SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 2018
MEET OUR SPEAKERS SEPTEMBER LUNCHEON SPEAKER ~ MIKE KAHN ~ September 20, 2018
Mike Kahn was born and raised in Tampa and grew up in the Forest Hills area. He graduated from
Chamberlain High School and received an Electrical
Engineering degree from the University of South Florida. He
worked as an engineer with Tampa Electric for over seven
years. Mike is currently serving as the Director of the Tampa
Bay Baptist Association.
Mike received Christ at the age of 15 at a youth camp in
Ridgecrest, NC. He grew spiritually and became a leader at his
home church, Idlewild Baptist. He met his future wife, Teena
Davis, at Idlewild and they were married in 1982. Teena is a
registered nurse. They have three children: Daniel, Jonathan,
and Elizabeth who are all serving the Lord at Idlewild.
Mike, Teena, and Daniel left Tampa while Mike attended New
Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary from 1988-1990 where
he received a Masters of Divinity degree. Teena worked part-
time to put Mike through school. For three years, Mike served as Youth & Singles Minister at
Tampa Baptist Church (now Christ Fellowship) and then for 19 years at Idlewild Baptist Church as
Single Adult Minister for 7 years and next as Adult Minister for 12 years. Continued on Page 2
OCTOBER LUNCHEON SPEAKER ~ PASTOR ELOY RODRIGUEZ ~ October 18, 2018
Eloy Rodriguez has been a Pastor for over 20 years. Prior to coming
to Idlewild to plant a Hispanic Church, “Idlewild en Espanol,” he
planted two churches in Orlando, FL. He volunteered as a Chaplain
with Good News Ministry and Orange County Jail Ministry before
being the co-founder of the Spanish Jail Ministry in Orlando. He is
currently the Hispanic Chaplain of the New York Yankees Minor
League team.
He has served in our Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) in different
capacities, member of the Florida Baptist Convention (FBC)
nominating committee, member of the local associations of Greater
Orlando Baptist Association and Tampa Bay Baptist Association as
President of the Hispanic fellowship and as moderator. Eloy also has been a conference speaker
for North American Missions Board and the FBC language departments in the areas of
Evangelism and Discipleship. In addition, before coming to Tampa, he was a contract worker in
the Church Planting Department of our Baptist Convention. Continued on Page 2

In addition, before coming to
Tampa, he was a contract
worker in the Church Planting
Department of our Baptist
Convention. Eloy earned a
Master of Divinity degree from
Luther Rice Seminary. His
greatest joy – other than Jesus
Christ being His Lord and
Savior – is his family...his wife
of 35 years, Sol, and his six
children: Gabriel, Joel, Esther,
Samuel, Daniel, and Analise
(now in Glory). In his spare
time, Pastor Eloy also enjoys playing basketball, other
sports, and being with his family as much as possible.

MIKE KAHN (Cont. from Pg. 1)
Mike also oversaw the Adult Sunday School Ministry, Men’s &
Women’s Ministry, and taught the Evangelism Explosion and
F.A.I.T.H. training.
Mike’s passion is living out the Great Commandment and the Great
Commission while teaching others to do the same. He believes that
churches must focus on obeying the essentials. In addition to the
Great Commandment and Great Commission, these essentials are
having authentic, accountable friendships; building strong marriages;
living in sexual purity; and being mighty in prayer.
The Kahn family lives in northwest Tampa near Teena’s parents and
Mike’s mother. Mike greatly enjoys being with his family and friends,
exercising (walking, tennis, swimming), reading (A. W. Tozer is his
favorite), and college football (Gators, Seminoles, and Bulls). We are
honored to have Pastor Mike Kahn as our September Luncheon
Guest Speaker!

SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER A SMART, GENEROUS SERVANT...MARY EMMA HOWARD
MEET MARY EMMA HOWARD
Mary Emma Howard is a Christ-loving believer with a heart for
service. She and her ten-year-old Shi Tzu named Shadow live
in Tampa. They both love Idlewild Baptist Church and the Bible
preaching of Pastor Ken Whitten.
Mary Emma was 9 or 10 when saved during a revival at East
Thonotosassa Baptist Church. Her family moved to Tampa four
years later and she began attending El Bethel Baptist Church in
Seminole Heights. Even at this early age, she was service-
minded as she began teaching younger children. After high
school, Mary Emma went to nursing school in Orlando and
attended Delaney Street Baptist Church. While in nursing
school, she went to New Orleans for six months to attend her
first Billy Graham Crusade and served as a counselor.
Altogether, she has been to and served at four crusades.
Mary Emma was married to John Howard in 1957. She met
John while working as a nurse in a doctor’s office where he was a patient. She loved John
who was an avid reader with an evangelist’s heart. He would speak to anyone and everyone
about Jesus. That was just one of the many things she loved about him. Mary Emma joined
Idlewild in 1957. In 1959 her only child, Charlene, was born. Charlene grew up, married a
doctor and now lives in Charleston, SC.
Mary Emma and John loved traveling to the North Carolina Mountains and bought some lots
with a shell home there. Over many weekends they traveled to North Carolina to work on the
home, doing drywall, plumbing, bathrooms...everything! Mary Emma also loved to go on
short-term mission trips. She went on her first trip before she attended Idlewild. She has
been on short-term mission trips with Dr. Bala Rao of Idlewild. She used her nursing
experience and education for interviewing and preparation work on several medical mission
trips to Guatemala, Honduras, Bolivia, and the Dominican Republic. Mary Emma also loved
(and still loves) the Idlewild choir. She sang as long as she was able and enjoyed the Greece
and England choir trips.
Shortly after Mary Emma retired from the public health service in 1998, her beloved John
passed away. In 2017, Mary Emma made a tough decision. She could no longer travel up to
North Carolina to enjoy the home she and John built together. She wanted to see the home
that she and John had worked on so hard be a blessing for the Lord just as it had been a
blessing for them.

MEET MARY EMMA HOWARD (Cont.)
She chose to give the beloved North
Carolina home to Idlewild Baptist
Church and gain the tax advantage of
giving before selling. Because Mary
Emma loves the Sulphur Springs area,
she designated her gift to be used at
Idlewild at the Springs. She believes
the old saying,
“Do your giving while you’re living, so
you’ll be knowing where it’s going!”
Mary Emma Howard is a wise senior
adult who understands the blessing of
giving. The Idlewild Foundation was pleased to have the opportunity to facilitate her very
generous donation. The Foundation’s mission includes motivating, educating, and facilitating
generous giving to promote the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
NOTE: THANKS TO JOHN CAMPBELL, DIRECTOR, OF THE IDLEWILD FOUNDATION FOR SHARING
THEIR NEWSLETTER INFORMATION WITH US.

SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER ON MISSION IN CUBA
Page 6
BY BEULAH CAMPBELL
My mission trip to San Luis, Cuba on
June 23-30, 2018 was an enjoyable
and productive one. These trips are
getting better and better. I give thanks
to Jesus for this.
I enjoyed worshipping with the Cuban
people. At each service, young and
old came together in active
expressions. Near the end of the
service, the young would come to the
front singing and praising God. I loved the music but did not
know their words, but I knew the English words for some songs.
We visited homes each morning for 4 days, walking for
miles on bad roads at temperatures of 95% or higher,
and rain. Church members had scheduled times with
their family, friends, and neighbors as much as 4 days
in advance, so we could come and share the Gospel
with them. We shared with many people and most of
them confessed their sin, asking Jesus to be their
Savior. WOW! What joy seeing Ephesians 2:8-9 put
into action.

SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER ON MISSION IN CUBA (CONT.)
On Monday through Thursday nights, we spent time training
and teaching on “How to Pray the Psalms.” Our leader, Dana,
did an excellent job as he let the Holy Spirit direct us each
night. It was a great time of sharing. I started practicing
“Praying the Psalms” before we left for Cuba and I can
honestly say that my prayer time became more meaningful.
Other interesting things – prayers were answered, and I had
no trouble with my leg – no pain. My body always feels better
when I am on mission than when I am at home. We worked
together nicely as a team and I met someone on the team who
was willing to help me with my many home projects. Praise
the Lord! He has already been over to “survey” my requests.
Thank you for your prayers. I know the prayer of the righteous is powerful and
effective, James 5:16b, even when difficulties happen.

SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER A GREAT LESSON ON STRESS
Page 10
A young lady confidently walked around the room with a raised glass of water while leading a
seminar and explaining stress management to her audience. Everyone knew she was going to ask
the ultimate question, 'Half empty or half full?' She fooled them all. "How heavy is this glass of
water?" she inquired with a smile. Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. to 20 oz.
She replied, "The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a
minute, that's not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a
day, you'll have to call an ambulance. In each case it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the
heavier it becomes." She continued, "and that's the way it is with stress. If we carry our burdens all
the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won't be able to carry on."
As Christians, we need to put down our burdens at the feet of Jesus. (Psalm 68:19 “Praise be to the
Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens.) He is our burden-bearer and the only One
who can carry our burdens successfully. So...as early in the evening as you can, lay all your burdens
down. Don't carry them through the evening and into the night. Go to the Lord in prayer and ask Him
to carry them for you and to give you His peace concerning each situation.
Just a few other thoughts to give you a chuckle……
1. Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.
2. Drive carefully... It's not only cars that can be recalled by their Maker.
3. If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.
4. Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won't have a leg to stand
on.
5. Since it's the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late.
6. The second mouse gets the cheese.
7. When everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane.
8. Some mistakes are too much fun to make only once.
9. We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty, and some are dull. Some
have weird names and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box.
10. A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.
11. Save the earth..... It's the only planet with chocolate!
14. They say the key to understanding a person is to walk a mile in their shoes. After that, who
cares? They’re a mile away and you have their shoes!
LOL!

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to bite your tail so hard; I was only teasing.

OK, on three, we all roll over.

Don't worry, Larry, they'll have to go through me if they want to take
