Who said “You don’t get something for nothing?” Let LetsGoKids show you how to spend a day or even a week in and around Melbourne “on the cheap”, where you can see and do lots …. And spend nothing! (or just a little). So what are you waiting for?

There’s no excuses now, get out there and DO IT!

1. Ride the Free City Circle tram or the Tourist Shuttle bus and listen to the commentary on all the places of interest. Get your bearings and do a bit of people watching. You may discover a new spot to check out.

2. Take a train or ferry ride to the seaside town of Williamstown and explore our Maritime and Naval History.

3. Head to Southbank and watch the flames go off outside Crown Casino or play in the dancing water fountains on a hot day.

4. Browse the new shopping area at Harbourtown. WARNING! (you may be tempted to spend some money here!)

5. Visit the Ian Potter Centre in Fed Square. Lots of Aussie art. See what Melbourne city and the countryside once looked like through the eyes of the Indigenous and European people.

6. Kids are FREE at Scienceworks. Check out the interactive exhibitions.

7. Stroll through the Botanical Gardens (check out The Children’s Garden) and around the ornamental lakes. The Sidney Myer Music Bowl is only a short walk away.

8. Kids are FREE at the Melbourne Museum.9. Head to the Immigration Museum and see

how your family arrived (probably) in Australia.

Located just 40mins north of Melbourne and with easy access via Western Ring Road, the City of Whittlesea is growing up fast!

New communities such as Laurimar and Mernda Villages are springing up everywhere brining state of the art facilities like schools, parks and libraries to once small communities like Doreen and Mernda .

The area is also home to a wide variety of natural bushland, gorges, hills, native animals, amazing scenery and Melbourne’s friendliest people.

There are heaps of family activities (p.14) and Funfields Adventure Park (see voucher below) at Whittlesea is the jewel in the crown.

The park has a wide variety of rides and activities and the water play areas and slides are a hit on those hot summer days.

Small farm based café’s utilising their own homemade/homegrown produce are popping up on old homesteads and give the area a feel not found in the other parts of suburban Melbourne.

Come for the Country Music Festival in February or The Whittlesea Show in November, but make sure you do make it out to the fabulous north!

The Mornington Peninsula is located just over an hour’s drive away from the city, on Melbourne’s ‘doorstep’, and is often described as Melbourne’s playground.

The new Eastern Ring Road and Mornington Peninsula Freeway now give easier and quicker access to the area from all over Melbourne. You can get there in about an hour and a bit and kids won’t even have time to ask “Are we there yet?”

Most of the popular beaches such as Dromana, Safety Beach and Rosebud are calm and sheltered by the offshore sandbars, making them perfect for the littlies.

There are literally kilometres of waters for the family to frolic in, as well great foreshores for building those sand castles or a traditional game of beach cricket.

French Island, accessibly only by boat, is mainly covered by a national park which is home to Australia’s largest koala community. The coastline consists of salt marshes and mangrove mudflats.

Did You Know

The highest peak on the peninsula is Arthurs Seat. It rises to over 300 metres and provides panoramic views from various lookouts.

Worth a Look!

When the weather gets a bit too hot even for the beach, you can head to “them thar hills” in the middle of the peninsula to places like Red Hill, Main Ridge and Arthurs Seat for a bit cooler weather, some great views and loads of activities.

Go lose yourself at Ashcombe (see right) or Boneo Mazes (see opposite), go horse riding, tree surfing, strawberry picking at Sunny Ridge (see opposite). Try the icecream – or have a relaxing soak in the nearby Hot Springs.

No trip to the peninsula would be complete without a game of minigolf in Rosebud/Rye or a visit to the Wittingslow Summertime Carnival, where generations of Melburnians have played the clown’s mouth or ridden the dodgem cars.

Set on a vast landscape with over 10 themed gardens, Ashcombe Maze is home to Australia’s oldest and largest traditional hedge maze. - Fully licensed café and garden terrace - Gift shop featuring a range of lavender inspired beauty products and gourmet foods.

One of Australia’s premier wildlife experiences, the Penguin Parade draws thousands of visitors to the Island each year. Taking place at dusk each day, hundreds of little penguins emerge from the sea after a day spent fishing and waddle up to their burrows in the sand dunes.

For a magic encounter with the 20,000 Australian Fur Seals at Seal Rocks, jump on a Wildlife Coast Cruise (p.25) from Cowes for an up-close wildlife encounter with these fascinating creatures.

Panny’s Phillip Island Chocolate Factory (p.24) is a must-do for chocolate lovers and is a fascinating, interactive and educational celebration of all things chocolate. With an exhibition and ever-changing varieties of chocolates to choose from, Phillip Island Chocolate Factory is without a doubt the sweetest adventure on the island.

Friendly fishing instructors at Rhyll Trout & Bush Tucker Farm (p.26) teach visitors to catch rainbow trout in a picturesque tree-lined lake and the all-weather indoor Rainforest Pool. Take your catch with you or ask the chef to transform your trout into a magnificent fish & chip lunch!

The best and most enjoyable way to get around the Island is to walk or ride a bike. The island boasts many designated tracks and hiking routes suited to all fitness levels, with each revealing a different island treasure - whether spectacular coast, flora and fauna.

MAGICAL MEDIEVAL

ADVENTURESLIKE NEVER BEFORE

Ballarat is Victoria’s third largest city, located just over an hour by modern freeway from Melbourne.

When most people think of Ballarat, they think of Sovereign Hill (voucher p.31).

Sure, this incredible open air museum that allows you to experience what life was like in a gold mining town in the 1850’s is a world class attraction, but the city has much, much more to offer.

The Museum of Australian Democracy (M.A.D.E) opened on 4 May 2013 on the site of the Eureka Rebellion Ballarat. It is a state-of–the-art museum that has been curated by some of the best Australian and international historians, museum experts and innovation minds. It tells the Eureka story in the context of the 21st century.

Out & About

You don’t have to travel far to feel like you’re on holidays and there’s no better place to bring the family for a short getaway or extended break than Geelong and The Bellarine.

There’s always a reason to visit Geelong. There’s a year-round calendar of events ranging from sport and festivals to culture and arts. Kids will particularly love the attractions at Festival of Sails in January – lots of colourful land-based activities and attractions and fireworks alongside the exciting program of sailing.

At Christmas, Geelong comes alive as the Christmas capital of Australia with a giant floating Christmas tree, light shows on historic buildings and a whole range of other activities to get you into the Christmas spirit.

On the March long weekend the three-day Motor City Music Festival takes over the Geelong Showgrounds. Friday and Saturday are just for Mums and Dads but Sunday the whole family can enjoy – kids are free and so are the on-site carnival rides and fireworks.

The Waterfront precinct is a favourite with visitors and locals alike. Stroll the attractions, explore the many playgrounds and hit the most spectacularly located skate park right on the edge of the water, where hard-core skaters happily share with kids on scooters. Plus, there are plenty of places for parents to grab a coffee along the way.

A block from the waterfront is a great lot of shopping options. Market Square Shopping Centre (p.39) has loads of national brand stores and a great schedule of activities and events for kids, particularly during the holidays. Nearby, the National Wool Museum has a calendar of events with plenty of activities and exhibitions specifically for kids.

See how we’ve reinvented our old industrial spaces into funky new galleries, cafes and breweries – Little Creatures is super friendly for families with kids activities and sandpits alongside tables for a casual drink and bite to eat. It’s so kid-friendly its become popular with groups of Mums and bubs for coffee and food.

To take your trip down another gear head out to The Bellarine. From bay beaches in the north that are best for boating and fishing to surf, sand and some of Australia’s best golf courses on the southern end.

Right in the middle of The Bellarine, Wallington is a choice spot for families with some major attractions from water and theme parks at Adventure Park to mini golf, horse riding and a giant maze.

Queenscliff has been a travel destination of choice for more than a century, and in it kids will learn by stealth – they’re having so much fun they don’t realize it’s educational! The Marine and Freshwater Discovery Centre on the way into town has touch tanks and provides insight into the aquatic life unique to the area.

The town is steeped in history and a stroll in the main street will show off spectacular old hotels with towers and intricate workmanship. Get a hands-on history lesson with the Bellarine Railway, operating out of Queenscliff station. Vintage steam trains operate all year, and several times a year they become Thomas the Tank Engine or a Santa train. Fun for trainspotters big and small.

Close by at the Queenscliff Harbour there are several tours operating on-water activities like South Bay Eco Adventures to take in the wildlife and history of Southern Port Phillip Bay, or Sea-All Dolphin Swims who’ll fit you with a wetsuit and take you out into the bay to snorkel with seals and dolphins.

For kids to get close to nature on land, there are loads of great places to take children on the Bellarine Taste Trail – farm gates, provedores and pick-your-own produce sites are fabulous for some dirt-under-you-fingernails fresh and delicious food.

The Great Ocean Road is said by many to be one of the best coastal roads in the world. Well – It’s true!!

The road runs for 250 km from Torquay, to Warrnambool, taking approximately 5 hours of non-stop driving. But, who wouldn’t want to stop?

On the route there are many places to stop and enjoy the views of the ocean and what the coastal towns have to offer.

In Torquay The Surf World Museum celebrates the story of surfing, it also charts Australia’s significant contribution to the development of surfing around the world. It houses surfing artefacts and memorabilia and commemorates Australia’s fantastic surfing heritage and rich beach culture.

In Lorne you can go jump on some trampolines or grab a snack or meal at one of the many eateries.

Nearby, the Otway Fly Treetop Adventures offer a whole host of experiences with the two core activities being the Treetop Walk and the Zip Line Eco Tour.

If you are on the Great Ocean Road and are around Apollo Bay or Port Campbell near dark, pop into Melba Gully at Laver’s Hill and check out the glow worm caves. You will see thousands of the tiny little insects glowing in their farn covered grottos as night falls. There is an excellent boardwalk that leads you past waterfalls and up to a 200 year old tree. Take a torch, but don’t shine it on the glow worms, as this can be harmful to them. It’s free too!

Handy Hint

Near Port Campbell are the world famous 12 Apostles. These unique rock formations that were carved by years of erosion used to be part of the mainland. There’s not 12 anymore – Some have succumbed to the elements. How many are left?

Not telling – You’ll have to find out for yourself!

Warrnambool is the end of the road and it is jam packed with things for families to do. Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village is a living historical village that displays the life of a 19th century port and town, and holder of Victoria’s largest maritime shipwreck collection, it occupies a beautiful site, tumbling down the bluff towards Lady Bay.

You can explore the village area that has over 40 buildings and vessels spread over 10 hectares. Explore at your own pace or take the fun (and educational) Sea Chest Challenge Trail, and all kids receive a bag of nibbles for the farm animals that they will discover as they explore.

Tower Hill is an enormous volcanic crater rimmed by beds of volcanic ash. The inside of the crater, and the island-hills are now a wildlife reserve and there are substantial populations of native birds and wildlife. It’s easy to see koalas, kangaroos, emus and much more. Take a tour with Shannon or Chris (p.42) and learn about the area’s significance.

Lake Pertobe Adventure Playground is a year-round family attraction. It’s a 20 hectare adventure playground and a paradise for kids. There are giant slides, flying foxes, a maze and boat rides. Out & About

Located on the banks of the mighty Murray River, the twin towns of Echuca Moama are the closest point of the Murray to Melbourne – just a 2.5 hour drive. The historic Port Precinct is recognised as one of Australia’s finest heritage icons and is home to the largest riverboat fleet in the world.

The port area has undergone some significant renovation and restoration in the last few years and now boasts an interpretative centre as well as the old favourites like paddle steamer trips, horse and carriage rides, the olde world penny arcade at Sharps, ice cream parlours, workshops demonstrating the trades of the day, as well as plenty of cafes and beautifully restored pubs from the golden age of the riverboat trade.

You can step back in time and experience the magic of the paddlesteamers era by taking a cruise on one of the fully restored boats.

Murray River Paddlesteamers (p.46) love kids and will make sure the family truly feels like they have stepped back in time to the paddlesteamers era when you take a cruise on one of their steam driven vessels.

Built in 1865 by the Victorian Railways, the Echuca Wharf was crucial to the town’s development and at its peak in 1890, it turned over 240 paddlesteamers.

BENDIGO EASTER FESTIVAL 3–6 APRIL 2015

Welcome! It’s Easter in Bendigo.

Located an easy hour and a half drive from Melbourne, there’s fun to be had in Bendigo for the kids with a great range of attractions and experiences to keep them occupied and engaged. They may even learn something about the role Bendigo played in the history of our great nation!!!

More gold was found in Bendigo between 1850 – 1900 than anywhere in the world. Around 9 billion dollars worth of gold was found in Bendigo, making it the second highest producing gold field in Australia after Kalgoorlie, and the seventh richest field in the world.

There was very little surface gold, it was contained in rich quartz reefs stretching all over the city. Therefore a great deal of underground mining had to take place.

Today there are still tunnels deep underground that criss-cross the whole area.

You can spend some time exploring the life of a gold miner at the Central Deborah Gold Mine. You can even take a tour deep underground!

Bendigo is also famous for its vintage Talking Tram Tour that weaves through the wide streets of Bendigo telling its passengers the tales of days gone by.

Bendigo has a long Chinese history which can be traced back to the gold rush, and today you can explore an original 1860’s Joss House and Chinese culture artefacts at the Golden Dragon Museum.

You can inspire your scientific curiosity at the Discovery Science & Technology Centre. With fantastic exhibits to explore, the southern hemisphere’s tallest vertical slide, a cosy planetarium and Kaleidoscope, a specially designed space for aspiring scientists under eight.

The Zone Entertainment Complex is a great family day out with rollerskating, mini golf, laser tag, gokarting and arcade games. Bendigo is great to visit no matter what the weather!

This is one of the most difficult ball skills to master and one of the most

useful attacking moves in football. Kosta Barbarouses is an expert when it

comes to dribbling. Kosta uses this action to get past the defender and create opportunities

to score. Try this drill to improve your dribbling ability.

- Set up a series of cones in a zigzag pattern.

- Now try and get through the cones as quickly as possible by moving in and out of the cones.

- Keep the ball close to your feet at all times.

- Use all the parts of your feet to keep the ball moving in the right direction, including the inside of your foot, outside of your foot and sole.

- Have a competition with your friends and see who is the fastest.

- Always keep control

of the ball.

- If it gets away from

you, put a foot on it!

- Lift your eyes up so

you know what’s

ahead of you.

- Practice, Practice,

Practice!

Public Transportmyki – Victoria’s new ticketing system for travel on all public transport. It is a durable plastic card-similar in size to a credit card-which is used to pay for travel. Your myki can hold both myki money (a dollar amount) and a myki pass (travel days). You can get both types of travel card from the Fed Square Visitor Centre, the MetShop at Melbourne Town Hall (cnr Swanston & Collins Sts), 7Eleven, Coles Express & wherever “Metcard” or Myki signs are displayed.
