PIRATES, A TIGERS’ JANUARY HABIT • When the Conference USA schedule comes out

every fall, one can almost bet that Memphis and East Carolina will play in the month of January.

• In seven of the last eight seasons (includes 2012-13), Memphis and East Carolina have met in the month of January.

• Of the last 11 meetings (since 2005-06), seven have come in the month of January.

Over the next seven minutes, No. 17/18 Memphis put together an 18-4 spurt to take a 47-32 lead with just over 11 minutes to play. Doneal Mack,makinghisfirstcollegiatestart,netted eight points in the run. The closest the Pirates could get the rest of the way was 12 points. The 61 points were the Tigers’ lowest offensive output in C-USA action that season.

close throughout, and Memphis only led 61-59 with 5:16 left. A Shawne Williams trey and a Darius Washington Jr. floater extended thelead back to five at 66-61 at the 2:35mark.With the game still in the balance, Washington made the key play with 1:20 left. After a missed trey, the ball bounced back to the three-point line, where Washington dove on it and called timeout that allowed Memphis to retain pos-session. MEMPHIS RECEIVES NCAA PUBLICRECOGNITION AWARD FOR THIRD YEAR • For the third-straight year, the Memphis men’s

basketball team received an NCAA Public Rec-ognition Award, given to teams with APRs in the top-10 percent of their respective sports.

• Memphis was one of 13 schools in the nation to receive an NCAA Public Recognition Award and also participate in the 2012 NCAA Tourna-ment.

• Memphis also was the only men’s basketball program in Conference USA to earn an NCAA Public Recognition Award.

• The NCAA Public Recognition Awards are based on the sports’ most-recent multi-year Ac-ademic Progress Rate (APR). This year, the top performing APR scores ranged from 978 to a perfect 1,000. The most-recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 academic years.

• A Kingwood, Texas, na-tive, Pastner was hired as the University of Mem-phis’ 17th head coach on Apr. 7, 2009.

• Last year, Pastner guided Memphis to a 26-9 overall record and a 13-3 Conference USA mark. The Tigers swept the C-USA regular season and tournament titles and earned an NCAA Tournament berth.
