Favorite Outdoor Activity: Climbing

Past Trips/Experience: I did a 3 week Outward Bound course where we did white water canoeing, backpacking and rock climbing. I did Buckwild in the summer of 2014, and ever since becoming a leader I have been outdoors plenty, doing cross country skiing, backpacking and navigating through a lot of snow.

Fun Fact: I ride around campus on a green or red skateboard depending on whether or not it’s raining. Clara’s sock collection is far superior to my own, but I’m afraid to admit it.

Fun Fact: I swam throughout high school, and I have a twin sister.

Past Trips/Experience: My first year I went backpacking and climbing, my second year I lead cycle-touring, and my third year I lead Unpacked. I’ve been hiking and camping my whole life!

Fun Fact I once got detention for not wearing shoes in school.

Fun Fact: I went to an international boarding high school with 200 kids from 70 countries located in the middle of nowhere of New Mexico. It was fun. We had hot springs.

Past Trips/Experience: I have hiked Machu Picchu with my family and backpacked across australia for a month! With OEL I have gone climbing, paddling, backpacking and spent 10 days in Utah doing various outdoor activities!

Fun Fact: Avatar is my favorite movie and I have dual citizenship (US and Sweden).

Favorite Outdoor Activity: hiking and camping

Past Trips/Experience: I love travelling a lot, but I didn’t start the real outdoor trips until I got to Bucknell. I’ve been to Ohio State park for fall break, tried white water rafting for the first time but fell over, and biked on the trail for the first time and did 33 miles. I’ve been to Adirondacks for spring break and will be in Utah for the next spring break. I almost started from ground zero. If I can make it, you can do it!

Fun Fact: Some friends say that I’m high-key savage, who knows?

Name: Leah Chowenhill

Class Year: 2019

Major: Electrical Engineering (minor in mathematics and physics)

Interests: hiking, rowing, gardening, watching movies, stargazing, hammocking

Favorite Outdoor Activity: BACKPACKING, wakeboarding

Past Trips/Experience: I led Black Forest Trail Backpacking during Buckwild ‘17 and had to medically assist one of my participants who was bitten by a Timber Rattlesnake on the trail. Never fear, everything was handled properly and the participant was able to safely complete the trip. This is what we leaders like to call type 2 fun. I backpacked through Moab, Utah during Spring Break ‘17 and spent a month in Iceland during Summer ‘17. I will be abroad during the spring semester of 2018 in Sydney, Australia and will definitely be hitting the trails as much as possible!

Fun Fact: I’ve seen over 100 music artists perform live, and I can identify over 300 different types of Japanese maple tree (one day this skill will come in handy I’m sure).

Name: Johnathan “Chief” Coleman Hometown: Long Beach, CA

Class Year: 2019

Major: Philosophy and Political Science

Interests: Playing Water Polo, Reading, Dancing (I am most certainly an Amateur), anything that gets me out of my dorm and into the fresh air, Driving my Hummer next to a bike

Favorite Outdoor Activity: Caving!!!!!!!!!!!

Past Trips/Experience: As a participant I went on Climbing and Caving and had a blast. I love caves. This past year I got to relive my dream and lead Climbing and Caving and let me tell you it was even better. I’ve also been to J Tree in California several times to boulder. I know how to Bushwack, let’s just hope we don’t have to do it, and read a compass. I’m kind of like Allstate with me there you’ll be in good hands.

Fun Fact: I constantly have music playing in my head so if you see me dancing don’t be afraid. I can also teach you proper campfire sitting etiquette.

Major: Civil Engineering, Experimental Philosophy

Interests: Hiking, Camping, Snowmobiling, Swimming. Lover of Cheesesteaks.

Favorite Outdoor Activity: Snowmobiling

Past Trips/Experience: As a Buckwild participant, I was part of the Ricketts’ Glen Basecamp. Since then, I’ve led the Adventure Race, backpacked in Vermont and Pennsylvania, and spent a week canoeing in the Adirondacks. I spent Spring Break backpacking, mountain biking, and canyoneering in Utah’s Canyonlands!

Fun Fact: I’m a big classical music fan! I play violin, and have played in places like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland and the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia.

Name: Kaitlyn Kurdziel

Past Trips/Experience: My first camping experience was on my Buckwild trip freshman year at Ohiopyle basecamp. I have gone rafting at the National Whitewater Center in NC and on the James River.

Fun Fact: I have climbed an active volcano.

Fun Fact I played rooster in the musical “Annie”, I had a pet koi fish named nugget. I drive a prius and haven’t eaten meat in 13 years. If I had a dog, I would name it Pringles. I hate trucks and guns.

Favorite Outdoor Activity: Hammocking outside on a glorious fall day

Past Trips/Experience: I did a hiking and camping tour of U.S. national parks on the West Coast, as well as skiing and sledding (!!!) in the Midwest. I did the Adventure Race for my BuckWild trip and it was rockin.

Fun Fact I connect on a personal level to Mushu from Mulan Also, I was an extra in the movie Divergent #blessup. I have strong animal magnetism. Nuts. I am also an ordained minister, but exclusively for dog weddings.

Major: Political Science and History

Interests: Traveling, Hiking, Water Polo, and movies are some of my interests, and quoting She’s the Man with Kathleen, and parent trap with Sarah Shocat

Favorite Outdoor Activity: Hiking and Swimming are two of my favorites.

Past Trips/Experience: Are you done Backpacking and rock climbing in the Grand Tetons, hiking in the sierras, and just last year I went backpacking with my sister in the swiss alps and the black forest in Germany.

Fun Fact: My spirit animal is D.W. Read from Arthur. Grandparents love me and I get traffic updates on my phone every 15 minutes!! Also, fun fact, only 3 minutes after this picture was taken, we saw a baby chick run from the trees chased by a giant iguana.

Favorite Outdoor Activity: Hiking up to a beautiful view.

Past Trips/Experience: The summer before I came to college I went on a three week long backpacking trip in the Sierra’s. Before that three week trip I had gone out backpacking for a week each year (starting freshman year) to Yosemite, or Redwood National Park. I have also gone rock climbing and rappelling over various weekends to Joshua Tree National Park.

Fun Fact: I have an identical twin, I’m a dual citizen (US & European Union), and I know all the words to the song “All Star” by Smash Mouth

Major: Biomedical Engineering

Interests: Running, Soccer, Canoeing, Paddle Boarding, Swimming, Sailing, Hiking, Backpacking, Canyoneering, Mountain Biking

Favorite Outdoor Activity: Being near water.

Past Trips/Experience: I participated in the Buckwild trip, Climbing and Caving 2 Hot to Handle and I led Climbing and Caving 1 my sophomore and junior year. One time my family went to Zion National Park in Utah and we climbed 21 switchbacks up to Angel’s Landing but never made it to the top because my parents thought we were going to fall off. I got mad at them and then they bought a picture of the hike just to tease me. Someday my sister and I are going to go back and climb it. My family has a cottage on Lake Ontario so we like to canoe and partake in various other water sports.

Fun Fact: I am a vegetarian and I love eating protein bars more than anything (except dessert). One time, I saw Eddie Murphy on a plane, and he told me I had the perfect voice to be the daughter of Fiona. I never ever let the microwave complete the time and beep because one time I did and i regretted it.

Interests: Environmentalism, traveling, writing, cats, and tea

Favorite Outdoor Activity: SCUBA diving (especially technical, deep (100’+), and spear-fishing dives)

Past Trips/Experience: I did A-Race as a first year, and have done on-campus logistics work for the past two years. While I prefer behind-the-scenes work, I also been skiing my whole life, have hiked several of Colorado’s 14er’s, and have canoed the Boundary Waters. I enjoy white water rafting, waterfall spelunking, and long walks on the beach.

Fun Fact: One million seconds is approximately 12 days, while one billion seconds is approximately 31 years

Major: Chemical Engineering

Interests: the world around me, running, canoeing/sailing/swimming/almost anything on a lake, artsy crafty creativeness, skiing (telemark anyone?), hiking/walking aimlessly

Favorite Outdoor Activity: canoeing

Past Trips/Experience: My parents took me canoe camping starting when I was two years old (they had fun dealing with a hyper little me on that trip) shortly followed by teaching me how to hike (by snack bribery of coarse), ski, and race in whitewater canoe slalom (but on not so white water) when I was three. I have been on many canoe camping trips since then, including Buckwild’s Paddling on the Susie Q. I have also done many day trips up mountains in the Adirondacks and in Maine. Also, last year I led the Rickett's Glen base camp trip for Buckwild.

Fun Fact: My favorite foods are sandwiches and I excel at GIS

Name: Abbie Winter

Hometown: Easton, CT

Class Year: 2019

Major: Biology & Environmental Science

Interests: Knitting, plants, knitting plants, eating cereal, & appropriately-lengthed walks on beaches

Favorite Outdoor Activity: Climbing things (usually trees but I don’t discriminate). The cactus (Mitchell) featured in the photo was the first cactus I have ever climbed, and I just entered the 82nd Annual Cactus Climbing Competition in Columbus, Ohio to gain more experience.

Past Trips/Experience: Backpacking, rock climbing, caving, hiking, kayaking, skiing, I dabbled in sailing one time, and paddleboarding

Fun Fact: Beehives are in fact dark inside which I didn’t really think about until this year on account of the fact that 90% of my knowledge of bees is based on the Bee Movie. I believe hiccups are a government conspiracy theory. I have longer legs than Zac Efron.

Fun Fact: The bald eagle is my favorite endangered species act success story. Also I once had the hiccups for seven straight months. Gluten has me in a chokehold.

Interests: Hammocking (sometimes I even break Ben’s hammock), running, ice skating, MY DOG, plants, astronomy, space.

Favorite Outdoor Activity: Hiking/backpacking

Past Trips/Experience: I went paddling on my freshman trip it was lit. Also I’ve been paddling on Mars, it was out of this world. I led Ohiopyle last year, we had fun! Also I’ve gone backpacking and tenting lots. And I’m an aspiring Adirondack 46er!

Fun Fact: I can recite the entire periodic table from memory AND in increasing atomic order.

Interests: Any and all animals (the more the name sounds like the word elephant the better), stars, wondering if I could ever be a universal unit of measure.

Favorite Outdoor Activity: rolling down hills

Past Trips/Experience: Hiking/Backpacking, skiing, and skating on ice (different than ice skating).

Fun Fact: Yes, this is a fun fact: During WWII, the United States tried to develop a “bat bomb,” where they would fly over an enemy territory and release tons of bats, each with a small firecracker attached to them. The idea was that the bats could all start small fires in hard to reach places, which would eventually become large fires, and destroy an area. The idea never panned out, but about $2 million was spent on research for it. I have two rabbits, one named Henry, and the other named Larry. I found them in Indiana and kept them. Also my goal in life is to never let the tradition of flat Stanley die.

Past Trips/Experience: Hiking the Salkantay Trek in Peru, bro-ing out in the Adirondack Mountains, ice climbing in Colorado, and doing some climbing, caving, and backpacking with Buckwild

Fun Fact: I can spin a basketball on my finger, I cannot hula-hoop even if my life depended on it, and I was Shrek. (Also, that silly boi in the background is my roommate!)

Interests: Laughing at my own jokes (out loud or in my head), watching Avatar: The Last Airbender, looking at maps, buying fancy overpriced chairs

Past Trips/Experience: I hike and paddle sometimes

Fun Fact: Yawns are contagious. I am addicted to snapchat (this is actually a serious condition that I was diagnosed with. The doctor said if I don’t ever respond to a snapchat I might die). I like all kinds of music. Spongebob and Avatar references are applicable in every situation. I have a shrine dedicated to the death of vine. Also I steal dirty socks from people's laundry and wear them when I am alone.

Favorite Outdoor Activity: Hiking

Past Trips/Experience: I have hiked in 7 national parks! And have gone caving, white-water rafting in Costa Rica, paddleboarding, backpacking, and waterfall rappelling. I also once had an intimate experience with a deer.

Fun Fact: I am hard of hearing so scream in my ears if you want me to hear you. I smile to hide my shame. I was also asked by Nicholas Cage if I would be his stunt double for National Treasure but graciously turned him down.

Past Trips/Experience: I like to travel as much as I can. I love the rockies and try to ski/hike there every year

Favorite Outdoor Activity: Whitewater Kayaking and Skiing

Past Trips/Experience: I have hiked, climbed, canyoneered, and mountain biked throughout North Carolina and Tennessee. I have WW kayaked throughout the mid-atlantic region and I hiked Mt. Washington with 60 m.p.h. winds

Fun Fact: I am always up for a riddle and I have almost broken my car window because I was listening/dancing to spanish music.

Favorite Outdoor Activity: Hiking and swimming

Past Trips/Experience: As a BuckWild participant, I did the Ricketts Glenn trip and I lead that same trip last year. I’ve also hiked in the Adirondacks and the Alps!

Fun Fact: My friends tell me I vaguely resemble Steve Buscemi and honestly I kinda see it. Also, this pic was taken moments before Peter Leary pushed me down that hole. Don’t worry, I’m fine. Sometimes I eat raw pasta because I think it will help me grow.

Name: Savannah Weaver

Class Year: 2020

Majors: Environmental Science & Biology

Interests: Water polo, swimming (especially in the ocean), surfing (although I’m terrible), hiking, star-gazing, travel, FOOD, music/concerts, books. I also love watching basketball - GO WARRIORS!

Favorite Outdoor Activity: Really anything water related because I was definitely a fish in a past life.

Past Trips/Experience: My family was very outdoorsy and would take long summer road trips, camping at cool places along the way and I was a summer camp leader for 4 summers. I did the Ricketts Glen Basecamp trip as a participant and led it last year - live love RG3!!!

Fun Fact: I have watched every episode of friends at least twice and when I was in high school I had a pet bunny named Indiana Jones.

Name: Carrie Baeckstrom

Hometown: Cherry Hill, NJ

Class Year: 2021

Major: Early Childhood Education/Psychology

Interests: Swimming, running, biking, swimming in all kinds of bodies of water, rereading my favorite books

Favorite Outdoor Activity: Swimming

Past Trips/Experience: I was a participant on the Ricketts Glen trip, I’ve been hiking in the Grand Canyon, Sedona, and other moderately cool places, and I enjoy skiing, swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking.

Fun Fact: I can quote the entirety of Jurassic Park and ride a bike with no hands (but not at the same time.)

Interests: Drawing/painting, music, cooking, swimming, exploring

Favorite Outdoor Activity: Hiking

Past Trips/Experience: I participated in the Rickets Glenn Basecamp trip as an incoming first year and had the opportunity to participate in the 2017 May Trip. Outside of OEL, I have explored and hiked at various places in Southern California such as the Malibu Creek Trail, Sapphire Falls Trail, Mount Baldy, and the Claremont Loop.

Fun Fact: I was born with glass bones and paper skin. Every morning I break my legs, and every afternoon I break my arms. At night, I lie awake in agony until my heart attacks put me to sleep.

Major: Biomedical Engineering

Interests: THE BEACH, anything chocolate or ice cream related, golden doodles, good music (aka nothing they play on the radio)

Favorite Outdoor Activity: surfing, skiing, kayaking, fishing, soccer, hiking

Past Trips/Experience: I was on the Ricketts Glen trip for BuckWild, which was my first camping experience! Last spring, I went mountain biking, canyoneering, and backpacking in Utah. This fall, I spent my semester abroad in Australia and traveled around New Zealand too. My favorite parts were hiking the Blue Mountains, climbing the Glasshouse Mountains, and kayaking/snorkeling around the Whitsunday Islands :))

Name: Katie Charcalis

Class Year: 2021

Major: Probably psychology

Interests: Sloths, hiphop dancercizing (i can teach you all), avocados, shake shack - I cried after eating it one time because it was just so good, doing art, being buckWIILD on the daily (yes i coined that phrase), protecting the world from R. Kelly, Bob Ross, my dog (she’s royalty… I’ll explain this at some point), talking, and laughing

Favorite Outdoor Activity: I like to be one with nature definitely but I really like to hike and sleep outside and see really beautiful things that you can’t see in the city

Past Trips/Experience: I went to camp every summer since I was 12 where we slept outside and had no phones and everything, and then I went on the Old Loggers Buckwild trip before my freshman year and it was flippin awesome :) :) :)

Fun Fact: Oh where to begin... I can tell you the entire geography of Africa, I hopped on a random train at grand central hoping that I would make it home, I currently use a burner phone because my iphone broke (another explanation needed…) You can ask me for more facts in person :)

Interests: Trees, my little pony, and bingo night at the senior center

Favorite Outdoor Activity: Just about all of them.

Past Trips/Experience: I’ve been backpacking in Ohio and Texas, hiking in Peru and Ecuador, and gone on canoeing and kayaking trips in Maine.

Fun Fact: I have swam to Mexico from the shore of Mexico. So basically I swam in Mexico. Actually it was more like I waded around on the beach of Mexico. Also it was NEW Mexico, which I guess is better because it’s newer.
