The Cooley's Anemia Foundation

is dedicated to serving children and young adults afflicted with

the genetic blood disease Thalassemia. For further

information on the Cooley's Anemia Foundation (CAF), visit

www.thalassemia.org

What is Thalassemia?

Thalassemia is a blood disorder passed

down through families (inherited) in

which the body makes an abnormal form

of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood

cells that carries oxygen. The disorder

results in excessive destruction of red

blood cells, which leads to anemia.

Anemia is a disorder in which your body

doesn’t have enough normal, healthy red

blood cells. This disease is inherited,

meaning that at least one of your parents

must be a carrier of the disease. It is

caused by either a genetic mutation, or a

deletion of certain key genes.

******In the beginning part of this year our State President Joseph Rondinelli wanted the Grand Lodge to hire

a public relations firm to publicize the Grand Lodge events. The first thing they said is they will not do this unless the name of the Order is changed to include women.

The state president asked me to research a name that is not being used by any other organization. The name change that is being proposed is "The Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America."

The name change was approved by the Grand Council on April 25th in New York City. The state delegates at this year's state convention will vote on this name change.

Then it will be voted on at the National Convention in Florida in August.

The Garibaldi- Meucci Museum will have its annual luncheon on Saturday, November 7th. The honorees are State Immediate Past President Joseph Rondinelli, Past Museum Chairperson Luigi Squillante,

Staten Island Chamber of Commerce Chairperson Anna Maria Gentile, and New York State Board of Regent Christine Cea. There will also be a bus available to go to the function from the Brumidi Lodge. More information will

follow. Hopefully many members of our lodge will attend this very enjoyable museum function.

In last August’s newsletter, I told you Italy’s First Female Astronaut, Samantha Cristoforetti was set to fly to the

Space Station aboard a Russian Capsule. She arrived in November. The Space Station was getting a specially

designed Espresso Machine from Italy because many Astronauts had complained about the coffee. The latest

update in the news tells us the SpaceX was delayed a day after fast approaching storm clouds prevented the

unmanned rocket from blasting off. The SpaceX supply ship holds more than 4000 pounds of food and equipment.

The Supply Ship is on its way. GODERE!!!

Click on this link to read a very interesting story about early women artists written by Jane Fortune. During the Baroque period, the Grand Duchy of Florence fostered an extremely liberal environment

that nurtured the production of art by women. Giovanna Fratellini, Violante Siries Cerroti and Maria Hadfield Cosway –

Giovanna Fratellini, (1666-1731) was a Florentine artist during the Baroque period.

Born in Florence as Giovanna Marrmocchini Cortesi, she married Guiliano Fratellini in 1685 and changed her name to Fratellini.

She was best known for her pastels in Villa Petraia, a Medici villa on the outskirts of Florence that became residence to the King of Italy during the time

when Florence served as Italian capital in the 1870’s.

Violante Beatrice Siries (1709–1783) BORN and studied under Hyacinthe Rigaue

and Francois Boucher in Paris.

She returned to Florence she married M. Cerrotti and continued

her artistic studies under Conti.

Violante was talented in many genres, but was best known as a portraitist.

Maria Luisa Caterina Cecilia Hadfield, (1759 or 1760-1838) born in Florence to English parents she was one

of eight children. Four of her siblings were killed by their insane nursemaid. She was known for her

portrait miniatures. Married to Richard Cosway,

the couple eventually moved to London, and their home was THE PLACE, to be seen.

The Birthday flower for the Month of May is Lily of the Valley.

This low growing perennial plant has small fragrant bell-shaped white flowers

(though I have seen other variations) and two large narrow long leaves.

They spread, and are best planted in a wooded area, not a garden where you want controlled growth.

FUTURE FOOD DISTRICT

EXPO MILANO 2015

Open every day 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. May 1 to October 31, 2015

http://www.expo2015.org/en/future-food-district

Here is an example of what you will read on website:

Future Food District (#FFD) presents possible scenarios for the application of new technologies

at each step of the food chain. Future Food District is a micro universe that explores new ways for people and food to interact.

Here, you can try a unique and interactive supermarket experience.. sounds interesting. In the past, the market was a place where one exchanged goods was where relationships were formed.

The production and distribution chain was clearer and consumers knew more about the food they were eating. Through new technologies we become connected once again to the real world, eliminating barriers

between consumers and producers in order to have a more direct relationship with food.

Dr. Maria Montessori

Educator & Physician

Born in Chiaravalle, Marche, Italy August 31, 1870 – May 6, 1952

Attended University of Rome La Sapienza Medical School

Maria Montessori is best known for her innovative method of educating children from birth to adolescence.

Her philosophy is still in use today in a large number of public and private schools throughout the world.

She was the first woman to graduate from University of Rome La Sapienza Medical School and became

Italy’s first female doctor. She became intrigued with educating children with special needs in Rome.

In 1896, the Italian Minister of Education was so impressed that he appointed her

director of Scoula Magistrale Ortofrenica, ”medico-pedagogical institute,”

an institution dedicated to the care and education of the mentally challenged.

In 1906 Montessori was invited to oversee the care and education of a group of children of working parents in a new

apartment building for low-income families in the San Lorenzo district in Rome. Montessori was interested in applying her

work and methods to mentally normal children, and she accepted. Casa del Bambini, Children ’s House (home), was opened.

In the Casa del Bambini, children were taught to learn, to develop skills, at their own pace,

called “ spontaneous self development.” At first the children were taught personal care, and care of their surroundings,

such as dusting, sweeping, caring for a garden. Montessori implemented ideas, such as using child size tables and chairs.

She expanded the practical activities, and included gymnastics, clay modeling, songs, with rest periods.

She felt that by working independently, with some guidance by the teachers children could reach new levels,

and become self- motivated to reach more levels of understanding.

She continued to adapt and refine the materials she had developed earlier.

In 1934, dissatisfied with fascism, she moved to Spain. When the Spanish Civil war broke out in 1936, she

moved to the Netherlands. In 1939 she was invited to India by the Theosophical Society of India and

along with her son, Mario Montessori, spent 10 years laying the courses for a strong Montessori Movement.

In 1949 she returned to the Netherlands, where she lived until her death in 1952.

Yogi was voted the league’s Most Valuable Player in 1951, 1954 and 1955. He was Inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972.

Yogi is known for some witty sayings like, “I think Little League is wonderful. It keeps the kids out of the house.”

“When you come to a fork in the road, take it!” Perhaps his most notable and one I find myself using, “It’s like déjà vu all over again.”
