Research Methodology

• On November 22nd, 2007 invitations to participate in the Lunenburg Yacht Club membership survey were sent to 227 club members.

• A total of 158 surveys were completed.

Summary Of Research Findings• Vast majority (92%) of respondents rated LYC’s services and programs in 2007

as being either ‘better than’ (47%) or ‘about the same’ (45%) as previous years.• The majority of the LYC offerings scored above 8 out of 10 in overall

satisfaction.• In terms of satisfaction levels with specific programs and services, members are

the least satisfied with special events (BBQs / themed events), moorings and the Keelboat racing program. ( However these scored above 7 out of 10 ).

• Approximately one-third of respondents are very supportive of LYC acquiring additional property as part of the expansion of LYC.

• A little more than one-third of respondents are very supportive of LYC acquiring the Tanner property.

• Vast majority of respondents are very likely to continue their membership with LYC though the next three years.

• Respondents who rated their overall level of satisfaction with BBQs and themed events as 7 or less were asked to provide a reason for their evaluation (n = 40).

• 20% of those who provided a rating of 7.8 or less mentioned the poor quality food during theme nights and 18% mentioned that prices for the same products vary from event to event / too expensive.

• Respondents who rated their overall level of satisfaction with moorings as 7 or less were asked to provide a reason for their evaluation (n = 26).

• 27% of those who provided a rating of 7.6 or less said that moorings are too close and are possibly damaging yachts and 23% said that moorings are disorganized and mismanaged.

• Respondents who rated their overall level of satisfaction with the Keelboat Racing Program as 7.3 or less were asked to provide a reason for their evaluation.

• 29% of those mentioned that the program needs more boats / more members participating and 24% said that the handicapping system is unfair / it favours faster boats.

• Respondents were asked if there are any specific services or programs LYC should provide that they are not currently providing.

• Almost three-quarters of respondents said either ‘no’ (35%) or ‘don’t know’ (36%).

• Five respondents mentioned the need for adult learn to sail programs:– “Some sort of adult intro-to-sailing program should be reinstituted, advertised

and supported. It is vital for introducing new boaters to the club.”– “Adult learn to sail program – specifically aimed at women.”

• Five respondents mentioned the need for more available dockage:– “To attract new members, there should be made available more dockage.”– “Provide more space for visiting boats.”

• Four respondents mentioned the need for winter boat storage– “Winter boat storage for dinghy's at a reasonable cost.”

To what extent do you support acquiring additional property as part

of the expansion of LYC?Using a 10-point scale where 1 is ‘Do Not Support At All’ and 10 is ‘Completely Support’, members were asked to rate

the extent to which they support acquiring additional property as part of

the expansion of LYC.

The average rating was 7.0.

Almost one-third of respondents provided a rating between 1 and 6 –

indicating a lack of support among some members. However, 30% are very

supportive of LYC acquiring additional property. It is also important to point out

that 16% said ‘don’t know’.

Assuming that a business case is developed for the purchase of the

Tanner property, to what extent do you support LYC acquiring this

property?Using the same 10-point scale, members were asked to rate the extent to which they support LYC purchasing

the Tanner property.

The average rating was 7.2.

Almost one-third of respondents provided a rating between 1 and 6 – indicating a lack of support among some members. However, 36% are very supportive of LYC acquiring the

Tanner property.

The majority of respondents (72%) would like to see LYC

host ‘more’ (43%) or ‘about the same number’ (29%) of Junior

(dinghy) Regattas (National, Regional and Local) over the

next five years.

A small number (2%) would like to see LYC host ‘less’.

About one-quarter said ‘don’t know’.

EXPANSION AND DEVLOPMENT - Services &

Programs

Respondents were asked to indicate whether or not they would

like to see LYC expand and develop various programs and services over

the next five years.

The majority of respondents would like to see LYC expand and develop

its: i) parking area, ii) boating facilities, iii) senior sail training

programs and iv) junior sail training programs.

CONTINUING MEMBERSHIP For Next Three Years

Using the same 10-point scale, members were asked to indicate

how likely they are to continue their membership with LYC for the

next three years.

The average rating was 9.2.

The majority of respondents (80%) provided a rating of 9 or 10 – indicating that most of the

members surveyed are very likely to continue their

membership for the next three years.
