N. Zingarelli: Romeo and Juliet

OPERA

Co-production: Armonia Atenea-The Friends of Music Orchestra Salzburg Whitsun Festival A few days before its first appearance at the renowned Salzburg Whitsun Festival (Salzburger Pfingstfestspiele), the Armonia Atenea is presenting the first global revival of N. Zingarelli's composition “Giulietta e Romeo”. Considered to be the composer's best work, the opera was first staged at La Scala in Milan in 1796. The work is being revived under the dynamic guidance of conductor George Petrou, featuring a select international cast. Young Composer’s Workshop

CONTEMPORARY MUSICAL CREATION Since 1997, Megaron-The Athens Concert Hall and Theodore Antoniou have been hosting workshops for young composers, helping to promote better understanding and collaboration between conductor, composer and musicians. Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France Violin, conductor: Leonidas Kavakos One of the leading orchestras of Europe, founded in 1937, the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra (Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France) was re-established in the mid-1970s at the instigation of Pierre Boulez, who did away with the rigidity of the traditional symphony orchestra, instead employing a Philharmonique that adapts simultaneously to any configurations of classical, modern and contemporary repertoire. Leonidas Kavakos has been announced as the winner of the Léonie Sonning Music Prize 2017. This prestigious prize is awarded annually to an internationally recognised composer, instrumentalist, conductor or singer. Since 1959, the distinguished list of previous prize-winners includes Sir Simon Rattle, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Pierre Boulez, Mstislav Rostropovich, Miles Davis, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Benjamin Britten and Leonard Bernstein. Leonidas Kavakos is the fifth violinist to be awarded the Léonie Sonning Music Prize. Before him, the Music Prize has been awarded to Yehudi Menuhin (1972), Isaac Stern (1982), Gidon Kremer (1989) and Anne-Sophie Mutter (2001). “Leonidas Kavakos is one of the most expressive violinists you can hear today. He interprets the masterpieces for violin from Bach and Mozart to the classics of the 20th century with authority and with profound musical understanding. MEGARON PLUS In collaboration with the Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities Speaker: Costas Douzinas, member of the Hellenic Parliament; Director of the Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities Costas Douzinas is Director of the Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities and Professor of Law at Birkbeck. He joined the Law School in 1992 and was Head of Department from 1996 to 2002. Professor Douzinas is a visiting Professor at the University of Athens and has held visiting posts at the Universities of Paris, Thessaloniki and Prague. In 1997 he was awarded a Jean Monnet fellowship by the European University Institute, Florence. In 1998 he was a visiting fellow at Princeton University and at the Cardozo School of Law. In 2002, he was a Fellow at Griffith University, Brisbane and at the Universities of Beijing and Nanjing. Professor Douzinas is also the Pro-Vice Master at Birkbeck for International Links.
