Megaphone diplomacy run amok………………….

I don’t know about you but it gives me the collywobbles when I

hear the President of the most powerful nation on earth using

Twitter to issue dire warnings and threats. The situation is further

complicated by the involvement of Russia and Iran as backers of

Assad’s Syrian regime. The whole scenario takes us back to the

height of the cold war when the prospect of a nuclear conflict

seemed all too real. Back then we frequently prayed in our Sunday

prayer of the faithful that the world would be spared the horror of a

nuclear holocaust in which there would be no winners.

With Putin in Russia set for life as a modern-day Tsar, a volatile Iran with no love for the west and a

Syrian regime that is hell bent on wrestling back control of Syria at any cost, the result is a dangerous

and volatile cocktail that could herald unthinkable catastrophe on the planet.

Does Donald Trump really think it appropriate in his unique position, to trade threats and insults on

social media platforms? While the man may well have

excelled in the world of corporate business in the US it is

patently clear that he has no experience in the political

arena and his unstable hand on the levers of power are

surely cause for all our concern.

Without doubt the Assad’s of this world need reining in,

the unconscionable use of chemical weapons is utterly

reprehensible in the mind of every right-thinking person,

and a response is called for, but on Twitter? If a nuclear

conflict were to erupt it would be a war like the world has

never seen before, fought not on the battlefield but from

concrete clad bunkers deep in the earth with computers

controlling the missiles. It’s a scenario too horrible to

contemplate.

So, it’s back to prayer. We do need to pray each and every

day that conflict can be defused and reason and diplomacy

prevail. What a sad reality that in a world of such

abundance, people starve and suffer, while billions are

spent on weapons of destruction. Have mercy on us O

Lord, for we have sinned against you.

How do I report illegal dumping? If a local authority can establish who owns

material that has been illegally dumped, the

owner has a case to answer, even if they haven’t

been caught in the act of dumping. In addition,

local authorities can require a householder or

business operator to indicate how and where they

are disposing of their waste. This can be relevant

if the person does not use a refuse collection

service or bring their waste to an authorised

disposal facility.

Presently, the on-the-spot fine for littering under

the Litter Pollution Act 1997, (as amended) is

€150. If the matter is brought to the District Court

and the offender is found guilty, the maximum

fine can be up to €3,000.

If you are aware of illegal dumping, litter or

pollution incidents, you can report it to your local

authority, so that it can investigate and take any

necessary enforcement action. To report illegal

dumping you can contact South Dublin County

Council by email at: [email protected] or by

phone at 01-4149000. Alternatively, you can

report it to the 24-hour lo-call National

Environmental Complaints Line at: 1850 365 121.

Details of the complaint

will be passed to the local

authority, the Garda

Síochána or the

Environmental Protection

Agency, as appropriate.

There is a long

standing agreement

with political parties

and independent

politicians that Lucan Village is kept poster free

during elections and referenda. We are very

anxious that this will apply to the upcoming

referendum on the eighth amendment.

It’s very important for Lucan Tidy Towns that

there are no posters and tie wraps on view when

the national adjudication of the Tidy Towns

competition comes around in June or July.

So we are appealing to the parties and

independents to keep Lucan Village poster free.

There is also the possibility that non political

groups may decide to put up posters. We want to

appeal to these groups to observe the no poster

agreement also.

We would like the poster free zone to include the

whole area inside the four welcome stones at the

principal road entrances to the Village as this is

where our Tidy Towns group operates. If any

group needs further information on the area in

question they can contact us

Esker Active Retirement Association Hi all. Well since I last put pen to paper, we had

a great four day trip to Ennistymon, Co Clare

where we were very lucky with the weather. We

had our first day trip to the Cliffs of Moher and

the sun shone so we really got to appreciate all the

beautiful scenery it had to offer. We stayed in the

Falls Hotel and we were very well looked after.

The food was excellent as were the rooms and the

service. We had some really good groups singing

each night in the lounge and as usual our lively lot

hit the dance floor very quickly after dinner and

danced and sang the night away – every night!!!

We had our resident “Pretty Woman” with us who

had us laughing till our faces hurt. Marie, Helen,

Catherine and Joy gave us some really good

entertainment indeed. To our group organiser

Hilda, we want to say well done, we all

thoroughly enjoyed the trip.

We’ve had a few weeks break and were back

today (Wed) at our club with a big crowd rearing

to go. Stephen our football coach put us through

our paces in the warm-up followed by walking

football where Mary scored a hat trick today!!

Wasn’t happy – she was on our opposing team –

we got slaughtered this week. Need more

practice guys! We followed this with indoor

bowls, scrabble and whist. Some great craic and

great to catch-up with everyone again.

Anyone who has not renewed their Membership

in our Club needs to do so very soon or your

name will be taken off our Members List. Fee is

€20 for the year and weekly fee of €3 when you

attend our club each week.

Anyone wanting to join, just come to the club on

April Flatters to Deceive

The Romans gave this month the Latin name

Aprilis. It is thought to come from the verb

“aperire”, “to open”. This refers to the time of

year trees and flowers begin to bloom. The normal April maximum temperature in

Dublin is about 13 degrees Celsius. August is the

month with a similar angle of sunshine. The

normal August maximum temperature is 19

degrees. This difference seems surprising,

however, this can be explained by different

factors. This Irish Sea temperature in April is

about 9 degrees and in August it is almost 15

degrees. The sea heats up and cools down much

more slowly than the land. The air temperature in

April is affected by the cold Irish Sea and also by

the cold Atlantic.

Another factor is the approach

towards Ireland of cold air

which has been building up

over the long winter. This comes

in the form of anticyclones from

Europe, Siberia, Scandinavia and

Greenland. This tends to suppress April’s

temperature. On the plus side the cold sea and

sometimes cold wind leads to good sunshine and

also to lower rainfall than at other times of the

year. April showers certainly occur but they tend

not to amount to a lot of rain. April (mid-spring)

is often as sunny as July (mid-summer). July is a

lot warmer of course with a maximum

temperature close to 20 degrees.

One way that April flatters

(promises) to deceive (breaks

promises) is when we have a

cheerful sunny day. From

indoors the weather looks very

promising but on stepping outside it feels much

colder than it looks. The American poet, Robert

Frost, reminds us of this in his poem: “Two

Tramps in Mud Time”. He says, “The sun was

warm but the wind was chill”; “You know how it

is with an April day”. Brendan McWilliams in his

book, “Weather Eye – The Final Year” warms us

not to cast clothes off too soon. “Till April is

dead, Change not a thread”. Another way that

April flatters to deceive is when some warm,

sunny days are quickly replaced by much colder

unsettled weather. A good example is April 1981

when a sunny, mild and mostly dry period ended

on the 24th

with the arrival of snow and a

temperature of only 5 degrees (about 8 degrees

below normal). This ties in with the period called

“Scairbhín na gCuac” (“The Cuckoo’s Wind”). It

refers to cold weather that can occur at the end of

April or beginning of May.

Despite not always living up to peoples

expectations April’s afternoon temperature of 13

degrees if combined with good sunshine and light

winds is really suitable for outdoor activities.

Gardening, building work and hiking are popular

and sports can take place easily. A study in Japan

from Osaka University seems to back this up.

They found respondents were happiest at an

outdoor temperature of 14 degrees (late April

temperature in Dublin). In Japan walking, jogging

and hiking are popular and many Japanese people

do routine morning exercises outdoors.

Whatever happens this month, April 2018, let’s

hope that “March winds and April showers, bring

forth May flowers”.

Denis Torsney.

means ‘practice makes perfect’ and it is very apt

in the context of student learning, where students

continuous practice can really enhance their

personal learning. The origins of the proverb can

be traced back to the 16th century, when its form

was ‘use makes perfect’.

US, LCC Amnesty group invited any interested

students and teachers to join us in sending a

message of support from our school community

here in Ireland to students and teachers in the

US, as they took part in a global day of action at

weekend, culminating in a march on Washington.

This was a huge success as our school community

gathered together in solidarity against gun

violence. Thank you to Ms. McCarthy for

spearheading this event.

Lucan CC students put finishing touches to

upcoming stage production: There is now only

3 weeks to go until our students take to the stage

for their much anticipated performance of Fiddler

of the Roof. Ticket pricing has been released as

they remain as competitive as ever! Adult

admission will be €12 and child admission will be

only €7. Students are busy learning their lines and

we are delighted to announce that we have a full

band accompanying the performance each night.

Please get your tickets early for this not to be

missed Lucan event.

The next open, general

meeting of Men's Shed

Lucan will be on Tuesday,

17th April; 6.30 to 7.45pm

in Lucan Library (the

Library is located in the

SuperValu shopping centre

on the Newcastle Road, close to Starbucks).

As usual, this general meeting offers everybody a

chance to have their say and voice their opinions

and/or suggestions. If you have an idea or

suggestion come and share it with us, all of us.

We will also be reviewing progress on the new

options identified at our March meeting. Looking

forward to a positive and productive meeting.

Coláiste Phádraig CBS Football: Hard luck to our senior footballers who

were narrowly beaten 2-7 to 1-11 in their All

Ireland “B” semi-final by St. Nathy’s

Ballaghaddereen. Matthew Dunne scored an

impressive 1-3 for the team while Luke Walsh

added 1-2 and Lucan looked all set for victory as

they led by a point with just a minute left on the

clock. However, their spirited opponents grabbed

the winning goal right at the end of the game to

break Lucan hearts. The players were

understandably devastated at the final whistle as

their dream was to finish their school playing

days at Croke Park but it was not to be. They can

all at least take tremendous pride in winning

Dublin and Leinster titles en route to the National

semi-final.

School tour: Our 2nd

yrs students have returned

safe and well after a very successful school tour

to Cologne over the Easter mid-term break. 48

students, accompanied by 5 teachers, spent 4 days

touring this 2,000 yr old city that spans the Rhine

River in western Germany and an educational and

fun time was had by all. The group’s first activity

was a guided tour Koln which included a tour of

the magnificent Cologne cathedral, a world

famous masterpiece of Gothic architecture that

was declared a World Heritage Site in 1996. Next

up was a visit to the German Sports Museum

where the students got to play a rooftop 5-a-side

game! The following day involved a visit to

nearby Koblenz where the group enjoyed a cruise

down the river Rhine before taking a stunning

cable car ride over the town. Perhaps the highlight

of the tour for many was the trip to Phantasialand

Theme Park, one of Germany’s biggest tourist

attractions, the next day. From gentle boat rides to

white-knuckle rollercoasters, there was something

for everyone at this magical place of thrills, spills

and entertainment. The final day included a tour

of the Lindt chocolate factory followed by a tour

of Bayern Leverkusen’s football stadium. The

group flew home with many experiences and

memories that will last for years to come. The

teachers, Mr. Casey (tour organiser), Mr. Todd,

Mr. Kilkenny, Mr. Douglas and Ms. Lynch would

like to commend the students on their impeccable

behaviour throughout the tour.

TY Ball: The third annual Transition Year Ball in

aid of Pieta House took place on Friday 23th

March in Westmanstown and it was a resounding

success. The students enjoyed dressing up in their

sharp and stylish formal wear even more than

their female partners! The students enjoyed a

lovely 2 course meal followed by a wonderful

night of singing, dancing (and countless selfies!)

The event raised close to 300e for a very good

cause. The students are to be commended on their

impeccable behaviour throughout the Ball which

impressed the staff immensely. The entire event

was planned and organised by the students

themselves so well done to them on their

initiative, team work and professionalism.

Transition Year: The TY students are taking part

in a sponsored Cycle-Against-Suicide event next

week. Along with a number of teachers, they will

be cycling a total of 50km around the surrounding

areas of West Dublin and Kildare. The group

were fundraising already this week in AIB Lucan

and plan to organise some more stationary-cycle

events in Lucan over the coming days and weeks.

All support is appreciated although the main

focus is on raising awareness of mental health

issues surrounding suicide.

Soccer: Our 15 team qualified for the Leinster

Champions League semi-finals on Tuesday after

defeating Leinster Minor Cup Finalists Patrician

College 5-4 on pens after a 1-1 draw. Franklin

Achugbu put Lucan in from mid-way through the

1st half with a stinging drive from the edge of the

box before Patrician equalised just minutes later.

Josh Doyle scored the winning penalty to secure a

hard fought win for the team.

Subject Options: An information night for

parents of current 3rd

yr and TY students was held

in the school on Tuesday. Numerous

presentations were made by the various subject

departments designed to help parents guide their

son in making the right subject choices in 5th

yr.

The newly launched Leaving Cert subject

Computer Science is one of 14 subject options

available to our students. A colourful and

informative booklet was presented to all in

attendance on the night which will allow students

to make informed choices in the new school year.

Thanks to all the teachers from the various

subjects who gave up their time to attend and

make presentations.

force in 2017, yet, due to retirements and

movements within the force, Garda numbers

continue to decline. In 2014 there were 74 Gardaí

levels of the cycle track and footpath are different

to make sure that cyclists and pedestrians are

separated. This section of cycle track / footpath is

a segregated facility as there is enough width for

both the cycle track and footpath. A safety audit

was recently carried out for this scheme and no

issues were identified regarding this element of

Extract from CCC1 Football Reports

The U-10 groups were away Ballinteer St. Johns

and at home to St. Sylvester’s.

An elusive dry morning set the scene for the away

clash between the ‘Team Black’ Lucan boys and

St. Johns Ballinteer yesterday. This U10 squad

are not only impressive in the large number of

players they boast, but are also big on the hard

work and enthusiasm they have shown during

training sessions this year so far.

We had a spotlight on one of the teams for this

report. Players: Ben Glennon, Brian Finn, Cathal

Ryan, Cormac O'Duibhir, Jack Meenan, Odhran

Gallagher, Oisin Quearney. Mentor: Eithne Ryan

The football skills they have been practicing were

very much in evidence yesterday much to the

delight of the spectators and mentors. The lads

showed great teamwork with excellent short

passing throughout the match. This was a fast

moving game with well-matched teams achieving

a high number of scores which made it a thrilling

spectacle to watch. There was also some fantastic

defensive skill in evidence with great blocks and

tireless tackling. Well done Lucan. Keep up the

good work.

The U-12 teams were back in league grading

action. The U-12A team had a great win against

Raheny on a scoreline of 7-8 to 1-1. The first 15

minutes were close but then the Lucan team

showed some great movement and passing to

score a couple of very impressive goals. The team

pulled away in the second half to score some

further team goals and finished the game strongly.

The U-12B team fell to a string Kilmacud Crokes

team on a scoreline of 3-10 to 3-01 but fought

well to the end. The U-12C fell in their grading

game by just one point but played really well on

the day.

Well done to all teams competing at the weekend.

Submissions on Clonburris: Don’t forget April

20th

is the deadline for submissions for the

Clonburris development.

Lucan Road: Since we had the bad snow in

March many very bad pot holes have emerged on

the Lucan Road. I have made representation to

have these repair them.

Traffic Signals: Following representation to the

council to repair the traffic signals that were

knocked down outside Earlsfort, the council are

now repairing them.

Kissogue Roundabout: The roundabout on the

ring road between Kissogue and Adamstown is

extremely busy at peak times, with drivers not

yielding to traffic entering the roundabout. I will

be applying for yellow boxes for this reason.

Transport Users The promoters of Metro Link, the underground

rail system from Swords to Sandyford via the

Airport are going around to

venues in the areas that this

line will serve, telling them

how good this plan is.

Everyone already knows

the line out to Sandyford is

great for the people that use it. I travelled on this

line several times and I found this line provides a

great reliable and frequent service second to none.

There is no need to give them a better service

when they already have a great system.

The NTA should be coming out to areas

like Lucan and explain why Lucan is been further

delayed while Sandyford is getting a much-

improved system. Lucan is providing much of the

new housing that is needed and should have a

higher priority than areas that already has

great Luas system.
