At the Strand: This weekend at the Strand Theatre is The Duff. Bianca is a content high school student whose world is shat-tered when she learns the student body knows her as “The Duff” (designated ugly fat friend) to her prettier, more popular friends. Now, despite the words of caution from her favourite teacher, she puts aside the potential distrac-tion of her crush Toby, and enlists Wesley, a slick but charming jock, to help reinvent herself. To save her senior year from turning into a total disaster, Bianca must find the confidence to overthrow the school’s ruthless label maker Madison and remind everyone that no matter what people look or act like, we are all someone’s duff. The Duff stars Mae Whitman, Robbie Amell and Bella Thorne.Canadian Hot 100:1. Uptown Funk! by Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars2. Sugar by Maroon 53. Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran
4. FourFiveSeconds by Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney5. Love Me Like You Do by Ellie GouldingA Catchy Single:The single that I recommend this week is Heartbeat Song by American singer Kelly Clarkson from her seventh studio album Piece by Piece. The song was written by Mitch Allan, Audra Mae, Kara DioGuardi and Jason Evigan and produced by Greg Kurstin. It was released on January 15, 2015 as the albums lead single. On the charts, Heartbeat song reached No. 8 in Aus-tria, No. 7 in Belgium, No. 6 in Canada, No. 3 in Netherlands, No. 3 in Scotland, No. 6 in South Af-rica, No. 21 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and No. 7 on US Adult Comtemporary. At the Library:1. Ghost Boy by Martin Pistorius: In January 1988 Martin Pistorius, aged 12, fell inexplicably sick. First he lost his voice and stopped eating. Then he slept constantly and shunned human contact. Doc-tors were mystified. Within 18 months he was mute and wheelchair-bound. Martin’s parents were told an unknown degenerative disease left him with the mind of a baby and less than two years to live. Martin was moved to care centres for severely disabled children. The stress and heartache shook his parents’ marriage and their family to the core. Their boy was gone. Or so they thought.2. Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard: The poverty stricken Reds are commoners, living under the rule of the Silvers, elite warriors with god-like powers. To Mare Barrow, a 17-year-old Red girl from The Stilts, it looks like nothing will ever change. Mare
finds herself working in the Silver Palace, at the center of those she hates the most. She quickly discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a dead-ly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy Silver control. But power is a dan-gerous game. And in this world divided by blood, who will win?3. Mistakes Can Kill You: A collection of western stories by Louis L’Amour: This book highlights an essential selec-tion featuring nine of L’Amour’s earlier short sto-ries, sometimes written under the pen name Jim Mayo, that exemplify the rugged morality of the best Western writing. In “Black Rock Coffin-Makers,” two men ready to kill over ownership of a ranch get more than they bargain for when a stranger is caught in the crossfire. And in “Four- Card Draw,” Allen Ring wins a ranch in a poker game, only to find out an unsolved murder was committed there years ago and law enforcement thinks Ring knows more about it than he’s letting on. L’Amour made his characters come alive on the page, and his ability to capture the spirit and authen-ticity of the Wild West is unrivaled. Mistakes Can Kill You transports you to a world you’ll never want to leave, and proves that Louis L’Amour will always be the king of spinning a classic Western yarn.

Sure signs that spring will be here soon - the Great Horned Owl is nesting and the ice is melting on the Souris River seen here b e t w e e n Hartney and Souris. PHOTOS / BARB ALSTON
by Barb Alston, Melita Presbyterian Church As I write this, a glorious day has dawned. The sights
and sounds of a new morning are astounding. Flocks of geese are heard in the distance. The chickadees are whis - tling steadily off in the bush. The woodpeckers regularly visit the chunk of suet on the deck in a steady stream. Dark -eyed juncos flit to and fro behind the house, peck - ing at the grass, that here and there is greening up. Blue Jays call from afar. A red-tailed hawk wheels around in the air in the distance. A meadowlark flies from the top of a post down into some tall fall last-seasons grass. Those first robins have been sighted, usually still in flocks, jumping happily around yards in town. There is some snow, here and there, where there were any high drifts, or on the north side of buildings, anywhere it is shaded.
Ice fishing is over for another year, the ice melting away from the shore and taking on a sugary water-logged quality. Geese hang around watery areas, sometimes walking on top of the ice that is left. We have hoped for this for a long time. Conversations have turned from say - ing, “It wasn’t a bad winter” when the weather warms to “when will it end?” after the last brief snowstorm. Children and dogs have found the mud puddles.
Some are midway or more through calving their cattle herds. Others are just getting underway. Our fall calves have grown to a good size by now and love to run and play on the ridges in the evening.

Genealogy becoming popular hobby by Brittany Walker
Genealogy research - the study of family ancestries and histories - has become an increasingly popular hobby for many people all over the world. In fact, according to ABC News, genealogy is the second most popular hobby in the US, after gardening, and the second most visited category of websites. It is a billion dollar industry that has inspired websites, books and even television shows.
Popular television shows like “Finding Your Roots” and “Who Do You Think You Are?” have been on for many seasons now, and they do not seem to be going anywhere soon.
“Who Do You Think You Are?” on TLC focuses on celebrities, who are set up with professional gene - alogists and get travel the world tracking down their family roots. This television show is sponsored by Ancestry.com, one of the top genealogy websites of 2015. These websites have been popping up ever since the boom in the interest of genealogy. With these sites, you can input all of your family data and it will give your hints about your fam - ily history. For example, I tried Ancestry.ca, and was able to find a copy of the original UK outward pas - senger list from 1890-1960. On this list was my great- grandpa’s name along with the rest of his family when they came to Canada, and
arrived in Halifax. Of the thousands of
genealogy sites on the web, the top 10 include:
1. Ancestry 2. My Heritage 3. Mocavo 4. Archives 5. Find My Past 6. World Vital Records 7. One Great Family 8. My Trees 9. Genealogy Bank 10. The Genealogical
Research Library Ancestry.com seems to
rise high above the pack when it comes to genealogy websites. Since 2013, the
company has provided access to approximately 12.7 billion records and 2.14 million paying sub - scribers.
No matter what website you choose to use, gene - alogy can help us change what we think we know about ourselves and help us discover the things that we never knew.
If you would like to try your hand at researching your family history, visit any of the sites listed above as they offer free trials with limited access to their data - base.

Continued from page 4 It is time to go in
search of a Great Horned Owl nest. I hear them hooting some evenings, far off in the bush. The deer are back to spending their nights in the bush, after an absence due to deep snow. Fresh tracks are seen on the soft sides of the gravel road. The trees, though not out in leaf, have a fullness to their buds. Greenhouses are busy places, hours of planting and transplanting take place. The tempera - ture is carefully moni - tored so the new seed - lings are neither too warm nor too cold. Preparations for seeding in the fields are underway.
All of these are signs of spring, hopeful signs, that growth will happen after a time of cold and dormancy. At the same time - we are right in the days just before Easter. Soon it will be the season of Easter. Easter Sunday will come and go, a mem - ory then for another year.
But perhaps it is good to pause, to think about Easter, about its message of new life. To me it has always been about the possibilities of God, a reminder that Gods ways are not our ways.
The past year has held sorrow as well as joy for most people; that is life. To me the resurrection happens whenever there
is healing where you never thought there could be, when you go on with - out someone you loved in your life, when you just thought you never could. What I like to think about at Easter is that that power that meant that Jesus was resurrected - is available to us in our lives, to transform both us and the lives we live. It is not just some far off thing that happens when we die. It is in the hear and now.
I think that that is worth celebrating. Whenever despair becomes hope, healing takes place, tears turn to a smiles, hate turns to love, enemies become friends, sadness becomes joy, we are experiencing “resurrection power” in the here and now !
Enjoy each sign of spring, signs as well of Gods power and presence in our lives from day to day. And, oh yes, Happy Easter!
To Everything There Is A Season - a time for experiencing resurrection power

Broomhill Women’s Institute submitted by Sylvia Halls, sec.
The April meeting of Broomhill Women’s Institute, was held at the home of Pat Dickson, on March 26 at 1:30 p.m.
The meeting opened with the Creed repeated in unison. Motto: A healthy attitude is contagious but don’t wait to catch it from others, be a carrier. Roll Call: Share an Easter memory. Some interesting memories were shared. Thought for the Day - Pat Dickson. “ About the only thing that comes to us without effort, is old
age ” and “When nobody around you seems to measure up, it’s time to check your yardstick.” The Education Convenor gave their two minute presentations of their committee. Correspondence included the fundraiser M.W.L. - cash calendar, applications for the Provincial
Conference in Winnipeg, in May, and the bursary update forms from Reston School. The secretary has sent out letters to the 4-H Clubs we sponsor, confirming our ongoing funding. The W.I. T-shirts have been ordered and confirmed. They will be at the Regional Convention in
Brandon, on April 20. The cemetery gate arch project was discussed and further info will hopefully be available by our
next meeting. Gwen Fotheringham’s name has been entered into the Regional Book of Remembrance. Discussion took place about a date to house clean the Community Centre and do some minor
repairs. It was decided we would leave this until June. The Regional Spring Board meeting, which was to have been held March 24, was postponed
until April 8. So, thus there was no report. Discussion took place about a donation of a basket of goodies for the Country Auction at the
Provincial Convention. We decided to do a “Bathroom Basket” . Each member volunteered to bring certain items to fill the basket.
Fundraising ideas were shared and Helen McConnell suggested an interesting project, that we will pursue at the May meeting.
Nelda Wilkinson - Personal Development Convenor - presented each of us with a plate of her famous scones, some fudge cake and a pot-holder - hot-plate pad - that is her personal development creating her scones and pot-holder - hot-plate pads. This was very much appreciated by us all. Thank you, Nelda.
Our next meeting is May 6, at 1:30 p.m. instead of 7:30 p.m., as tha t is Reston 4-H Achievement that night. Our meeting will be held in our Community Centre.

by Robert Cey April is the start of
earnings season. Each quarter companies report their net earnings and also give guidance on what to expect for growth and earnings in the near future. Money managers watch earnings season about as close as a Winnipeg hockey fan watches the Jets. Typically the last week of March and the first week of April are when the markets drop and then take off again. This repeats itself every year as long as companies report profits that are what was expected by market analy - sists.
We all know someone who is involved directly in the oil industry and may have a friend, family member or neighbour who has been negatively affected by the oil prices. With that being said, I wanted to share some basic information so we can have a little better understanding of the oil industry and why we are all affected by that indus - try one way or another.
How many gallons of oil are there in a barrel? Forty-two US gallons (35 imperial gallons), or 159 litres.
How many barrels of oil are produced and con - sumed a day? As of early 2015, the IEA www.iea.org/oilmarketre - port/ forecast average demand for the year of more than 93 million bar - rels of oil and liquid fuels per day worldwide - that works out to more than 34 billion barrels a year - with January 2015 produc - tion totalling just over 94 million barrels per day.
What is crude oil? Crude oil is a mineral oil consisting of a mixture of hydrocarbons of natural origin and associated impurities, such as sul - phur. It exists in liquid form under normal surface temperatures and pressure. Its physical characteristics (for example, density) are highly variable.
Where is the bulk of oil demand growth going to come from? In the next five years, almost half of global oil demand growth will come from China and this trend is set to continue to 2040, as oil demand from the transportation sector is growing strongly in countries such as China and India. In contrast, oil demand among OECD countries is expected to decline over the outlook period, driven mostly by government policies on fuel efficiency and the fact that rates of vehicle own - ership are already high.
Market Report Market News After a generally posi -
tive start, most stock mar - kets retreated this week on US economic concerns. Positive economic data included continuing muted US inflation, with mod - erate inflation likely to help maintain the Federal Reserve’s cautious stance on interest rates. New- home sales in February rose almost 8%, to their highest level in seven years. Existing home sales also increased.
Slowing economic growth, however, caused some concern for market participants. The final reading of US gross domestic product for the last quarter of 2014 indi - cated that growth slowed to 2.2% y-o-y. The com - merce department also reported that corporate profits (after tax) fell by 3% over the previous quarter, the largest quar - terly drop since the first quarter of 2011. Declines in durable goods orders and non-defense capital goods orders in February pointed to a possible downshift in the economy during the first quarter.
Canada’s S&P/TSX index was initially sup - ported by advancing base metals and gold prices, but later fell back on US eco - nomic data. However, it fared better than many global indexes. The energy sector benefitted from ris - ing oil prices which surged as Saudi Arabia launched airstrikes against rebel forces in Yemen, generat - ing concerns about crude supplies.
The Nasdaq Composite index was turbulent, fal - ling substantially after nar

Crossroads This week Local band has success
Promoting a little bit of country, a little bit of rock n; roll - Jump The Clutch - is no stranger to the music industry, despite being relatively new on the Manitoba scene. The high energy group composed of five boys from the prairies was formed about four years ago when Major Pratt graduate JR Charron teamed up with four other musicians including fel - low Park West School Division graduates Ben Waddell of Shoal Lake and Jacob Moreau of Russell. Rounding out the band are Spencer Myers of Glenboro and Quinton Watt of Reston. The band’s biggest jump came when they recorded the single “Day Worth Livin’ For”, written by Charron in hon - our of his late father, who played a major role in making what Charron stands for today. On release day, the song recorded at Blacklist Studios in Winnipeg, had reached an astounding 22nd spot on the iTunes country chart and 122 on the Google Play North America.
The Guide New GM for golf club
There’s a new manager at the Killarney Lakeside Golf Club and he brings with him 20 years of expe - rience in both the golf and hospitality industry. “Basically, they’re going to a general manager (here at Lakeside) and they needed somebody with expe - rience in all facets of the industry. That’s what I brought,” said the Club’s new GM, Chad Keens, who was born and raised in Moose Jaw, SK.
The Boissevain Recorder Billaney Plumbing open for business
Jason Billaney is hoping roots in the community and plenty of experience will bode well for his new busi - ness. Billaney Plumbing got started a couple of weeks ago. The proprietor got started with Dale Merritt of Boissevain Plumbing and Heating in 1997. After spending some time with Hammond Construction, Billaney said he was looking for a dif - ferent job and the two connected. Right now, he is just running out of his house. In the future, depend - ing on volume of work, he might look at a storefront. “I am home-based,” said Billaney. “I have lived here for 35 years and I know a lot of people in town. I hope that works to my advantage.”
