President’s Message:

NEWS FLASH! Newcomers’ Club to hold its Christmas

Luncheon on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at the Alta Cub.

That’s five years in a row. It occurs to me that the true

Newcomers’ among you might not know the history of this

Grande Olde Club. It was organized in 1883, mostly by the

mining magnates of the day. The existing building was constructed in 1898

and an East wing was added in 1910. The exterior and interior remain

essentially the same as they were when originally constructed. The Club

caught up with the rest of the world in 1987 when it repealed its ban on

women as members and did away with its “Ladies Entrance”. The Club

remains today as one of the most prestigious social clubs in the valley.

When you are there, take a look around.

Program wise, this year we go from the traditional to the unique. The

Glastonbury Duo, costumed in period dress and playing handcrafted in-

struments along with the classical guitar, will entertain us with Celtic, Tu-

dor England and Renaissance Europe and traditional music with a Christ-

mas flavor. The Glastonbury Duo appeared locally this year at the Utah

Renaissance Faire at Thanksgiving Point and for the Murray City Cultural

Arts Program at Murray City Park. See P. 2 for details.

Don’t forget our Holiday Donation Drive which will benefit the Wom-

en’s Shelter at the YWCA. You may bring your donations of women’s and

children’s clothing to the Christmas Luncheon. See the YWCA website

for their wishlist for particulars. Also, there is a need for clean blankets

(not necessarily new), twin or larger. We will collect your contributions

at street level so you don’t have to lug them upstairs. See P. 9 for details.

Finally, have you noticed the OASIS mastheads in recent months? They

are the work of our creative Newsletter Editor, Hank Merrill. September

was based upon the first letter of several college football teams’ logos.

Can you identify the teams? If so, let Hank know. October’s was various

Halloween icons and November featured a giant turkey as the “O”. Have-

n’t seen December’s yet, but am willing to bet it has a Christmas motif.

Happy Holidays to all! Join the fun at the Alta Club on

December 9 when Carol and David Sharp, otherwise

known as the Glastonbury Duo, perform for us at our

us all in the Christmas Spirit! Carol and David have pre-

pared a special Christmas program just for us!

And....they have a unicorn!

The holidays are really HERE!! We've got a return visit to the Alta

Club for our fifth holiday luncheon. The Club will be decorated,

welcome us back, and extend their greetings to all for the best holi-

days ever. Don't forget to bring your donations for the holidays,

and leave downstairs on your way upstairs for a festive and fantastic

luncheon. We'll pack your donations, and deliver 'on the way home'

from our event. After all, the elves already have more than enough

to do on Christmas Eve! No time to shop and wrap?? Then you

may wish to write a check. Thank you all for extending your caring

spirit and generosity to others!

“Chemo caps for Sam” wrapped up October 31 with the delivery of 80 plus caps/

hats to the Huntsman Cancer Center’s Infusion Unit. What a variety of colors and

styles were knitted and crochet by our Ladies of the Needle.

In November we knitted our last Purple Hat for Shaken Baby Syndrome campaign.

The goal is for all babies born in November to go home with a purple hat as an

education tool for family members. We knitted over 50 purple baby hats which

were donated to the Newborn Unit at Riverton Hospital’s Maternity Unit.

Thank you to all of the knitters and crocheters who donated their skills and yarn

for these Newcomers’ service projects.

There is always a need for knitted/crocheted hats, scarves, whatever. Gail Senteney, 801-256-0530, has offered to

collect knitted and crocheted donations throughout the year for future needs. Let’s keep that needle busy!
