey Team. He was a four year letterman in hockey and was presented with the “Hobey Baker Character Award” in his final season. Luke also holds the record for the 3 fastest back to back to back goals in Legacy history (a pure hat trick). Luke graduated from Meadow Creek Christian School in 2010 and graduated from the University of Northwestern (St. Paul) in 2014 with a degree in Finance.
Assistant Coach Dan Olufson is beginning his third season as a coach at Legacy Christian Academy. Dan came to Legacy as a player in his junior year of high school (2010-11) after transferring from Totino Grace. Due to the transfer rule, Dan was not eligible to play on the Legacy varsity team during his junior season. However, during his one season as a junior varsity player, Dan earned the respect of his teammates and was voted to be a captain of the varsity team for his senior season (2011-12). Dan was an All-Conference player and was also awarded with the “Brian Budish Award” his senior season. Dan is currently a senior at Bethel University (St. Paul) and is majoring in organizational communications.
Video Coach and Asst. Goalie Coach Tom Zych is beginning his fourth season on the coaching staff at Legacy Christian Academy. He graduated from Concordia Academy in Roseville, MN in the spring of 2012. Tom played hockey for over 10 years and he was among the first players at Concordia Academy to play hockey with the Lion’s as a result of the hockey cooperative with Legacy Christian Academy. Tom is currently enrolled at Saint Paul College in the networking engineering program.
Legacy Christian Academy Coaching StaffThe Legacy Hockey Staff is committed to encouraging each player to develop
into the best hockey player they can be; but more importantly they are committed to helping each player grow closer to Jesus Christ!

“You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.
Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous
man, though for a good man someone might
possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners,
Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:6-8
