LCMH Hosted its Annual Remembrance Service in Honor of Babies Who Have Left the Earth Too SoonAnne Marie Ross, Events & Publications Coordinator

Little Company of Mary hosted its Annual Remembrance Service in honor of babies who have left the earth too soon. The ceremony took place on May 22, 2016 in the Cherished Angel Garden, directly north of the Hospital. The Garden was dedicated in remembrance of babies who have passed away and offers a place for family and friends to grieve and reflect upon the loss. This is the eighth year that the Remembrance Service has been celebrated, with a butterfly release closing the ceremony.

On June 1st, LCMH celebrated the opening of its newly renovated 4SW Orthopedic/Surgical Nursing Unit and a special photography exhibit by Saint Xavier University (SXU) students. The students’ photography will permanently grace the walls of the hospital, inspiring healing for both current patients and as our healthcare ministry continues for future generations.

Designed to mirror the hospital’s West Pavilion patient tower, the new 4SW orthopedic unit at LCMH consists of 12 patient rooms complete with wooden floors, private bathrooms and full-size pullout beds for visitors. The photography exhibit by SXU students adds a familiar feel and a sense of home to the hospital’s newest unit, giving patients the opportunity to admire beautiful, well-known local landscapes during their hospital stay. Some of the photographs lining the walls of the unit’s hallway and inside of patient rooms include: Rainbow Cone, Lake Katherine and the Beverly Unitarian Church, also known as “The Castle.”

Rounds Inspired Employees on a Mission of Caring and Wellness

Happy Birthday America!Eileen McNichols, Director Health Promotions/Pastoral Care

July is a fun month. We’re able to enjoy all the benefits of the summer season with outdoor activities, such as picnics, family reunions, beach and pool time with the family. We will kick the month off right with wonderful celebrations of the birth of this nation on the Fourth of July. According to the United States Department of Homeland Security there were eight deaths and 11,400 reported injuries in the United States related to fireworks in 2015. Even sparklers present danger especially to children. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees – hot enough to burn some metals, not to mention the delicate skin of child’s body. So while we bask in the glory of summer, let’s enjoy a safe and happy Fourth of July this year.

• Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.

• Avoid buying fireworks that are packaged in brown paper because this is often a sign that the fireworks were made for professional displays, which could pose a danger to consumers.

• Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities. • Back up to a safe distance immediately after

lighting fireworks.• Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks

that have not ignited fully.• Never point or throw fireworks at another person.• Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy

in case of fire or other mishap.• Light fireworks one at a time, then move

back quickly.

• Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers.

• After fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding it to prevent a trash fire.

• Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.

If you do experience an injury or any health problem, you can easily and conveniently schedule appointments for the Little Company of Mary Emergency Department and Urgent Care locations on line at www.lcmh.org/onlinescheduling.

In addition to enjoying the concerts and fireworks displays in our community and throughout

the nation, take a minute to thank a veteran for his/her service to our great nation. These brave men and women risk not only their personal safety, but life and limb so that we can enjoy the freedom we sometimes take for granted. Their bravery and sacrifice is the ultimate gift to each and every one of the citizens of this great country.

If you would like to thank a member of our military currently serving, send a card or note to A Million Thanks, 17853 Santiago Blvd. #107-355, Villa Park, CA 92861.

R Inspired Employees on a Mission of Caring and Wellness

The Employee Wellness Committee presents “Race 2 Rio” Team Walking Challenge. Let’s celebrate the Summer Olympics by following the Olympic torch through Brazil!

Being physically active is important for overall

wellness, yet 80 percent of adults don’t get enough physical activity to maintain good health. The American Heart Association (www.heart.org) recommends at least 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise for adults. 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week is an easy goal to remember. Even short 10 minute activity sessions can be added up over the week to reach this goal. Join the team walking challenge to get the recommended amount of physical activity and have fun at the same time by following the Olympic torch through Brazil.

During this 4 week challenge, teams of 12 will travel from Sao Lourenco de Oeste to Rio de Janeiro following the torch route.

The route totals 1,339 miles or approximately 7500 steps per team member/day!

During the challenge, participants will track their steps online at www.myhmihealth.com OR www.walkingworks.com. (See registration form for details)

Awards and PrizesAll participants will earn 25 wellness points for participating. Participants with at least 125 total points by 8/31 will be entered into the “Time Out for Wellness” Raffle for one of 5 prizes valued at $100 each.

The team with the highest average steps during the challenge wins! Members of the winning team will earn an additional 10 points.

The Top Walker OVERALL will earn 1 PTO Day! Winner’s activity log will be validated prior to awarding prize via dashboard report/data export from Fitbit or other device.

The Top 10 Walkers will each receive an additional 10 wellness points.

To participate, complete the 2016 Walking Challenge Registration Form at http://goo.gl/forms/vFzvLweZMm by Wednesday, July 20th.

July 8

R Inspired Employees on a Mission of Caring and Wellness

The goal of the Patient Care Experience Committee is to assure we put our patients first. We want every patient’s encounter with Little Company of Mary Hospital to be positive from the moment they enter the hospital to the moment they leave. The team will assist in implementing initiatives to promote a positive patient experience. This month begins our first initiative; a monthly article in the Rounds to provide staff with information on improving the patient experience. In honor of the celebration of Independence Day we have titled this article “The Stars and Stripes of Patient Care”. Happy July 4th!

From the Patient Care Experience Committee 1. Let me sleep. Do not take vitals throughout the

night or draw blood between 10pm and 6am, unless it is critical.

2. Keep the noise levels down at the nurses’ station. 3. Don’t lose my personal belongings. When you

take care of my belongings you are taking care of me.

4. Knock on the door before entering. This shows respect for me as an individual and my privacy. Introduce yourself to me and make eye contact when you talk to me. Ask how I would like to be addressed.

5. Please keep my white board current and up to date. It gives me a quick reference of who is caring for me and my daily plan.

6. Update me and my family if you notice changes in my condition. Keep communication open. Please keep me informed of delays. It lessens my anxiety during an already stressful time.

7. Keep my room clean. 8. Listen to me and engage me in my care. Use plain

language, and make sure I understand my plan of care.

9. Please orient me to my room and the hospital, so I know where important things are located.

10. Please maintain professionalism in ALL areas of the hospital. While you may be on your break, you are still a hospital employee and a reflection of the hospital. How I perceive you is often how I perceive the hospital and care that I am receiving.

11. Make sure everyone understands all of the above!

Task-force Implemented to Reduce Hospital-Acquired InfectionsAndrey Ibragimov, RN, Manager of Surgery and Task Force Team Member

In response to organization-wide initiatives related to higher than expected rates of surgical SSI associated with colon surgery, a multidisciplinary taskforce with a goal of reducing hospital-acquired infections has been implemented at LCMH. The task force consists of several departments at LCMH, including: Quality Resources, Pharmacy, Infection Prevention, General Surgery, Materials Management Services, Environmental Services, and Employee Education.

“The taskforce team met and reviewed evidence from leading institutions in addition to the latest studies and research to find evidence-based solutions for our patients,” said Andrey Ibragimov, RN, Manager of Surgery and Taskforce Team Member. “We are committed to providing an improved patient experience and spreading the good works being performed here each and every day.”

As a result of the meeting, the task force has created a colorectal bundle which includes a Surgical Site Infection (SSI) Prevention Checklist for Colorectal Protocol. The checklist is utilized to track patients through their healthcare journey, from procedure preparation to post-procedure.

LCMH is committed to providing our patients quality healthcare. If you have any questions about this initiative, contact Carlene at ext. 5689 or myself at ext. 4062.

7 West Nurse Receives the DAISY Award for ExcellenceLee Batsakis, Public Relations and Marketing Specialist

Congratulations to Neil Duggan, RN, 7 West, who recently received the DAISY Award LCMH. A patient nominated Neil and listed the below reason why he is so very deserving of the Daisy Award:

“Neil was the most outstanding concerned nurse I have ever met in my entire life and dealings with your hospital. He just over-exceeded care, help, concern, and got me the information needed when requested. Neil deserves the Daisy Award. He overdid his job as a nurse and I will forever be in his debt. I pray others are ½ that Neil is. He is an asset to represent your hospital. He does extraordinary and compassionate care. God Bless Neil.”

Reducing Overhead Pages and Noise Creates a Healing Environment for Our PatientsMary Jo Quick, Vice President Mission and Spirituality

Dear LCMH Staff:In an effort to reduce noise and unnecessary distraction to our patients, we will be reducing the amount of non-clinical overhead pages to the best of our ability. Studies show that there is much noise in a hospital setting that causes distraction and even discomfortto our patients who are already suffering with health challenges and we have an opportunity to perhaps improve the atmosphere around them by making some small changes. Every effort will be made to limit our overhead pages to those critical and clinical pagesonly. Please remember you can always use page gate to the audience you are interested in capturing the attention of.

We are counting on the cooperation of everyone in this initiative. Pages that announce events, meetings, special liturgies will no longer be heard on the overhead system. We will not announce visiting hours or daily mass. We WILL continue to begin and end our days with a prayer; we believe the benefit of prayercan be healing and a ‘welcome’ distraction.

Code 70 and life safety mandatory drills will be announced.

Additionally, it’s very important not to express your dissatisfaction to our operators or try to negotiate your position with them-your direct manager should consult with his or her VP on any change in this protocol.

Finally, also please remember, this is an attempt to create a healing environment for our patients and we are at the crucial beginning of some behavioral changes on all of our parts. Let’s try for a collaborative spirit.Thank you.
