Education teachers

participate in SIOP

training CTE teachers met together as a group

on Wednesday August 28th for the

back-to-school pre-service county-

wide meeting. Teachers participated

in one of four training sessions taking

place this year on the Sheltered

Instruction Observation Protocol

(SIOP) that can be used to plan and

implement effective instruction for

English learners. Teachers worked

together collaboratively during this

session while learning about the

components and features of this

model, with a focus on Language

Objectives. Additional training

dates include:

Williamsburg Technology Education

students presented with design

challenges the first day of school

Students in Robert Dudek’s Technology Education

classes at Williamsburg Middle School were up &

out of their seats designing and building projects

that integrated Science, Technology, Engineering

and Mathematics. Mr. Dudek wanted students to

begin the school year with a clear understanding of

the Design process and STEM integration. Students

in sixth, seventh and eighth grade were presented

with various design challenges.

Eighth grade students were asked to build a habitat

to protect an ice cube penguin from the bright rays

of the sun.

Students could

select from a wide

variety of materials

to use for their

project, but were

limited to a budget

for building the

habitat.

Seventh grade students were

asked to build the tallest

skyscraper possible using dry

spaghetti. A marshmallow had

to be placed at the top of their

structure.

Sixth grade

students were

asked to design

and build a

pedestal using

3x5 notecards

that could hold

up at least one

textbook. Student teams could not communicate

with each other verbally, and could only share ideas

visually using sketches they created for the design.

This year, the strongest pedestal could support 12

textbooks!

The Career, Technical and Adult

Education Advisory Committee

seeks student members

Student participation with the Career, Technical and

Adult Education (CTAE) Advisory Committee is

encouraged. The advisory committee assists the

CTAE office in reviewing and recommending

improvements to existing programs and supporting

the development of new course offerings to enhance

the instructional program of Arlington Public

Schools.

The committee meets once a month throughout the

school year at lunch time. Students interested in

joining the committee should call Kris Martini,

Director at 703-228-7209.

Middle school students use STEM

skills to build boats Students at Kenmore Middle School worked

together this summer to design and build boats

during the LEAD Learning Engineering and

Algebra through Design camp. Instructional

staff at Kenmore including Technology

Education teacher Cassidy Nolen, former Math

teacher Michelle Meehan, Math Coach Steve

Burrow and Instructional Technology

Coordinator Michael Goodman, along with Joe

Youcha from the Alexandria Seaport

Foundation, led the two, two- week sessions.

Students used math and science concepts to

construct wooden boats that they launched on

the Potomac in Alexandria. More than 20

students participated in this year’s program.

Engineers from the local firm GHT

Limited talk with high school students

about careers in Engineering Engineering teacher, Danielle Meyer, at

Washington-Lee High School provided her students

with a unique opportunity to interview Engineers

from GHT Limited during the first week of school!

Students learned first hand from the professionals

what it is like to be an Engineer and what the job

entails. Five registered, professional Engineers,

including the firm’s president, spoke with students

about the specific duties and responsibilities of their

jobs, their educational backgrounds and provided

some advice for students interested in a career in

Engineering.
