Enhance nurses’ abilities in critical thinking and decisions making so as to achieve best outcome for sick children and their families. COURSE INFORMATION

Aims of the course

1. Improve the competency of registered nurses by acquiring specialized knowledge and skills in “Paediatric Intensive Care Nursing” so that they can deliver a higher standard of care to critically-ill children.

2. Increase nurses’ awareness on integration of theory and evidence-based findings into paediatric critical care nursing practices through interactive learning in clinical setting.

3. Enhance nurses’ abilities in critical thinking and decisions making so as to achieve best outcome for sick children and their families.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to:1. Master the fundamental knowledge and skills on child development, normal and altered

anatomy and physiology, as well as the clinical manifestation and management of medical and surgical conditions in children.

2. Demonstrate skills to perform advanced nursing assessment and understand the impact of multisystem disorders on the physiological condition and psychosocial aspect of the critically ill child and his or her family.

3. Formulate and implement individualized care plan according to nursing assessment, diagnostic findings, laboratory and monitoring results in order to address different medical or surgical conditions.

4. Evaluate the effects of therapeutic interventions and communicate effectively with multidisciplinary team to make necessary recommendations in promoting optimal patient outcomes.

5. Utilize evidence-based knowledge and practice in advanced life saving and life supporting modalities to improve patient outcomes.

6. Anticipate and work as a team in emergency clinical situations within the legitimate framework.

7. Manage to achieve quality outcomes in the delivery of health care for individuals and families.

8. Integrate the philosophy of family centered care in building therapeutic and care relationship with parents and family, and enabling them to make informed decision for the best interest of the child.

9. Respect different cultural aspects in provision of palliative care to terminally ill child and support the bereaved family through a holistic approach.

10. Identify ethical and legal issues, as well as apply principles in ethical and legal decision making in nursing practice.

11. Conduct clinical project and adopt scientific evidences to facilitate quality improvement in patient care.

Duration of the Course

26 October 2017 – 27 June 2018

Design of the course

A. Theoretical Input: a total of 16 days, one study day per week (9:00 am – 5:30 pm)

Module I: The Core Module of PRCC in Paediatric Specialty Nursing (4 study days and 1 hour quiz)

Entry Requir e ment - Nurses registered with the Hong Kong Nursing Council, with valid practicing

certificate.- Preferably, course participants should have at least 24 months post-registration

experience and working in related departments - Priority will be given to nurses currently working in Paediatric Intensive Care Units- Lower priority will be given to nurses who have enrolled in previous PRCC without

successful completion

Exit Requirement:- Successful completion of “Paediatric Advanced Life Support Program, American

Academy of Pediatrics and American Heart Association”

- Successful completion of the following e-learning programs from HA e-Learning Centre (eLc) is required:
