Located among the dense urban fabric o f NYC, th is des ign a ims to prov ide retreat to residents through the facilitation of passive ventilation, natural daylighting, and visual access to the NYC skyl ine.

The design features two vertical breaks, which separate the 9-story building into three masses, allowing ventilation anddiffused light to pass into the units on either side. On the lower levels, shading panels prevent excessive solar heat gain from penetrating the curtain wall facades, while generating a visual texture that is cohesive with the neighboring buildings.

The crystalline form cantilevers out overthe existing plaza, reaching up toward the iconic First Christian Church steeple. This gesture results in the creation of aninformal passageway along the infamousarchitectural corridor of Columbus, IN.

Below the cantilever, exists a seriesof gallery spaces defined by an angled, bamboo screen. Using layering and transparency, the design of the screenregulates interior lighting quality, whilesimultaneously controlling visual accessto a range of public and private spaces.

THE DOWNTOWN PROJECT

Revitalization efforts in Downtown Las Vegas havesparked a larger social movement aspiring to incitecommunity growth, build entrepreneurial energy, andempower upward mobility. To achieve these goalsand to help meet the needs of the growingpopulation, the Downtown Project organization islooking to establish a community commons in theheart of the Downtown that will act as a sustainablecatalyst for collisions, co-learning, & connectedness.

Home to the vacant Western Hotel & Casino, theproposed site faces onto Fremont Street, the centralspine of Downtown Las Vegas. Moreover, the site’scentral location within the Downtown Project’sredevelopment footprint offers an ideal location for community gathering and serendipitous interactions.

Working directly with key representatives from the Downtown Project, our team strived to develop atargeted approach that would respond to the needsof the client and community, while addressing a variety of physical, social and economical influences.

TARGETED APPROACH

Inspired by the Downtown Project’s motto, “First, Unique, and Best”, The Launchpad is centered on creating spaces that promote discovery, including a cutting-edge residency program focused on the rapid development of innovative gaming and digitaltechnology. This program provides entrepreneurs witha co-working space where they can develop and showcase ideas, while allowing them to live on-site.

The niche market of The LaunchPad will bring a new vibrant energy to Downtown Las Vegas, drawing business back from the new strip, and continuing the evolution of how gambling is experienced in Las Vegas.

While all other resorts will be playing last yearsgames, this new multi-use entertainment complexappropriately named The LaunchPad will be knownas the exclusive location in Las Vegas for the development and implementation of the mostinnovative gaming atmosphere in the world.

S ITE STRATEGY

The LaunchPad features a true North/South slice through the site that contrasts the orientation of the downtown’s 28 degree city grid. As the DowntownProject continues its revitalization efforts to the East and South, the LaunchPad will connect historical Freemont Street, with the new downtown district.

A central courtyard becomes the grand exterior lobby for all of the programming on the site. Each program acts as a magnet to keep the courtyard activated at all times of the day. The shading device and structures outlining the southern and western sides will shade the courtyard during the hottest times of the day, providing outdoor thermal comfort, a rarity in Las Vegas.
